If so, where and when?

but eh! people..
what about the next european workshop getting place in Spain? Madrid or Barcelona for example. Nice cities and you know.. (Spain) land of Velazquez, Goya, Sorolla, Murillo, Gaudí, Picasso, Dalí, Miró.. and many others!

Mmmm, Prague sounds do-able ... flights there from the UK are pretty damn cheap!
One word of advice to the organisers, though - I'd seriously consider making it the first week of September, preferably the first few days.
I know there are many students in Europe (I'm one of them!) who would love to attend, but our school terms start early in September, and therefore it might be tricky getting time off school/university to get there in the middle of the month, especially at the start of a new academic year.
A few days at the very beginning of September for the workshop would be ideal, since it would make the workshop accessible to a much larger potential audience...
Just a thought!

Whats with the LA haters? Its like I'm watching ESPN.
You guys cut me deep in a very special place...
I'm extremely happy the big nasty mainstream film and gaming communities dont share your dislike of our great weather and vibrant cultural mix. Hopefully your slighted opinions won't hurt our multi-billion dollar tourist or entertainment industries. Of which I'm confident our respective vocations rely.
Only kidding of course, I know that wasnt your light-hearted if not off color intent. Although I can think plenty of other cities in this great land of ours that truly deserve that title, I wouldn't be so fast to hand them the trophy.
Cheers Phil, I love LA as well. It would be a great opportunity to bring out some heavy LA hitters as you suggested.
Newport more than Laguna would be nice also or perhaps Santa Monica more than Venice, imo Jason.
Born in Burbank, raised in LA now live on the beach. What up, haters. Wait, how's the weather outside...?

As for workshops, after Europe why not pack up and take the show to Canada? :canadapatriot:
I think we have enough Canadian member here that would be forever gratefull to the powers that be for such a kind present to us. A number of perks to holding the next workshop in Canada would be:
1) Places like Montreal, Quebec city, Vancouver, Toronto. They all have a pretty vibrant art art community and culture, possibly with Montreal having an edge in this regard.
2) :canadian: We are the 2nd Largest nation (by land area) in the world.
3) Our money is rubbish and pretty much everyone will get a good exchange rate here.

I actually disagree with Manley on something!
Phil says: The valley is way cheap to stay in. Hotels range from $35 a night and up. People have taken taxis at both workshops now. I don't know if we can beat Austin on cab prices, but the average cost to get from one end of the valley to the other is $7-9. That's cheap.
Hmmmm. What else. Locations are nice a cheap. Maybe even free, but that's more work. Continental art supply is pretty close by.
Plus we have restaurants and fun places open way late. Yeah.
All I'm saying is check out the valley. West Hills, Woodland Hills, Chatsworth. That area basically around Topanga Canyon Blvd. Come down here man. See it for yourself. There are large empty buildings that can be rented out man. Like 140,000 square feet. You'd have to rent chairs and get some tables and things, but I bet it can still be done cheaper in this area. Ask some people at Neversoft if they like the valley :)
Venice would be cool, but then you get back up in the things closing early and more expensive cab stuff. Venice is cool if you live near the water, but the rest of it pretty crappy. I don't know many large venue locations down there either. But, the beach would be awesome....... Hell, I don't live there and it's close to work!
Bah. Not an argument, just a suggestion.
Cheers!

Will a workshop like this ever grace the lands of Southern Africa?? I've prepared a mini essay many months ago to be posted here but was afraid that it wouldn't be taken into consideration. But I don't care anymore so I'll just post it.
It's just a direct copy&paste:
---Start---
I've been lurking around here for quite some time now and I have noticed that there have been that there has already been a few workshops that have taken placed over that last few years. If memory serves me correct, Amsterdam is one of the places where a workshop had taken place. This means that it is not bound to only the US. So my question to you is, Would there be any chance of a workshop taking place in South Africa?
For many years now, there has been really little change in the way art is taught in SA. In the current school I attend, the drawing/painting side seems to be rather lacking. A lot of people who have studied there and compared it to the universities claim that this school is probably one of the best in SA. But when I look at some of the Atliers in the US and Europe and I compare it to my school… there's just no comparison. My mission to find an Atlier or something that looks like an Atlier has been nothing but failures. I've tried to organise a figure drawing group but it always ends up in a serious flop due to students having problems of their own or a lack of motivation/inspiration. In the end, I just go home and do self portraits and Barque drawings hoping something would change. Studying overseas for me (and many others) is not really an option since I'm quite restricted by funds.
The school I attend tends to be more on the design side of things (you can check www.openwindow.co.za to see the structure their course), but they do seem to want to give 3D animation a boost (since that's what most of the students come to this school for). But from the way things seem to be, I really doubt that the 3D will go very far any time soon.
I think it's time to conclude what I want to say. I really think that a Workshop like this would be very inspirational and make the students and the lecturers realise that there is a need for better Art education in SA.
---End---
I hope someone reads it. :^^:

