Hey people of conceptart. This is my first time ever posting work on this forum. A few people have been prepping me up to do it, and I've always wanted to do so. Thought it would be fun.

I was wandering how this guy (from the first pic) can walk? I think it's imposible with his BOOTS.
The creatures are also awesome.

Hahaha! Hey Sedone, thats a cool avatar picture! Yeah man, I hope you post some stuff real soon. You gotta show people some of your new work.

I'm happy you guys like the work. With any characters that I draw on my spare time, I'm going to try and keep it on the level of detail in line and shadow as the girl with the crazy smile, and try to go past that.

Hey Yaseck, yeah man, when I was drawing the first blue character (megaman), I was wondering how he would walk too. In the videogame, they somehow managed to animate him doing that. Heh, I must have exaggerated the boots a little too much.

Iwasink, I'll post a few more things, and AmadorL, the site wasn't working before cause I messed up the link to it the first time but it's fixed now. Click on the "My Website" link, it works.

Wat dee FAK meng!? Your stuff is pretty damn HOT I gotta say. I'm interested in your colouring technique on the mega man pic. I'm going to guess at markers, pencil crayons and some photoshop touches. Anyway, really love the subtle texture going on there. Oh and to hell with walking logistics! This is an impact piece, your entitled to some "stylistic streamlining".
If I had to crit anything it would be the font you used for your name, email etc. Its boring and your name deserves better :D.

Oh, and welcome.

Hey Keenerbean, no, I don't think I've seen Wayshak's art before. Does he have a website? And yeah, that font I used for megaman is pretty crappy. It was one of those things were I wanted to do more with the type, get a better font or something, but I never got around to it. But I'll be changing it very soon now. Oh yeah, ChadTHX is right I used photoshop to color Megaman. All the darker shaded tones I shaded with regular pencil then I colorized those areas in photoshop so it looked a little like color pencil.

Hey Sean, waddup! Yeah man, finally posted some work, took me a while, I just had to find the time.

Fozzybar, I'm glad you like my style man. I'm gonna try to post some new stuff here soon.

Hey mr. Magnetic head, Tankor would be an interesting character to design, I forgot all about him, probably one of the best designed character in Beast Machines to me. Most of the other designs were kinda weak compared to the designs in Beast Wars. Maybe I will draw him for fun on my spare time one of these days. I do want to do another tranformer picture.

Yeah you guys, I'm gonna try to post some more stuff here. By the way, at ADVfilms I work with a pretty talented team. There's Chad Townsend who you all know as (ChadTHX), Ted Galaday which I think he's posted at Concept Art before, and Sedone who I think is quite known to this forum already. Just wanted to let everyone know that we all have new artwork we may want to show on Concept Art so keep your eyes peeled for these guys just in case they decide post. Hey Jason Manley, whats up. Heh heh, Tetsuo :p Yeah, color is what I'm currently re-analyzing much further than I've done before to put myself on the level I should be on. I should have better colored stuff, both painted and graphically stylized, posted sooner or later. Keep a look out for it.

Chris

Oh yeah, by the way, I had forgotten what the definition of what the term "Kung Fu" really meant. Me and my friends last year when I first found out were suprised it meant what you wrote above this post. Before then I always thought it meant a better fighting style than Karate. I learned a lot of stuff after reading some of Bruce Lee's books.

Jeff the Green Hornet,

Hey dude, thanks for the compliments, I'm glad you like my progress. Since I've been at ADVfilms I've been learning some crisp pen and ink techniques from ChadTHX to give my mech designs a more finished and precise look. All the tips I've learned from him have worked well, now I just have to get a little faster from idea, to rough sketch, to finished work. Sometimes I find myself thinking a little too much about different ideas for designs, and sometimes I spend too much time with little finished details that don't need to be there. But in the end, art in itself is a fun battle. By the way, I'm glad Josh was able to get your pictures up on this site for you. I hope you create your website soon.

