just play around with it, it's like your painting in real life. the brushes are so customizable, no other program lets you adjust brush size, density, softness, hardness, strokes, dampness, etc. as much as painter lets you. carefully adjust your brushes, alot of the brushes may seem useless, but really they all have great uses. i still use painter 7, yeah, i'm kinda outdated. but really i'm fine with it. i don't use painter much cuase it is so harsh on my processor and ram. especially with high res images, try painting an entire image with a big brush make a ton of strokes and they lag 5 seconds late. its my athlonXP +2500 1.8ghz proc. later i'm going 64 bit. painter is an extremely powerful digital painting program, use it well. :yayca:

There are brush settings by the brush tabs (top right). Make sure you set up your brush tracking too (edit, prefrences, brush tracking...).

What you haven't figured out yet is how to read the furnished materials (also known as RTFM).

You have a built in Help file, to teach you everything from how to adjust your brushes to how to use special effects. If you take a few minutes to simply explore your CD, you'll may even find some included Painter tutorials...

That's not to mention the loads of Painter tutorials you will find if you ever bother to go to a search engine, like Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, Dogpile, Mamma, or a half dozen others, and enter the simple search keywords of "Corel Painter tutorials" (without the quotation marks)...

You need to figure out how to use the tools at your fingertips, instead of just expecting the world to spoon feed you everything.

Digital Painting & Character Design by Don Seegmiller. It's the nuts.

Oh, and Warhead, one tool you're looking for if you're thinking in terms of actual brushes and 'softer' is the 'resat' setting. Play with that, it determines how much paint you pick up and how much you lay down. If you mean the edges, you need to go into the brush settings and play with the brush shape.

As for Madster, my aren't you the hero.

Um, I haven't heard of the other book. I only borrowed Don's book, and to be fair, a large part of it is on the process of character design. Like, fully the first half. It's not a manual, it's just the way he uses it to get the job done. But I picked up three or four tricks from it which I use time and time again. I guess that with this whole game, your best bet is to take inspiration from as many sources as possible. If you see both books, take a look at each. For me, Don's book was invaluable, and I've always meant to go and buy it, cause I'm sure there's more in there for me to pick up.
