I finally got a bunch of the sketches I did in San Francisco scanned, so I thought I'd start a sketchbook to post them. Hopefully it will keep me motivated to keep on drawing as well. Plus, all the cool kids are doing it.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Hogthing.jpg
I drew this one on the plane. I don't know what it is, but it looks like an illustration out of a prehistoric Charlotte's Web.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/SkunkApe.jpg
The roomies and I had a mini-Thunderdome in our room the first night. The topic was The Elusive North-Floridian Skunk Ape. I think ChromaticCodex won, for the sole fact that his had a magic wand.
Wow, I can't believe I drew his hand on backwards. That's downright embarassing.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/RoboBuddha.jpg
We then headed over to the Galleria where we had a few more Thunderdomes. The first was Robot Buddha. Mine was an Enlightenment vending machine.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/ZombieJesus.jpg
And then we did Zombie Jesus. I drew him cartoony because it's less blasphemous that way. I think I read that somewhere. Probably the Bible.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/GuyInATree.jpg
It's a guy in a tree. I'm not too happy with it, but my goal was to draw something that took up the entire page, and I did just that.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Rapist.jpg
I drew the head of this guy and was planning on giving him long flowing regal robes, but then I realised how incredibly cliche he was going to look so I just went in the completely opposite direction and gave him this bent over naked body with screwed up anatomy. Much creepier, if you ask me.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/SpeakingInTongues.jpg
I mostly just love trying to imagine how this guy would sound when he talks.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/FabulouslyGaySanta.jpg
Another Thunderdome we did. The topic for this one was Fabulously Gay Santa. The tall handsome lad is Mrs. Claus.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Cyclops.jpg
Canadian cyclops, perhaps?
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/PacMan.jpg
Hehehe. This was originally a drawing of Pac-Man but apparently somebody got a hold of my sketchbook and added the -LEY. I think they're trying to imply Jason Manley has a big smile or something.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/TritonChair.jpg
A creature that I just realised must have been subconsciously inspired by the chairs (http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/CA08.jpg) in the Triton lobby.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/MachineGunEyes.jpg
Drawn just minutes before the infamous Insect Battle extravaganza started.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Angel.jpg
This is a sketch for my Angel Thunderdome entry. Unfortunately that's as far as it got.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Guy.jpg
This is a life drawing of three or four people in one done on the last night there.
New sketches coming soon! Hopefully!

Here are a couple things I've done since I got back.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Golem.jpg
I did this right after I got home to try out a few of the many things I picked up at the workshop. I need some practice with many of the techniques, but can definitely see them helping. I also used shapes and value to block it in rather than lines, which is something I need to do more often.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/TestTube.jpg
I sketched this while watching some Anchorman special features. I touched it up in Photoshop, mainly due to my scanner having a personal vendetta against pencils.

http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Eye.jpg
Just some more practice painting. I like eyes. This was done from reference.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Thumbnails.jpg
Just some creature thumbnails. I haven't modelled anything in a while and I'm trying to come up with a creature to model and texture for my portfolio. Nothing here really jumps out at me, but I'm getting some vague ideas of the direction I want to go.

Maybe I should tell people I hate drawing. That would get me some replies.
Here are a few very quick digital sketches.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/CreatureSketch2.jpg
I liked one of those thumbnails after all. I'm going to do some more sketches of variations this guy and if I come up with something I like I'll model him in Maya.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/TreeGuy.jpg
Here was another idea I had for a creature to model. It got a little cliche for my tastes so I dropped the idea. I might revisit it if I can come up with an original angle.

I don't know where this came from. I just started making shapes and doodling and then before I knew it this guy was sitting in front of me. Literally. I asked him to move out of the way so I could see the screen and he went and sat on my bed. I shyly asked if I could draw him. After I finished this picture, we made out for like half an hour. He tasted like fresh raspberries.
Dear Diary, I think I'm in love.

Dude, how did you make out with it if it has no mouth?? :O
Hehe, seriously though, some cool stuff here. What's all this talk of modelling? Do you normally do a lot of 3d stuff? Post some up, yo!
Watch your proportions...in that last one, his near arm looks longer than his far one, and his far leg looks longer and thinner than his near one.
Keep on truckin'!
0kelvin
January 21st, 2005, 02:16 AM
I haven't done much modelling in a while. Gotta get back into it. You can see a bunch of my 3D stuff on my website. Here (http://www.whereismyeyeball.com) in case you're too lazy to scroll all the way down to my sig. Texturing is mainly where I want to focus, but if I'm gonna texture something I might as well model it as well. Diversify!
Yeah, you're right about the proportions. Although his far leg only looks longer because he's dragging his foot. I think it might actually be shorter. You can't really tell because it gets lost in the shadow, though.
He does have a mouth, it's just not on his face.
I knew that story would get me a reply.