Jaymz Z,

Man, I haven't heard from you in a while, whats up dude! I'm glad you and Jason recommended I join this forum last summer. Sorry I took so long to post. You were right though about this site, it's a great place for artists to get together on the net, talk art stuff and show work. Yeah, my new job is fun, I'm no longer sitting at home picking my toe jam anymore. Glad to here from you dude.

Yeah Chad,

With all the hacky sack playin, soon we'll all be shooting fire balls-HADUUUKAN!- and Tiger upper cuts just to show off our fighting styles!

Hey KayCustomz,

Yeah, I based that version of Megaman on a combination of the old megaman games from Nes, and the new megamanx look. I always liked the way his look was in Megaman2, 3, and 4 on the Nes more than I like the new X look so I tried mostly to stay true to that version, with a few added design ideas. He wasn't as wimpy looking then. If your referring to the robot, Skywarp, I colored that in photoshop using the jagged edged lasso tool to get the shapes I wanted. I'm glad you like the art.

These ARE very cool.^^ (Did your classmates know you were drawing them...?=p)

Chris J. Anderson!
March 10th, 2003, 08:11 PM
Hey Killing.people,

When people don't know what to classify some of my work as, and it looks similar to something like anime, then people will call it anime. I used to get irritated a long time ago when people called it that, but now I know that when people need to identify your work, or anything at all as something, they will call it what they see fit. So I don't get offended. I think my more anime looking work is more like hyper anime because it is anime-like in it's cartoony charm, but has realism that real anime doesn't have, like characters that have nostrils, and real lips and things like that. I'm influenced by anime as well as good american comic art, and old painters like Singer Sargent, and mech designers like Sid Mead and real life. I like my work to look exciting, realistic, yet still stylized in a cool way that looks interesting to the eye. However, I have been involved with doing work like that for too long, so I am currently going back to doing absolute realism, working on more realistic art peices in my spare time to just go all out and see what I am made of now, and then go back to stylized work. I will post some of that new stuff sooner or later. At any rate, I'm glad you like my work.

Defcombeta,

Yeah man, even though I enjoy being a concept artist, I still can't get enough life drawing and painting. Most of those drawings I've posted are two years old, and some on my site are two months old. I can't get enough of drawing real life people, portraits, and painting people-even though I haven't painted anyone in a while. I feel better drawing and painting people from life every once in a while, it's like recalobrating your fundamental abilities to remind yourself about the art of reality. and even learning some new things about how light and shape, and line work in real life, and even reminding yourself about things you may have forgotten.

R_M

Haha, so you like super girl the best? Thats a girl named Carry I new in college. She was real cute, and she actually wanted me to draw her one day on a weekend as supergirl.

Moro,

My classmates didn't know I was drawing them, when the girl found out though, she wasn't too happy.

I might be wrong, in which case ya'll can collectively kick my bum, but the third step on the crate texture looks like a (really clever) use of a stock photoshop filter. Why don't i think of stuff like that? Oh wait, you don't need to answer that.
Still, i like the distinctive style these drawings have. And the freaky smile… I think that if you look up "freaky smile" in a dictionary, that picture is next to the definition. The humor these images convey makes me sorry that disney hasn't hired you; if you're still on these forums and read this, call them, pleeeeeease.

One constructive crit though, in the realistic life drawing, the faces have a somewhat cartoonish quality. What is it that newbs always have to criticise professional work?

Wow I was suprised to see this thread show up again. Thanks for the bump Josh.

Jeff Hoffman! aka (Stitchface) - It's been a long time dude, hows it going? I see you got a new website started, i can't wait to see the rest of your work on it. Yeah, when we both worked at Dreamforge, those were some cool times. We made a great team. I learned a shite load from you about creature design and a few drawing techniques to get unique skin folds, etc. I never forget to add contrast to important areas of work, I rememebr you showed me the trick of using good contrast. Thats cool you still have my work we traded. I was just showing my girlfriend two of the pictures you did that I have. Your marker technique still rocks. Thanks for the congrats, and nice to hear fomr you again!

