MACS = work

PC = work and/or play.

Mac users got consoles :teeth:

I'm running a Shuttle barebone PC with Northwood P4-2.4gb, 1GB-DDR333, GeForce5900XT-128DDR with a Sony DVD-RW and using X2 Maxtor-80GB HDDs. My gaming mouse of choice is the Microsoft Optical Explorer 3.0 (Because I can't afford a Boomslang Razer). Its not new, but it still runs the heaviest games easily.

That red thing behind the intuos pen is the graphics card....GeForceFX 5900XT. Damn good card at a damn low cost (like $20 more than a 9600pro but performs closer to a 9800 in terms of pushing polygons but loses out on the superb FSAA of Radeon cards.)

I just swapped the CDRW for a DVDRW so its all cool! And the cover is off for obvious reasons....because I tear apart my system often and I can't be bothered to close it back up. And back home in Singapore its really warm so I need the covers off for better airflow. The newer shuttles though have much better airflow and fan systems.

Gonna try out the Boomslang Razor when I get home to SG and see if its worth the money.

Yay for this thread! I don't really have a lot of pictures of the stuff, and since I've moved and I've been fixing up the new house, quite a bit of it is in storage, but I've got a lot of gaming equipment and games! I'm kind of a collector of these things and I'm definitely an enthusiast, coding my own games (nothing of note) and generally being a nerd:

PC:
Alienware Aurora
Althon64 FX-55
1GB Corsair XMS Dual Channel RAM
GeForceFX 6950 256MB

PC2 (guests/girlfriend):
homebuilt
P4 1.8Ghz
1GB RAMBUS 800Mhz RDRAM
Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB

Entertainment center:
52" Mitsubishi DLP HDTV
Xbox
Gamecube
PS2
all wireless controllers and even a DDR pad, rofl.

In *TIGHT* storage:
PS1
SNES
NES - about 60 games
Commodore64 - about 200 games (no telling how many still work)
Atari 2600 - about 50 games

Handhelds:
GBA SP
Gameboy - original black and white (about 30 games)

I also have a 900Mhz box set up solely as a MAME emulator with about 1000 games.

(told you I was a dork)

A Purist, I love it!

BTW, Im jealous about that different metroid cover art..... Makes my obssessed self want to import a copy:) I recently played through and beat the original metroid for the first time on the GBA release. I had to break down and use a map a few times though.

Did you get a chance to play the remake "Zero Mission"? That one was pretty good. Interesting how they incorporated Samus without her suit into the storyline, not just as an added easter egg. Worth a checkout if you havent played it.

The internet has kinda ruined gaming for me, now it's so easy to just look things up. The carrot is gone so to speak.

Back in <1990 you had to try things for yourself. You had to draw maps on checkered paper, it was apart of the gameplay. If you wondered it bending a game rule was possible, you had to try for yourself. Now you can just look it up and the game becomes flat. There's no mysteries.

Also, games today require no effort from the player, and are often overprotective. MZM has an auto map, and the player is just herded around the map. I hated it.

Metroid 1 may have suffered badly from cloned screens / lack of landmarks, but atleast it was an exploration game.

Yeah, I can see if the exploration aspect of the original metroid was the part you loved how an auto map could ruin that experience.

Personally, after playing several of the early D&D PC games, I got a little burnt out on the whole mapmaking aspect of games, and am all to happy to see it go.

With Super Metroid, I loved how there was still the aspect of exploration integrated into the game. While there was an automap, many large sections of the game weren't shown unless your character actually found it (as opposed to downloading the map from a map room) It still kept the whole aspect of "there could be a room right on the other side of this wall" feel, despite the fact that the automap didn't show it.

Metroid Fusion was quite a bit more linear than I ever wanted a metroid game to be. while Super Metroid was still a bit more open, like even though you had a map, you would have to scour it until you found where you were supposed to be, Fusion often times would simply lock you out of whole areas of the map, quite literally giving you only one place to go, and on top of that, telling you that you need to go there. Still didn't keep me from playing through it a good six times so far though ;)

I have still to play "Exile." Ive heard a lot about it, and how it has a similar feel to the old school memorization exploration of the first metroid.

I can definetly see how the advent of internet guides makes it all too easy to get unstuck in a game. It always feels cheap to go online and read what you have to do to get past a particular area. Completely takes away that reward of having figured it out for yourself.