Just working on my so often neglected figure study. I'm actually quite happy with it, so that can only mean one thing: I'm not good enough to notice all my mistakes yet!
I actually had fun with this, so hopefully that will motivate me to do it more often. I usually get bored so fast with figure studies.

Oh yeah, and Pac-Manley is awesome. ;) So's the guy with machine gun eyes, that was crazy. Who did the guy with chainsaws for eyes, was that Alberto?

I totally forgot about the guy with the chainsaw eyes! That was awesome. I think it was Alberto who did him.

A page of rough Thunderdome sketches. I drew them pretty light so the scanner didn't pick some of them up very well.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Bug.jpg
Another Thunderdome sketch. I just realised way too much of my art these days is insect-themed.
I chose which head I'm going with, now I need to design a body and clothing and such. I should stop typing and go do that now.

Haven't updated this in a while.
I didn't have anything to do at work yesterday, so I sat around drawing all day long. Here's what I drew!
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Critter.jpg
Just a little critter. Despite the fact he has no neck, I still managed to give him a wattle.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Cobra.jpg
I do love drawing pupilless eyes and humongous lips for some reason.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Phallicus.jpg
If nothing else, the workshop inspired me to draw creatures with lots and lots of genitalia.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/JackKincaid.jpg
There's really nothing of interest to say about this picture!
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Hobo.jpg
Would ya look at the size of that guy's head!! It's like an orange on a toothpick! I'm not kidding, it's like Sputnik! Spherical but pointy at parts!
He'll be crying himself to sleep tonight, on his huge pillow.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/Creatures.jpg
A bunch of wierd creatures. I call them (from top left to bottom right) Upside-down Head, Stupid Blade-Horn Face, Tusk Slug, Sentient Onion Ring and Kickass Eye-mouth Guy.
In other news, after two months of not getting paid, I was finally laid off work today! I was actually planning on quitting today anyway, so it all worked out. I just hope I get my money soon.

A robot! I was in the mood for some stark black on white action.
I'm seeing some improvement in getting more interesting shapes and poses out of my characters. They're still too static, but I'm getting there!

I love some of your smaller sketches! They have a nice outline and personality, especially the zombie, the alien on the very bottom near the left, the long-legged robot guy and the guy with the huge butt. :) Fun characters. On some of your work the perspective seems a little off, like on the two digital sketches above your paper stuff. The alligator/sloth looking guy's arms are sort of hard to read, like whether the elbow is pointing in or out, and his left nostril I don't think should be that visible. The mammoth guy under him seems rather unsteady, like he's about to topple over onto his right side. Maybe if you move the position of the right foreleg, it would help him look more balanced.
Keep it up!

It might be just a stylistic preference, but as it is now, his shoulders are so sloped that it looks like his backpack would just slip right off. Since he's very stylized though, that might be your intention. Love the expression!

UNIBEARD!!
Ok, I'm done being a dork. Your character thumbs always make me smile, it makes sense that that's what goes on in your head, in my opinion. :)
I think the style you're working with for the boy is pretty good so far, and I agree with Saph on the expression. :) My only crit is that the head may be a smidge too real/detailed compared to the styling of the body, but that's your call.
0kelvin
April 1st, 2005, 10:58 PM
Sarah: Yeah, you're definitely right. I added the backpack as kind of a last-minute detail and didn't even think about that. I think I probably overdid the sloping shoulders a tad anyway.
Steph: Hehehe, I don't think you're ever done being a dork. Well, at least something about what goes on in my head makes sense. You're right about the boy too. The body is a bit too stylized than what I was aiming for.
Last night I had a dream that I was at another CA workshop and I was hanging out with all you guys at a fast food joint or something and then I woke up and got all depressed that it wasn't real (then my dogs hopped into bed and got me all warm and comfy and I quickly fell back asleep and woke up at the crack of noon). You'd better make it to another one someday, or we'll have to kidnap you to it and replace you with a mannequin and a tape recorder to avert suspicion, Ferris Bueller-style.

