I hope they get this one right. Weta's involvement is definitely a good sign and I love what I've seen so for. For the most part though, I think nowadays disney doesn't actually "make" movies and really just throws money at them and slaps their name on the front... Which is probably best for everyone.

imagination is overrated anyway.

who needs to read books when we could just turn every intellectual property into a movie.

Yeah, hopefully Disney only has their name on it, and hasn't interfered. It looks kewl, those shots of them in production, looked very good.

I used to think that way when it came to LOTR. Who'd read the books when you have a big-budget 12 hour movie? After watching all of the extended editions, I concluded that really all you have is an interpretation of the book and nothing more. It's certainly not a substitute and I think Peter Jackson or anyone who's worked on that film would agree. Someone who might truly appreciate the Lord of the Rings will not settle for the movie experience but they'll want to read what directly inspired it. Movie adaptations are for people with short attention spans or fans who want to see how others might envision a story that they've already come to appreciate. Either way though, when the film version of Fellowship of the Ring came out, the LOTR books had started selling faster then when they were originally published.

The LOTR movies were as good as could be expected, if not better. Many props to the whole crew.

Thing is, every time I read the book now, I'll be fighting with images of Viggo Mortinsen and Sean Astin. Isengard, and the Eye of Sauron. Treebeard and Gimli's combat blunders....

Why not put all that talent and energy into something fresh, instead of great works of literature from times gone by. Sometimes imagination is the best medium to experience something, and in Chronicles of Narnia (among others), I think this is the case.

first off, what the hell is this movie about anyway?!
it looks like to me like a spin-off from the tolkien universe.
WETA workshops greatley impresses me. And for disney, screw them. if they can't make great movies like they did before, they are no longer disney, but another fucking publisher. I'm dissapointed with how disney isn't doing any of their own stuff... i'm still quite skeptical about this movie's story and such.
i wouldn't waste my time on a movie with a shitty story.

Well, Narnia was acctually a sort of inspiration for Middle Earth, and vice versa. CS Lewis and Tolkien were buddies. So you'll find many similarities between the two stories. Anyways, guess Disney's trying to make up for the fact that they turned down Harry Potter, and I think TLOTR as well (not totally sure on that one.) I think this movie's going to turn out really well. Too bad when I go see it, my money's going to F$@&ing Eisner's pocket. :er:

ps...The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is a really quick and easy read. You should defintaly check it out. :teeth:

Acctually, the stories are quite well known. They are aimed at a younger audience then Lord of the Rings, but they are nontheless very good books. (9 in total if I remember correct) And since, as Nero's Master mentioned, C.S. Lewis and Tolkien were good buddies, that hung out in the same circle of people, they are set in a similar world. They even gave eachother criticism and input when each was writing their books.

If Disney doesn't mess it up like normal, then they should acctually be very good.

So I take it King Kong and the much rumoured "Evangelion" project isn't going on? I thought Peter Jackson is already in the works with Kong.

Disney is a money making entity, so they'll want to let the professionals do their job.

Yes, Kong is filming now, Weta is handling effects on both. Andy Serkis will be providing the "performance" for Kong, same as he did for Gollum.
