I like the general contours of this one for the most part, but need something to make the skin tones really work. Anything you all do to get that real life feel?

To get a real life look, just working on the skin is not enough. You need to work on the eyes, the lips and the hair as well.

color temperature changes.. if you're working from a photo, itll be nearly impossible to fake unless you got experience in paintign from life

You may gain some insight on realistic skin tones if you go thru Ron Lemen's two part tutorial:

You will also need to clearly establish your light source to develop realistic highlights and shadows.
