Greetings all!

I live in FL and am considering attending Ringling. My interests are in, you guessed it, concept work. I have an internal debate of which someone might have an informed opinion. First, If I attend Ringling would the highly rated computer animation program be a better choice over the Illustration major? I have attended some FEWS sessions and enjoyed the company of mostly illustration majors. The impression I've gotten is the Ill. program caters more to book, editorial, illustration etc...

The other option I am considering is a Fine Arts program in painting and drawing. I could attend in Tampa for considerable less $$$$.

Any thoughts are appreciated :)

By the way, this site ROCKS!!!

Thanks,

Smith

It depends on how god your drawing skill are now. I majored in Computer animation at ringling. I had no intrest animating modeling or texturing, but I did know that I wanted to work with 3d artists. If your drawing skill are not developed enough that ca isnt going to help, you need an illustration background to catch up to speed. by forcing myself to animate model and texture I learned what kind of drawings translated best into the 3d world of form and movement, majoring in Computer animation gave me a real edge agianst my competition. learning maya dosent hurt either. I did have to endure alot of classes like unix scripting that didnt do much for me but thats hard to avoid. since all my teachers were busy groming my animation and 3d skills. I was left alone to mature my concept drawings. when I graduated almost every 2d artwork in my portfolio was done outside of class. If you want to be a concept guy and major in C.A. you have to be really selfmotivated to produce all you concept work on your own, while using the 3d knowledge to further develop your concepts. and as far as networking goes, your chances of meeting more people in your field is greater if you hang around C.A. people. the illustration class dosent have such a hot job placment record. but regardless of what you major in you need to draw draw draw. the industry is more competative than ever right now, I dont know what it will be like once you graduate, if you really want to be a concept artist you are going to have to work even harder than you ever have before.

by the way why did you post this question in the figure drawing section:mad:

this is an art school and education question?
not a figure drawing.

Thank you for the reply Android. Sounds like Ringlings CA dept. would be a better route than the Fine Arts in Tampa.
By the way, your reputation at FEWS is a bit legendary. The guy who turned me on to this site told me of your hard work and influence(Kaplow etc...)

Sorry about the wrong post:(

G'day!