I kind of got suckered into going back to my old job, at least for a couple weeks, so I don't know if I'll be able to keep my drawing up for that time. My COW #11: Dream Eater entry. This has gotten me a handful of votes, which I'm very proud of.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Sketchbook/COW11sketch.jpg
My original sketch for the Dream Eater. I'm very glad I started over, it was a pretty boring design. As you can see the micropenis was introduced rather early in the design process. I actually put it in there to emphasize the feeling of violation and rape, which is what I was mainly going for. That's why I changed the victim to a woman, and gave him those long fingers caressing her neck like a rusty spoon.
And here's a sneak preview at my COW 12 entry.

Here's a sketch for the creature. I changed a few things in the final, made him bigger and less cartoony, gave him different ears (because I wanted him a little more ape-like and the ears on this one are a little too similar to my COW #9 Cute But Deadly creature), added some extra arms and actually drew his legs.
I love the COW. It's the best part of CA to come along in a while.

Oh boy, bad bad me for letting this go so long. Been in a bit of dry spell lately. Missed the last two COWs, and really haven't done anything besides the Scorpio-X83 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=485425&postcount=363) lately. Motivation has just been at zero.
So tonight I finally forced myself into doing something!

It's not great, but I had no expectations at all going in so I'm happy with it.
Now to start this week's COW!

I really love the mood in that piece! I enjoy how your colors are muted and toned down; you have a tendency to usually use pretty bright colors. The water's gorgeous. I think it would be cool to see a little more texture on that structure, maybe shiny bits vs. the more dull bits, to give it some variety.

I forgot to thank you for your comment Sapphire! Thank you! I totally agree with what you said.
Thought I'd post my COW from this week here. I have a bad habit of using multiple pictures to illustrate my concept. Next week it's one picture, no exceptions!
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/COW/COW17.jpg
Stumpbill Stomper
The Stumpbill Stomper is the heaviest known flying species of bird. Unlike most birds, its skeletal structure is thick and sturdy. It has immensely strong wings and legs, which allow it to fly despite its heavy frame. However, the birds have very little stamina and are not able to fly long distances at a time. Unable to migrate to warmer climates, the Stumpbill spends its winters hibernating underground. After gorging itself on whatever food it can find for a week or two, the Stumpbill begins its ascent. It flies directly upward for a matter of hours, expending all its energy to get as much altitude as possible. Once the bird has used up the last of its stamina, or the air gets too thin for the bird to fly any higher, the Stumpbill tucks in its wings and goes into a freefall. The Stumpbill hits the ground, beak-first, with enough force to bury itself ten to twenty feet underground. The impact knocks it unconscious, but its sturdy frame usually prevents any major injuries. That is, unless it misses the soft earth of the hills and lands in the rocky valley. Just be thankful I don't have an illustration of that tragic scenario.

The top half of that bird is fabulous, especially the eye! It has a lot of roundness and life to it. However, the bottom half of the bird is much weaker, and I think the feet need more attention. It looks like there's no weight on them, and for a supposedly heavy bird, you really need to show that weight-bearing bone structure.

Yeah, you're definitely right about his legs. I didn't notice it before you mentioned it. Thanks for the help! Warm fuzzies all around!

This is my Sewer Beast COW entry which I didn't finish in time to make it to the poll.

Perfumed Banshet
In order to attract a mate, the male Perfumed Banshet developed the ability to produce a very pleasant, sweet-smelling odour. This has made them very popular among the sewage workers in Castletown, who will take a Banshet to accompany them into the sewer pipes in order to mask the horrid smells. The Banshets, who have very sensitive noses but cannot smell their own odour, are not happy with this arrangement.

For anyone that's wondering, I'm working on my piece for the mega-Thunderdome throw down going on. My opponent is nicolas, so I'm more or less doomed, but I'm hoping the pressure will push me to a new level. The picture I'm doing is definitely more ambitious than any I've done. I'm not sure whether I'm going to post any WIPs, I think everyone is keeping their stuff under wraps until the unveiling to heighten the suspense. Well, maybe a teaser or two in the days to come.

Round 1 of the Thunderdome is over (besides the judging part), so I finally have something concrete to post here. The topic was Demon Prince. I came up with a pretty solid idea right off the bat that played to my strengths, but at the same time was a huge challenge. This version is slightly touched up from the version I entered.
The Demon Prince in my piece is a young boy who rallies the spirits, creatures, ghouls and demons of the forest and unites them against certain human parties who want to encroach on the magical woods for their own gain. He isn't necessarily evil, but since he is leading the monsters in a battle against humans, people came to call him The Demon Prince.
Most of the monsters in the picture have a story behind them, but I think it's more fun to leave it to your imagination.

