I started a project of copying every single page of an anatomy book. Occasionally I find a plate that's better in another book so I'll just copy that one instead. So far I'm about on page 110 of 180. The intent was to get better at anatomy, but I've also become much more skilled with a pen in the process. Here are a few pages, and some other sketchbook pages as well. Any comments, encouragement, or advice would be appreciated. I'm also thinking about going back to school... any recommendations? Or maybe there's another forum for that topic? I haven't posted in forever (no internet in my room), but I've been checking this place out a lot lately and I gotta say the work is amazing and it's my #1 spot on the web right now.

Regards,
Bonedog

Your studies look good - and you are a very diligent worker, it seems. Why don't you share the book titles with us? Anything you can recommend or give warning? Do you feel that it really helps to copy that much? Andover which period did you do those 110 pages?

Hey Jester,

When I study anatomy I'll have about 3 anatomy books open on my desk and another few on the floor. Every artist must find his own way forward, and for me doing all these studies has been very helpful. I'm learning discipline. I'm becoming more comfortable with a pen. I'm learning how to work quickly. I think it's taken me about 3 months to do 110 pages... I wanted to finish it all in 1 month but I guess it didn't happen ;)

Some of my favorite books:

Paul Richer - Artistic Anatomy - *****
I really like the plates. They're very clear and accurate.

Atlas of Human Anatomy - Stephen Peck - *****
Lots of good info in this one. Very solid.

Albinus on Anatomy - ***** - I bought this one to learn from the engravings more than to learn the anatomy. Whenever I look at these drawings I feel very humbled at the refinement and beauty of the drawings.

I also look at Bridgman, Barscay, Shephard, and a couple others.

Hope that helps... I'll post a few more soon.

Ha, Bonedog!

I like your figure drawings very much! As i saw these and read your name i remembered from where I knew your name/art...

You drawed/painted this nude on a beige background, which was convincing by good use of negative space, there were white brush strokes on a pencil drawing...right?

Damn..awesome work!
The last one looks really good..I love your style, and I really like how the shading gets tighter the closer it gets.
Very cool =)
What book is it that has all the bones?

I love these bonedog! I am also very much drawn to the pen...one book that is really good on pen technique is Guptil's Rendering in Pen and ink...I would buy it just for the illustrations shown in there but there is a lot more than just that. It's great:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0823045293/qid=1046379059/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/002-1068389-4298410?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

It's really inspiring for me to see how you utilize the pen for you life studies. I should do this as well...I am also drawing out of an anatomy book called "Anatomy for the Artist". I don't know if you feel the same way but I have so much more fun doing drawings in pen than I do in pencil.

These drawings are an inspiration to me. Thanks.

i have recently been giving the pen a chance and i am woundering if i need more that one pen size to get the effect you do bonedog ? Is there a brand of pens that dont bleed as much and are good for these type of drawings also?

amphex: thanks, glad you like 'em. one is an anatomy book by paul richer, and another is an anatomy book by stephen peck. i'm sure they're both easy to find on amazon.

Mindcandy: I own that book :) It's a good one for sure. Glad you liked the drawings.

Amador: I use pens called pilot hi-tec C or something. I get them in Japantown which is by my house but I don't know how easy they are to find elsewhere. They come in .3, .4, and .5 mm widths, but I think these were done almost entirely with .3. Anyway, my advice is to just experiment. The more you draw the more you'll know your likes and dislikes about particular pens. For large areas of black you'll need either india ink and a brush or a brush pen which is usually just as good and a lot cleaner. Ballpoint pens have the advantage that they go light or dark depending on how hard you press, but this makes them unsuitable for the more classical kind of pen&ink work.

Hope it helps. Hopefully I'll get some stuff to post soon.