Yo Prom, did you ever play Goonies 2 for NES? Thinking back, that was one of my favorite games for NES, and it could be likened to metroid i think in terms of exploration. I don't believe there was a map, but you would essentially gain items that would allow you to reach previously unreachable areas. Man, just thinking about it makes me want to play through it again. This was probably one of the best movie liscensed games out there, in terms of what it did with and when it came out. Willow was another surprisingly awesome movie liscensed game. A similar feel to zelda, but a bit more linear. (but some decent art for the system, and I remember the music being really sweet). They had an interesting experience system where you would gain levels, but it's reflection in game was that your character swung his sword faster. So at first, hes almost heaving the thing at enemies, but a few levels down the road, and his animation attack flies. Simple I know, but one of the first games I can remember that really integrated gaming mechanics from different genres well. If you havent played Willow or Goonies 2, I would definetly recommend them. I don't think they would be all that expensive (probably even cheap)

Man, my imagination is so sparked right now, I think im gonna have to pull the NES out of storage in the next few days. Fuck polygons.

I used to play goonies, but I have no memories of the game, other than I enjoyed it. I think there's was a yo-yo and doors to a parallell world.

I had a friend who played willow, but he said it was a bit crzy on leveling so I didn't check it out.

Exile was a great game, but it was so hard that they offered a diploma to the first person to complete it. It was enjoyable regardless how far you got though, cuz it was about exploration, not killing the bad guy.

It got a really steep learning curve. You need a manual/walkthrough for the controls. What's so great about it is that is just places you in a world, and that's it. You're allowed to screw up too, like discarding a key item essential to the game!

If you're offended by the gfx there's always the amiga versions, but I really prefer the C64 version. I think old gfx is a bit like impressionism, it's so fuzzy that it could be anything, and that anyting in my mind is more awesome than polygons could ever be.

BBC Micro (http://exile.acornarcade.com/)
C64 (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=865)
Amiga (http://www.nemmelheim.de/exile/)

Unfortunately it's a bit too hard, and with no landmarks it's easy to get lost a bit into the game. I've been working on my own version here (http://web.telia.com/~u48508900/exile/). It's going to be even more free and it'll also have plenty of landmarks since I plan to hand paint the whole map (no tiles).

Where did you get all the (now painrted) nes cartridges from?

Prometheus, those Exile renderings are looking really sweet! Do you also have any links to some of the Metroid remake art that you have done over the years? I would love to check that out too.

Im definetly gonna download Exile. I was looking through some screenshots, and it looked like a sweet exploration game. I was telling sammy the other day how cool I thought it would be to do a game like this, where you are just a little guy on some alien planet, and you have to survive, but you are the only living thing there. All the game design and areas would be geared around having to deal with natural occurances (earthquakes, lavaflows, blistering heat on the surface, stuff like that). Really push that sense of isolation.

Man, I wonder what that one guys diploma read. "Sir, what was your major?" "Um, I beat Exile" "damn, your hired!"

Thanks for the links dude

I ended up getting most of the cartridges from this wholesale distibutor online, BRE Software. He was a really nice guy. I ended up only paying about $60 for all the carts, and he even paid for the shipping! I kinda lucked out there. 99% Mario/duck Hunt. I told him they don't even have to be in working order. I figured there would be someone out there sitting on a bunch of broken carts not knowing what to do with them, but not wanting to just throw them away.

The Vietnam era death card image that’s on the side of the tower was taken off of the web, blown up, made into a stencil, and instead of spending a lot of money on paint, I used a permanent marker :teeth: Also, notice what's on the monitor :yayca: I got a mirror behind my computer desk perfectly angled so I can watch the TV (in reverse of course) and still work on the computer. The gray thing by the remote is a fan/space heater, so I can keep my area perfectly temperature controlled year around. The desk is an old metal one (50’s – 60’s era) that I got for about $10 and I'd suggest them for anyone who games on the PC. The pull out typewriter shelf is excellent for a mouse area. It’s right next to you in a natural position, so instead of you having to reach up for it, you can sit back and surf the web in a reclined position. The one on the left adds just enough space to take notes/sketch stuff. It’s also very sturdy, or heavy depending on which you prefer. It’s hard to knock things over by just bumping it. I think it was designed to withstand a nuclear blast. It's not the most expensive set up (or cleanest), but it gets the job done.

