Hi folks!
There will be a weekly contest soon here in the sketches-forum...
The idea is to turn the high potential of the creature-inspired artworks into a fun weekly contest...
The plan is to open a thread every week where members are allowed to post creatures they drew...after the week is over there will be a poll, where all members of ca.org can vote for their favorite...the winner's creatures will be posted in a separate sticky thread, where all winner creatures can be seen by the drooling members...
For now i am struggling with some organisation probs....for example i didn't find any way to start a poll in a existing thread...there is only the option to start a poll when opening a thread...
However just a note, that you should be prepared when things will start rolling...sharpen your mind and your pencils until then...
Feel free to post crits, comment, suggestions or anything else related to this topic...maybe we can optimize the whole idea before starting...
SUGGEST TOPICS HERE! (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37440)
edit: i forgot to mention that i got inspired for this thing by this thread of johnsaulrubio:

I don't know, actually i wanted to start this with no topics...but i am not against topics...with every cow-contest we'll optimize the rules and structure, so at the end there will be a fine working activity...if there is any interest at all...
So anything can change like e.g. the duration of the contest...maybe one week is too less and we'll make 2 weeks of it later on or maybe one month....i don't know at the moment...i'll watch the progression and change the structure when necessary...
So what do you think about topics? Is it better with or without topics?

I was just thinking for the First. Just to get it started...
Perhaps the best one could be the mascot or the best herd.

Damn, this thread sounds awesome. I say no on the topics, this way we get a wide variety of different creatures. :)

Every time I think that I know this forum, and feel like there's nothing unexpected going to happen - you guys come up with something like that. What can I say - I love you :D all of you :) So much great stuff going on in the last few weeks - makes me wanna leave my job and browse the forum all the time - and be a part of all this great activities.
Hugs :)

BTW - Sounds like there's gonna be at least a couple of threads connected to this contest each week - maybe (if that's not a problem) make it a sub-forum for the finished pieces and voting, discussion and all and put only the winners thread in the general sketches forum as a sticky - this way they won't get lost.

Wicked.
I like topics, it forces you to do things you wouldn't normally do. As long as the topic isn't too constraining the artist still has loads of room for his own interpretation.
Bring it on!

I agree with Floris - having a topic of some sort will help to push people out of their comfort zones, and it might make voting easier if we're comparing creatures based around a similar brief.
If adding a poll to the thread for voting is a problem, why not just have people post their votes in the thread when the contest is done? That way, people have the opportunity to leave a comment to explain why they cast their vote for a particular entry. CGTalk handles voting for their sketch group this way, and it seems to work pretty well.
Nice one, Fozzy! Let's go, go, go..!

My vote is for having topics too.
Why? I just feel that specific subjects will be more challenging and also would be more fun to see how different interpretations and styles are applied plus it will differentiate this thread from the creature thread already here.
A week to two weeks timeframe should be long enough. I think it's good to have a bit of deadline pressure applied as well and then start fresh with a new topic so things don't get too stale! :^^:
Can't wait! COWabunga!

My vote's for topics as well, for reasons already stated by others.
As long as the topic isn't too restricting.

Ok, so there will be topics...the masses cried for it :)
But i am still not sure about the voting...Matt, your idea is not bad, but someone (obviously me :)) have to count alle the votes posted by members...this could be a very painful job...
currently my idea is:
1. open a thread for the creatures-images with images ONLY...no comments or crits here...this thread will be closed after one week...
2. another poll-thread - with the images (from the images-thread) copied into this one - will be opened, and also closed after another week..
members are allowed and actually invited to post here their crits and comments, so people can see for whom they voted and for what reason...
I think it's a pretty slick and organized way to handle the problem, that we can't start a poll in an existing thread...
so there will be 2 threads for every cow-round...the image-posting thread and the final "see-all-entries-vote-and-comment"-thread...
Here is thread for your topic-suggestions:

Are we allowed to post multiple entries, or just one?

Matt Dixon:
I think it'll start in 1-3 days...

good question, i have no clou...again this is a point to discuss...what do you thik, guys and gals? Only one entry or multiple?

I'm in, sounds like too much fun not to be.
I think it would be good to limit it to one entry each. It will be easier to vote that way, and it should, theoretically, mean that we will spend more time and love on that one piece. Quality over quantity.
However, i think it would be good to be allowed to post thumbnails, sketches, blueprints, pieces of snot or whatever it is we use to create that one masterpiece.

hmm, nah i dont really like drawing creatures much...
...
hehe im just joshing you, im so in!! ^-^
try and make the topics very vague and almost random (a bit like metaphysics weekly thing) so we all can go nuts in our own ways ^-^
cant wait, awesome idea fozz

In the true spirit of competition, and to promote the best work possible, I think we should allow only one entry per artist.
If these threads get real popular, which I think they will, there will be a good number of entries even at one per. Having only one entry allowed will also prompt us to decide which of our own ideas is the best to enter, put our best foot forward with a good effort on the first try and have time to develop one drawing to full completion. (I guess you can tell I'm one of those quality, not quantity people! :))

Yeah, I agree. Keep it clean with one per.
Fozzybar
January 24th, 2005, 01:58 PM
Ok, again the masses decided...ONE entry only! :)
Now...seems that everything is prepared to start...just one question is bugging me...i am not sure about the first topic...should it be something special like Joshua suggested (mascot for the cow-activity)?
Or any other ideas for a cool kick-off topic?
btw i am thinking of doing cow-rounds from time to time without any topic so artists can come up with sick creatures, which results of their sick minds....i know we all have some in ourselves...i will call them "freestyle cow"...what do you think about this?
gimme your input...i plan to start this shit in a few days...

hmm dunno about first topic, but i like the 'freestyle-cow' ones, that would be good to have one of those every few rounds.
looking forward to seeing what y'all come up with

Freestyle bouts from time to time is a good idea.
The cow mascot seems like a good place to start to me...

So when's the opening day?
Fozzybar
January 25th, 2005, 02:52 AM
Ok...the kick-off is very very soon...maybe tonight...depends on my time...
Just wanted to add that i am thinking about deleting the first creature-posting threads of every cow-round, so we only will keep the poll-thread, which includes all important things...it's easier for browsing through the single rounds later on when there's only one thread for every round...

There is a new subforum on conceptart.org for activities:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=74
And here's the thread for Round #1 of "COW - Creature of the Week" - the first weekly activity:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37511
The topic is mascot, so the winner creature will be the mascot for this activity...grab your pencils and CREATure...;)