Plenty of Museums(most are free, the prices are suggested not mandatory)
No cabbing cause everything and anything is accessbile via subway...(you would purchase a 7-day pass for 21 dollars and easily get your monies worth in 2 days into the Shop)
I live there(had to throw that one in)
And so many art schools that getting people to attend in the area would be ridiculous...
but whatever, wherever..i'm down

DC sounds good, but I don't really know how the hotel/location situation would work. I grew up outside of the area and rode the metro in almost every weekend... it's pretty ghetto outside the touristy areas, and I'm assuming the workshop space would be away from the Mall and L'Enfant Plaza... but I'm guessing Jason has a better idea of the options than I do. The metro runs a pretty good distance, so it could be outside of the city and the museums could still be accessible.
The museums are some of the best the country has to offer, and they're all free. It's great.

here it goes another vote for.. Spain!! (Jaku ;)
now going serious.. as i wrote some days ago in this thread saying about some workshop getting place in Spain in the future, it's a great country, with great museums, beaches (at the cost) and nice places for a workshop.
But now i have thought about an idea, please let me explain you:
ok, we have workshops in either united states and europe every year. first usa, then europe. right, that's ok. now having read many of the opinions here written i think that this would be COOL:
the main idea is rotating the locations where the workshop takes place so everyone or at least a big number of people can get into some workshop.
so every year in each country (usa/europe) it moves from east to west or from west to east covering a very big space.
(for example)
* year 'x':
- usa workshop: san francisco
- european ws: prague
* year 'x+1'
- usa workshop: austin(/vancouver?)
- european ws: paris/london
* year 'x+2'
- usa workshop: new york city
- european ws: spain
and then repeat.
here the usa workshops moves from west to east.
and the european one from east to west.
catch the idea? well, what are your opinions?
thanks for reading.

 I'm good for any CA Workshop in the North-eastern US, from New York down to Virginia whenever it goes down, so long as i have at least 6 to 8 months to prepare for it. I am a bit curious about something though, with so many folks in so many spread out places in North America, maybe either cooking up something like a small seminar kind of thing in various States/Provinces or encouraging folks to refer each other to beneficial infomation options already going on in their area would be more accomodating to folks who can't do the international traveling thing.

Hey, I know that Im a lamen around here but, I feel that Canada would be a great deal... Its inexpensive, great culture, cheap eats, cheap hotels, nice night life (for those interested), and a very relaxed environment. Canada has to be one of the most neutral areas to go to... anyways, thats my 2 cents...

I'm in New York , so that would be awesome for me, but I can understand why you wouldn't want to do it at this point. Boston or DC is a pretty decent East Coast alternative.
Perhaps I'll have my own workshop from my living room on feeding cats and putting newborns to sleep. Tuition is free.

I'm suprised Montreal got fans :) The city is full of festivals ALL THE TIME. Even in winter, we're currently in the Lights festival. I was walking around downtown the other day and it looked like they were building sliding ramps in the middle of the main streets. Trucks upon trucks of snow... :o
In the summer there's Jazz festival which is indeed huge, just for laughs, nights of africa, etc. PARTY ON !

February 19th, 2005, 05:08 PM
Yeah, I mentioned this earlier in the thread - having the workshop in the 1st/2nd week of September really alienates a lot of European students who have the first week of a new academic year to attend (usually fairly important - not so easy to miss!)... the last week of August would be perfect, I think, since it would allow all those students to make it to the workshop and not miss out on any education or enrolment...
Surely it's not so difficult to make it a week earlier? From a business point of view, you'd get more customers, which equals more money... and from a CA.org point of view, you'd get even more people attending! Makes sense, yeah?
Canada in 2006 sounds good

it was $530 , $600 if you paid late and the price was higher in san francisco because its a really expensive city.
Austin was only $400 for the tutition. so figure between 400-600 for the $ goal to save for and you should be fine

I think the experience as a whole is worth it. and the Berlin one wasnt realy an official CA workshop, it was something andrew and marko put together.
The official ones are alot more varied, from digital artist to traditional, sculpting, 3d, you name it. And seeig something created live infront of you really helps to undersstand How and why, and is mutch easier to learn from then a book.

Yes... this
as things look due to deadlines mb faces we are going to bump the date to october. we have layil headed to prague to scope locations and hotels soon. should have more info shortly.
for now the list of instructors looks like andrew, marko, myself, michael hussar, black frog, puddnhead and aleksi. there may be one or two others making the trip. will wait and see.
we are limiting the size of the workshop this time around. amsterdam was as big as i like them. we are all looking forward to how prague turns out.

Prague is probably one of the wickedest places in the world. Beautiful, enchanting, and fun. Dont forget to check out the Charles Bridge, where the portrait and carricature artists hang out.