Ancient Kitten & Josh - Your both right about the texture picture. There was more than three steps, I painted the hell outta that with the mouse, and at the end I did indeed use a photoshop filter, 'plastic wrap' (with some variations of me painting extra stuff to add to the wrap) to give it a quick slimey look. I was taught to do that on some textures that needed to look a certain way in the game engine. Yeah, I cheaped out with a photoshop filter back then, it was the very first time I ever touched digital paint and I learned a lot of quick tricks. But I never wanted to get stuck cheaping out with PS tricks, especially after seeing Craig Mullins art work and other professional digital painters around his age, I realized that you can actually use Photoshop to paint realistically in. After seeing his work, and ESPECIALLY after using the WACOM TABLET!! I learned I can paint easier in Photoshop the way I use oils to paint. Without the wacom tablet, and a fast computer, the world is a terrible place, and your hand and wrist feels the pain.

Ancient Kitten - About the faces in the life drawings being a tad cartoony: I did those in my last semester at college and by then started to add more exaggeration to life drawings. I was trying to find a way to add more life and style without loosing the realism. But I want to make sure people know I can draw realism well so I'm currently drawing a series of my girlfriend, her face, her in an illustrated pose, and some new oil paintings. I plan to show that stuff sometime in the summer.

McNallyism - Ah, I'm not totally done with my new stuff yet. I just finished an illustration and now I gotta finish a few more things. I should be ready by Feb 15th, hopefully. :evilbat:

Grooveholmes - I did those life drawings in College at CCAD.

DNA - Thanks

Cloak - Glad you like the Megaman. I want to do a new one but more refined.

endregan - Yeah, keeps the fightin, kickin, martial arts skills up

Well, i thought those life studies were meant to be new ones... my bad.

[pretentious rant]
I think that if you know why and where to apply a filter, and know what it does, then it isn't cheap but a welcome way to speed up workflow, especially when quantity matters. Most gamers won't notice a photoshop filter, let alone one that has been put in for a purpose (other than looking flashy). Although it's certainly better to stay away from it.
But then, many of photoshops effects, like the dodge/burn utility, can be considered effect filters. It's all a matter of definition i suppose.
[/pretentious rant]

Can't wait to see some new stuff! Especially the Mega Man :)

Chris J. Anderson!
January 12th, 2004, 01:26 PM
Ancient Kitten - I agree completely. Ah, you got me remembering more about this now. About lense flares and other photoshop fliters, I find it very rewarding to paint in effects and anything else by hand without using the actual filters. Like for example someone might consider using dodge and burn to create the sun in a backround. But if a person studies why the sun looks like it does, and what exactly causes it to shine so bright, and learn what colors next to others colors causes it's effects to happen, you can make it look and feel very real. At the same time, you can apply all that you learned about color with that, to other things and try painting other color variations together to paint better in general. Seems to me that relying on filters can make an artist lazy, and after a while, they forget how color really works and why it works and in the end, forget some valuable painting methods. Unless you have to do something quick for you company. Every artist has to cheap it out for company/business sake once in a great while, like you said, to speed up work flow. I'm glad I even have the opportunity to use photoshop/wacom and a proficient machine to even talk about this.

John
January 12th, 2004, 02:13 PM
But if a person studies why the sun looks like it does, and what exactly causes it to shine so bright, and learn what colors next to others colors causes it's effects to happen, you can make it look and feel very real.

So… someone feels like writing a tutorial, huh? :)
Just kidding, you take your time and produce pictures that make me get off my lazy bum and work, and maybe in a couple of years, i can figure out all that stuff. I know it's a learning by doing thing, so i have to put some time and energy in. I only started taking art any more serious than doodles a couple of months ago, but i already feel rewarded for every second i put into it.
I just hope i can get good enough so i don't have to be the one using flares and that terrible 'curling page' effect i see in computer ads to earn my bread.
And thanks for your kind answers.
