So again phil holland woke us all up and came walking into our room to get us moving for the day. while others had headaches from the party the night before i seemed to be free of any problems. today was an unusual day. i was slower to leave than normal so i could post my big write up of day 2 before it deleted itself on the mac prior to posting. i dont like macs right now.

ok so i am hanging out at my room and all of a sudden my cell starts ringing. it seems the part took its toll on everyones time table and the gates to the workshop were closed and it was raining like crazy. i got 6 calls from people who wanted me to try to get a hold of manley or anyone in charge. i dont have the numbers to everyone so i called brYan who was with the group of pros and he said he would get on it. well manley was on his way and got there minutes after my call to open the gates. i know he and all the other pros had a very good time at the party.

so after my computer problems i decided to make my own way torwards the workshop site seeing looking for kool buildings worth drawing. well it was raining and pouring and well i wasn't snoring anymore. i finally get there after getting hit up by all the bums on the way. remarkably none were offering to fight the terential downpour to lead me into a darkalley way to mug me in the tenderloin district.

as i walk in following ron lemen and the crew i get to see justin sweet doing a demo on the 60' screen. i swear all of his art should be that big. it was a bad ass demo. we also had 2 more models that were awesome. so after some life sketching i went to go see what was going to be happening. i ran into frank cho an amazing comic artist whose art/comic strips is the perfect blend of big boobs, cartoon characters and giant monkeys. we chatted for a little bit and he eagerly awaited jon fosters oil demo.

lunch break came around and i went down to quiznos like 50 other people and it only had light rain. but as soon as we entered it started pouring and the streets were 4 inches under water. it was a fun trek back after wating for 30 minutes just to get our food. poor bojee was 20 people deep in waiting after he ordered. needless to say when we all got back we were soaked to the bone. i cant complain since it is raining in san diego too.

Foster is the man and his process is awesome. so i sat down next to HPX and waited like the millions of others for him to start. after a couple jokes about coros brush state(all heavily used and should have been thrown out) manley brings him a new set of brushes to play with and he starts. HPX who is currently trying to fight the plague that is attacking all of the pros finally had closed his eyes and getting restful sleep. but this was at the begining of fosters demo so i had to nudge him to wake him up. i know i liked fosters work and really wanted to see how it would turn out so i had to have him watch too.

durring fosters demo jp targete was furthering his work on his bad ass painting that he had started after doing some comps earlier in the day that each had some really kool things. so taking the best of all of his comps he layed in one really bad ass picture. i cant wait to see the finish.

so then other demos like nox's were going on i was just randomly sketchign when the other pros decided they wanted to oil paint. Ron and vanessa lemen, kevin llwelyn, mike hussar, justin sweet all grapped their oils and setup on the main stage. poor oblio was so slammed with things to try to get done it took a bit to get the lighting right for them but once they did the painting started. two wonderful ladies stepped up for them to draw for a long painting that will continue tomorrow morning. ron took on the full scene with both ladies, vanessa decided her spot was best for a singal portrait, mike was sketching in a head/torso vingette, kevin set his up to look like a portrait of both ladies, adn justin jumped right in with one head basically well rendered with the other soon to be drawn. i cant wait to see the finishes tomorrow. the crowd gatered behind all of them and was contimuously moving so you could see all the artists representations. they all are kicking ass right now.

that led us to the end of the night at the workshop were JP42, prostate sunrise, helium macaroni, phil holland, Intern, artkitty, groover, and many more all invaded his japanes sushi restaurant. it was good sushi today and we all left happy and full. intern even left a tip this time.

we all headed to the galleria to sketch in jp42's room with some group skech pages being passed around and a couple tribute pages being worked on as well. on one of the many trips to the lobby i set my sweat shirt (new one) down while we are outside and then went up stairs for 5 minutes or so before bringing the whole group down to the lobby. now i am eating kettle chips and cherry coke

Aw crap, I'm so pissed I missed the sketching party and it was only 3 floors below me! I ended up having the worst case of food poisoning in my entire life, thanks to Quizno's... don't EVER eat their meatball subs!

I can at least stand up now and the room has finally stopped spinning... so if there's another sketch-fest, I'll be there.

Just one pic for today - Lemen's awesome gouache demo at the end of the day:

I have some interest in the writing as well as visual art aspects, so I gotta say, Dylan Cole's lecture was absolutely great.

So, anyway, I run (run, you hear) down to the Mission and 1st St. bus stop to catch the 9:52 bus to Marin City, where I'm staying with family. And it never shows up. Wtf? #80, just never went by that stop at all, but showed up at the proper time in Marin (where my ride home was waiting). Do they just randomly cancel buses around here? I don't *think* there were any natural disasters (this time). . .

Hey dns2k,

Great diary entries! Im so glad somebody is doing this, it's the next best thing to being there.

Gyad Im so jealous! You got to meet Frank Cho? Im a big fan. But then Im a big fan of Justin Sweet, El Coro, Jon Foster and all the rest of the pros you got to mingle with.

Sorry to hear about your Mac probs...when I am writing something long-ish, I like to write it in the "word" program first then cut and paste it. That way you can keep saving it along the way, even edit it before posting it. Plus then you have a record of your diary entries!

Sounds like you are having a great time. I ALMOST went myself, but work issues kept me here in LA. Damnit! :upset:

I look forward to your next diary entry. And hopefully a truckload of pictures after the workshop ends!

Have fun! ~~~JadeDragon

jade-kool work in your thread man... very neat stuff. to bad you couldn't make it i know how things can come up at the last minute. i actually met frank a couple years ago at comic con with bob rhett a pinup artist. he is a kool guy and it was fun hearing his side of the industry.