I agree with Carnifex. The whole piece has a fun "Glow" to it. I especially like the character with the purple suit and cigar. Kind of reminds me of the Glukkons (Sp?) from Oddworld the game :teeth:. The one that makes me laugh especially the most is the little guy riding the Bulldog. Good job and nice Sketchbook.

http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/Thunderdome/0kelvinVSposhspice_TD.jpg
My Round 2 Thunderdome piece. I got pulled in as a replacement in the last week of the contest so it's a bit of a rush job, but I think it stands up fairly well.
Here's a few recent CoW's I've done.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/COW/COW21.jpg
The Shoal is perhaps the most unique creature we’ve ever discovered. It isn’t even a conventional life-form at all. At least not as we know them. Whereas all the lifeforms we are familiar with are made up of cells, the Shoal is made up of trillions of slug-like multi-cellular organisms. These organisms come together to form a massive amorphous blob capable of living in the vacuum of space. Astoundingly, although each individual organism has barely the brain capacity of an infant leech, the creature as a whole seems to be entirely sentient, if not intelligent.
We’ve managed to recover three species of the slugs. We think the Shoal probably consists of thousands of different species. These three range anywhere from half an inch to a foot long. Species 1 doesn’t seem to have a specific purpose, but it makes up the majority of the creature’s body mass. Species 2 is mildly photosensitive and by gathering millions of these slugs together and having them all sharing information, the creature is able to form an eye of amazing resolution. Species 3 has a beak that can be used to break down whatever the creature absorbs into its body into food, which is then distributed throughout the body. Very few of these live on the outer surface of the creature, but we think that there are likely millions of them inside. By our calculations, it could "digest" this ship and everything in it in a matter of seconds. Luckily for us, so far he seems friendly enough.

Inset: School of giant squid.
Inset: Inset: A giant squid, which last week would've been hot shit to see, but now is just kinda neat.
Jumbo Shrimp Jelly Cocktail!
October 7, 2005: In what is being called the most important week in the history of marine biology, yet another new magnificent species has been discovered by scientists. It began as the research team aboard the USS Mysticeti sent a submersible to further study their newly discovered giant jelly (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=609696&postcount=33). They followed the jellyfish deep into the highly volcanic Tonga trench and were astounded to watch it be promptly devoured by what the scientists have dubbed the Jumbo Shrimp. Measuring nearly a full league (4.8 km) from tail to head, it has surpassed the Japanese Spider Crab as the world's largest crustacean (by roughly 1200 times). After returning to the surface and putting on a fresh pair of pants, Professor W. T. Sherman of the research team said, "This is by far the largest organism the world has ever seen, and will ever see, because anything bigger than this would just be silly. Don't even try to come up with something larger, this is the absolute limit for believable size." The Jumbo Shrimp is believed to feed primarily on the schools of hundreds of giant squid swimming nearby.

very entertaining, I like the thunderdome piece and the giant shrimp COW, good execution. However, I don't quite agree with your color choices, the giant shrimp has decent colors, but most of your colors are kinda dull and don't really fit into any type of a theme. Try painting little swatches of color, like 4 or 5 colors mixed and abstractly put close to each other, then stand back and see which ones look the best to you. Also try looking at bengal, sparth, craig mullins (http://www.goodbrush.com) and andrew jones' work for good color use and take note of the color themes they use frequently.
Carnifex
October 11th, 2005, 03:39 PM
the jumbo shrimp is my favourite. i voted for you,and henceforth you shall know why: i just love the feeling of depth. with those lava lines at the bottom you made it seem really deep,so deep that the creature is near the core of earth. the size comparison works so-so,because it's too huge to imagine. still,a very fine piece of artwork. you are improving.

October 19th, 2005, 05:22 PM
Thanks for the vote and the crit Carnifex!
Mr. Blonde: Yeah, I have to be more careful when I'm using colours. I usually start off with a colour scheme of some kinds, but it tends to get away from me as I work on it. I'll be more aware of that in the future. Thanks for the crit!