As for the computer specs. It’s a custom built machine. It’s got…
512 MB Ram
ATI 9600 Pro graphics card
1.46 GHz AMD Athlon processor
111 GB HD space
Sound card sucks, but I’m gonna get a new one and new speakers soon.
Overall, it plays games good enough. It’s not the Millennium Falcon, but it gets me where I wanna go while avoiding those asteroids (lag).

That's what I found enjoyable about Exile, there wasn't actual level design .... it was a mathematical algorythm that generated the entire world + physics.
So it really felt like you were exploring this world governed by some sort of law, but not human design .... really strange stuff, I do however wonder what a modern day (playable) form of Exile would be like.

Hey, nice Zebes site! some cool concept drawings. I dug the Chozo pet, heh.
So you are an Asimov fan eh? I recently read through foundation, fantastic Voyage, and I, Robot for the first time. definetly the best Sci Fi writer I have read so far by a longshot. I would even place I, Robot somewhere in my top 3.

another pretty interesting Sci Fi story that I recently came across was "The Jaunt" by stephen King. Its a short story in the "Skeleton Crew" book. A really easy read. Its a new take on time/distance travel. An interesting enough story, but one of those where your imagination just picks up where the story ends, and you think about it for a few days. If you like Twilight Zone sort of stories, youll love it.

A fellow TOOL fan as well eh? Have you gotten a chance to see them live at all in Sweden? They do really awesome new versions of "Stinkfist" and "Pushit" in concert

that's a very nice set-up, impressive indeed.
this summer i'm thinking about going 64-bit, is there any advantage to it?

Hey MuffinMan...well, I have to be honest. I may not be the best one to ask about that. I've heard the new P4's are really nice. Really, I know just enough to drool when I see a good system, and I can tell you how mine performs and hope it helps!

I have literally had NO problems running anything I can throw at this machine. The processor is working flawlessly and the PCI-express mother board is really living up to the hype. This thing crunches everything and comes back for more! I play some of the newer games (City of Heroes, Half Life 2, etc.) and have had no lag, no ghosting, nada. Full screen video/DVD, etc. Pretty sweet.

So, I don't know if that really answers your question specifically, but hopefully it helped! It seems to me that anything but the latest P4's or a setup like mine would be a waste of time with todays programs and games! ;)

Yeah. Sammy and I were lucky enough to go to school together in savannah that had a killer weekend flea market that we got lots of awesome stuff at (including my powerglove, ps2 REZ for $20, and a top loading NES for $40, among others), and also some old video rental store way in the middle of nowhere that had TONS of genesis, saturn, and SNES games for sale, all $5 each. My collection swelled in college, now it's kinda peetered out, and I just get things as they come out, or any really good finds for older systems that I never knew about

No real advantages or noticable differences in the 64 Bit processors, except you may have trouble running it on anything except the new windows 64 bit edition, and you kind of have to port all your 32 bit software and drivers from what I understand. Only real advantage is like an unlimited amount of virtual memory, and most computers are probably going to be 64 bit here soon.

Pretty good sites. I have not used them yet but I might. Some of the stuff can get expensive especially if the older games are new and have never been unpackaged.

Well none of my laptops are for gaming so I use this (also posted in show your studio thread):

Ok, if you look real closely you will spot the following:
Xbox
PS2
Gamecube(with the adapter to play GB games on it)
Dreamcast(hiddend next to the Gamecube)
21" TV
All routed through the Pioneer Receiver with 5.1 dolby suround. I also have a GB Advance, GB Advance SP and a PSP. But I work so much I rarely get to use them. I have a 2 Playstations in the basement, one modded, one not. Those are hooked up to a 28" TV with the same Pioneer Receiver (yes I have two of the same receivers... on sale at Fred Meyers). Yes, all this in a tiny 8 x10 room.... It gets hot in there.....

Well, got an xbox, ps2 and a G5 20" Imac for games and work. If I had a pc it would be for games only (I hate them otherwise). I like flight sims, which are few and far in between on the mac. But I do have Falcon 4.0 for the mac, which I still consider to be the best flight sim of all time. Graphics are a little dated, but it still looks pretty sweet, and is hyper realistic.