Big Blue Blood-Blistered Blabbermouth
The Big Blue Blood-Blistered Blabbermouth (or Beebeebeebeebee) is a begrimed, bilious beast whose body breaks out in bulbous blood blisters because of it's bawdy, blasphemous behaviour. The blisters balloon up with blood until they break open and bleed or burst with a bang, bespattering the brute's blighted blood over the barren beaches and babbling brooks of Baldwin Barony. The blood of the Beebeebeebeebee bears billions of bugs and bacteria, and any bloke with the bad break of being bathed in the bloody spray of a bloated Beebeebeebeebee blister better bid breathing bye-bye.

Here's my COW for this week, the topic was Sand Hunter.
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/COW/COW54final.jpg
The strange creature was first discovered as a pup, curled up in the third sandtrap of Hole 14 of the Hidden Butte Country Club Golf Course, by the course groundskeeper Applesweep. At that time it was no bigger than a small dog. Mr. Applesweep took the timid creature back to his shack and shared his lunch with him. They formed a bond immediately, and Applesweep would find the creature sitting in the bunker every day, waiting for him.
Over the following months, Applesweep realized the creature was growing at an alarming rate. It would soon be far too large to keep hidden at the golf course. He tried to take it home one night, but in the morning there was nothing in his yard but a large hole, and when he arrived at the golf course that morning he found the creature waiting in the third sandtrap of Hole 14.
After the fatalities began to happen, Applesweep came to regret letting the creature live underneath Hole 14. But even more than that, he came to regret teaching him how to play fetch.

Wow, man, you're really improving! I miss you tons, btw, and I love that detailed TD piece you did (I see a Speak N' Spell! That takes me back...) I think your rendering off textures is improving all the time. I would post more, but I JUST got the internet installed at my new place, and

This is the first pumpkin I've carved like this, I usually do the standard cut-out jack-o-lantern face. I'm pretty proud of it, seeing as the last time I did anything in 3 dimensions, I was probably still playing with play-doh. I'll have to do more of this kind of thing, I really enjoyed it.

Although it's old, I still think this one (http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/images/CA/COW/COW17.jpg) has soo much charisma. You've improved sooo much since then too. It's crazy :x It's also good to see you're jumping from one thing to another - trying out lots of styles and media. Nice one :)

Carnifex: Thanks for the frequent comments, man! I agree that the third one is the closest resemblance to me.
Sapphire: I used photos a bit for reference on the top two, but did the bottom two from imagination. It's funny, I never think that photos of myself look that much like me, and the one I don't use any photos for ends up resembling me the most. I guess I was right!
blacky: Thanks! Glad you liked the thumb, I'm so pumped for Guitar Hero 2!
Quicksilver: Thanks! I sometimes lose track of the fact that I am improving. I always feel like I'm slacking with my art because I'm only doing stuff I enjoy and it never feels like work, so it doesn't feel like I should be getting better. But that's usually when I do my most improvement, when I'm having fun with it.

I got back from the workshop feeling inspired. Not so much inspired to do art this time, but inspired to move on with my life and career. I finally got around to learning HTML and a bit of CSS and coded it by hand this time around, rather than using Frontpage. I did this in the four days between getting back from the workshop and Christmas Eve.

I started a new project of sorts, just to give myself an excuse to draw. I'm designing a series of characters called 19 Legends of Kung Fu. I have no idea how many I'll do before I get bored and move onto something else, but 19 seemed like a reasonable number.

Han Solo & Mr. Chewbacca
Han Solo is a notorious gambler, con artist and smuggler. Mr. Chewbacca is his Wookiee partner in crime. The duo is wanted by both the Empire and a number of underworld crime lords, but they manage to stay one step ahead of their pursuers thanks to their ship, the Millennium Falcon, said to be the fastest ship in the galaxy. Solo is also known for his quick draw with a pistol. He boasts that of all the men he's shot, not a single one was able to shoot first.
105258
Lord Vader
More machine than man, Vader is the Empire's most decorated General and a very powerful practitioner of the Force's dark arts. He is obsessed with communicating with the spirits of the dead, spending every sleepless night trying in vain to contact his lost love. Twisted and broken in body and mind, Vader is driven with sadistic passion.
He is a master with the traditional weapon of Force champions, the Phlogisticated Aether Torch, more commonly referred to as the phlogisabre.
105259
Jabba the Hutt
Jabba the Hutt is the ruler of the desert planet Tattooine. Formerly an underworld crime boss, Jabba took the throne in a bloody coup. It's rumoured during the coup he was being supplied weapons by the Empire, but once in power he turned his back on them and continued his illegal activities with far more power and wealth than he could have ever amassed in the underworld.
Jabba is a model of opulence and excess. His corpulence is the physical embodiment of all seven mortal sins. He dresses only in fine Sarlacc silks, regularly partakes in feasts of rare and endangered animals such as the giant Krayt Dragon, and has a harem of concubines representing every humanoid species known in the galaxy.

Massive Solar-Orbiting Electro-Mechanical Analytic Engine, Mark 6
This enormous Imperial space station, the size of a small moon or asteroid, is in fact an immense analytic engine, a device capable of making millions of calculations every day. Inside is kilometer after kilometer of tubes and wheels, cranks and gears, all spinning and clacking, spitting out an endless series of numbers for the Imperials scientists to decipher.
Although the Empire has half a dozen such devices in operation throughout the galaxy, this version is unique. While the others spend their days crunching statistical algorithms or calculating flight models, the Mark 6 station (under the personal watch of Lord Vader) is dedicated to experiments with Arcane Mathematics, the mathematical study of the Force. They hope to discover a unified Force theory, allowing them to fuse the power of the Force with their technology to create unspeakably powerful weapons. The station already houses a product of this research, a terrible weapon capable of directing a coherent beam of pure Force energy[1], strong enough to destroy all life on an entire planet. This weapon has earned the station the nickname of "Death Star".
[1]As it has not yet been discovered a way for machines to directly generate Force energy, it must be supplied by a powerful Force user. The user conjures the energy inside of a specially designed resonance chamber which amplifies the energy before directing it through a series of lenses to produce a powerful coherent beam of unimaginably destructive energy.

A new Steampunk Star Wars piece:
114965
Sir Obi Wan Kenobi
As a young man in the days of the Republic, Sir Obi Wan Kenobi was an agent for the Jedi League of Force Champions. He is intimately acquainted with the dark side of the force, as he spent nearly a decade undercover within the Sith Brotherhood, secretly trying to uncover the identity of the organization's Patriarch. His time on the dark side left permanent scars upon his soul and to this day he battles the temptation to indulge his darker emotions.
When his identity was compromised and he was forced to escape the Sith Brotherhood, Obi Wan returned to the Jedi League. Many years of service later, he was chosen to mentor a new agent to continue his undercover work: a young boy named Anakin, groomed by the League especially for this role. Obi Wan spent many years raising and training the boy, but when the time came for Anakin to infiltrate the Brotherhood he was overwhelmed and seduced by the power it offered him. He ultimately betrayed Obi Wan and the League, forcing Obi Wan to kill him. Whatever remained of Anakin after that battle became the creature known as Lord Vader.
Obi Wan has spent the last twenty years living as a hermit on Tatooine, hidden from the Empire, studying the secrets of the Force and keeping watch over a child he swore an oath to protect.

Hello...I wanted to write in your book some time ago already... your humor attracted me. I went again through the whole thread and your portfolio and had the same amiable feeling of wonderful, soft, good -natured irony, not sarcastic at all, pretty mild, never aimed at anyone personally.
In the same time and I hope you forgive me for that I felt another impression from your art... you are in a very strange relationship with straight and round lines... you overuse straight lines and sharp angles and avoid round lines like plaque... even when you need to use round lines you draw them step by step composed from short straight strokes... you are very unsatisfied with what comes in the end and redraw those lines many times and they look thick and heavy and dead... I wonder why you do that... it looks like it is a digital drawing and it is uncomfortable for you hand to lead one smooth line.
I wish it was different. I can't divert my attention from the tension in those lines and you know it carries certain mood, sometimes an opposite to the one you want to achieve.
It is a good thing when you draw invisible elephant man who is rough and square... but in monkey man this lack of flexibility is disturbing.
It is just my wishes of course, but lines can tell story on their own... careless, bold, fast lines show me certain personality ... I know it would add so much if the lines int he picture were running, chasing each other or just being very easy to bend.
Colors unfortunately have the same quality, IMO. they are a bit too straightforward and lacking sophistication and meaning... the look just like some random color you took from a palette.
but saying all that I still can't not notice that you do see and understand the fine transitions of colors and values... it is just strange that you prefer your images like that... pretty laconic in color...
Sometimes I think you could add contrast and deepness.
Like in this last picture for example I would like some darkness under his beard to increase deepness and maybe even a mood...
and in those images:
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/2d/Sandhunter.jpg
http://www.whereismyeyeball.com/2d/Totem.jpg
but you prefer your images hanging in middle or low values. i do see that it is probably conscious decision and I hesitate to argue with your own choice.
Sometimes your images have curious proportions distortions... your creatures and humans are always stylized... but still ... sometimes it looks too much on grotesque side... like in Flying Squirrel ... his arms are way bigger and longer than his legs... maybe you flipped this image upside down and painted all over again like with the cowboy head ;).
But anyways, you have a lot good things happening and it is your sensitivity for one... despite straightforward colors and uncompromisable lines... your themes and face expressions and body language and story behind the character and details and wonderful finds to tell about who it is in front of us are very witty and fresh and humorous and rich... Like center of eyes of the dreamfeeder for example... little details, but it is really scary and disgusting looking, those furry things in his eyes instead of pupils... they make me look harder into his eyes and it is hypnotic together with dull gray and sucking illusion...
you don't have one definite style going on in your picture... You are not easily recognizable... for me it is a good thing though...
Judging from your gun 'Lolita... hehe that's the name noone would be able to come with for a gun... and td Escape... you can do all what I wrote is lacking in your pictures... But I would say your performance is very not even.
Anatomy is very stylized in your pictures... those noodles like legs without any muscles and angles arms... but maybe it is the way you like it to be.
Ideas and humor and deepness in how you see your character are great... but execution is not always convincing... but I see that you can do it. you have very many great pieces in your book.
That's all... hope you take it with grain of salt... it is just my opinion.

In my opinion, you won the first round of LMS. Seriously. Yours was the funnest and most memorable image by far. So many different fun things happening, so many different stories being told. How did you create this image, though? Pencil tool set at one pixel in Photoshop? Microsoft Paint? I'm curious.

Hyver: Thanks man! I knew I had to do something really unexpected to stand out among 300+ artists. I'm glad it seems to have worked! Thanks for the crits too.
Moai: Thanks, that's some high praise considering all the competition. I created it almost entirely using the pencil tool in Photoshop.

You've gotten so awesome. I really am diggin' that steampunk Star Wars piece. Did you use photographed textures? How'd you get the look? I have a lot of trouble with mechanics, and I have to design this mech, so yeah... pointers! :)
I also really like the loose, multifacted color in your "mat dixony" speedpaint. IT doesn't look overworked, whereas your earlier stuff the creatures looked a little overworked/claylike.
I miss you lots already!

woo!!! love it man! really inspiring to watch someone progress like you!!!
If i have one thing to comment, is about the rendering. The common mistake we all do when working without refference, is that we put to work all of the light and shade rules we know... So we tend to come up with very realistic designs, that still look artificial.
a couple of reasons are:
however specific the lightsource, light bounces and spreads, so shaded parts aren't actually as dark as we tend to imagine them, and highlighted areas likewise.
minor form irregularities, like the folds of a cloth, have a far greater effect than calculated, so that a cylindrical shading on an arm , although correct in theory, gives a very unreal result
finally, we usually tend to be so dramatic in our contrast, trying to define our forms, that we make things float, or not relate to one another... F.e. the phlogisabre, it doesn't actually touch the ground, or relate to the person behind it.
Just passing knowledge here of course, these are pointers I got for my work, and I desperately try to put them in action...so far not that succesfully :D
keep up the really cool work!!!! oh, and your LMS idea rocks man!!!!

It needs repeating, your LMS entry is nine separate kinds of awesome (and that's a lot.) congratulations on creating something that sticks out amongst hundreds of others!
How long did it take you? sooo many pixels...

Sapphire: For my mechanical stuff, I usually use a lot of brushes made out of random objects chopped out of photos. I basically just start throwing down lots of random shapes, mostly to define the silhouette, and then refine from there. Then at the end I usually throw some photo textures on top as well.
TheJester: Thanks man, that's some good advice. I'll definitely keep that in mind.
Mihail: Thanks!
donkeyslayer: Thanks, it was great hanging out with you too.
octopus_interphone: Thanks! I'm not sure how long it took total, but it was a lot of hours. Let's just say I had to take full advantage of every deadline extension.
Idiot Apathy: Totally man, I had a blast! Thanks.
And just because I don't want to have two posts in a row with no art, here's a quicky I hope I haven't posted before.

Dude that Steampunk Star Wars has me amazed. I wonder, did you try it in sepia tone? Of course that might be a dumb question. It might make them look too western.

Thanks for the comments guys!
I actually started this illustration nearly a year ago. I wasn't at all happy with it, and just recently I got inspired to try another go at it. I tore it apart and made it into something I'm quite happy with.
I never did fix that stupid gun design, though.
Don't mind the lengthy biography, I know nobody's going to bother to read that whole thing. The more I flesh out this (version of the) world in my head, the longer I take to describe the characters (this is already half the length it was originally). I really need to be more concise. I just find my own ideas so damn interesting that I'm sure the whole world wants to read them in excruciating detail.

Lady Leia Organa, Princess of Alderaan
Alderaan was once considered the cultural and artistic heart of the galaxy. Although the Empire claimed dominion over all planets, it left Alderaan largely to govern itself, wary of inciting revolt on such a powerfully influential world.
As a member of Alderaan's royal family, Leia grew up in the lap of luxury. During her childhood she was widely adored as a public darling, famous for her curly hair and her performances of the Alderaan Global Anthem at royal events. However, as a teenager she suddenly withdrew from the public spotlight and began studying at a private school. This withdrawal coincided with the unprecedented government censorship of a popular musical (Gilbert & Snootles' HMS Executor, a comic opera that was highly critical of the Empire), an act which drew much ire from the people of Alderaan, who saw it as the royal family bowing to Imperial pressure.
When she turned 17, Leia joined the Alderaanian military (although the royal family was not technically exempt from Alderaan's mandatory year of military service, Leia was the first princess in over 400 years to actually serve her time). After two years in the service, she had become an adept marksman and had even led a number of peacekeeping missions in Rodian territories. It is believed that it was during this time that she joined the Resistance, and may have even had a hand in organizing it into the significant force it became.
Soon after, Leia finished her studies and became an ambassador. Her fiery, confident personality and sharp intellect made her a very strong and influential diplomat extremely critical of Imperial policies. Her speeches and public image were instrumental in generating sympathy for the rebel cause. Using her diplomatic connections and consular ship to gain access to highly guarded information and smuggle supplies, she was an integral member of the Resistance.

Nice I really love it! I like the way you use colors I still have to study that but I will do that after I feel a bit confident with some anatomy studies.Maybe If I'm getting bored with anatomy I'll just try painting for a start!

nyssa, Kfeeras: Thanks!
I've been slacking on the drawing lately, at least outside of work. Even though I haven't been flexing my drawing muscles, I have been concepting creatures like mad, thanks to the Spore Creature Creator.

Bah! Less Creature Creator, more *painting* what you'd make in Creature Creator (at the very least)!
Just kidding, we all need a break sometime. :D Some excellent work you have here. One thing I did notice at one time or another though: a lot of the time when your pictures focus on one or two characters, I can't help but feel the character is aware of the "camera's" presence... This isn't the case with *all* of your pictures, but still a few of them; and even if they're not looking directly at the camera, thinking they're aware of its presence can end up making the shot look staged or fake slightly.
Try practicing having something in shot or out of shot that is drawing ALL of the characters attention: their body language attempting to dodge something that's been thrown at them by a character out-of-shot, them looking at something above them / not at the camera with a shocked look on their face etc, instead of smiling almost like they are posing.
I'm not attacking your work or anything; it looks fantastic, but there's no such thing as a "perfect picture", though constructive feedback can help you get as close as you possibly can to it. :)

Hey Eric, it was cool hanging out with you in NZ, how's Canada these days?
This whole Steampunk Starwars project looks really cool, man. That pixelart TDome was freakin' awesome...
I hafta give you a hard time on some stuff though...you've got an overall tendency to make everything too soft and blobby. Beware those soft-edged brushes man! unless everything you're making is chrome and plastic it tends to a bad habit...for one thing all your shapes start to look like they were squeezed out of a toothpaste tube. Case in point: too many of your characters have limbs that are just tubes and sausage-style fingers and toes (by contrast, your faces DO look pretty good).
You've got a bunch of cool ideas for mechanical designs, but they deserve to be in three dimensions and more understandably rendered...you want to be communicating the forms, not just suggesting them.
As to the spore creatures :) well...they really do show what's probably your greatest strength: prolific creativity.
But, they tend to reinforce your main bad habit: lazy abstracted shapes. So...do a painting of each and every one of these beasties with muscles, bones, and tendons under their skin. DO EET!

Bludhund: Thanks for the critique man, you hit the nail on the head. That's a problem I've known I had for a while, but I really need to get a reminder that I need to shake it now and then. It was great hanging out with you in NZ too!
Here are a few things I doodled in what little spare time I've had lately. Some character and robot designs for a game idea I've been playing with.
