there's a visual development class at my school... which im not really in but the teacher lets me sit in:) the first assignment was development for a character, prop, and background for a sci-fi pinocchio. i chose stromboli and his caravan... allthough his caravan is now a mining ship.. and he deals with robot miners. anyways, this is the inside of the hanger in his ship. there's a few lines here and there that arent quite right as far as perspective, overall im pretty happy with it... and i had fun with the cartoony style. this is my first complete background. just wanted to post for critique. i was thinking about doing a few more light studies too...

Hey, this is really impressive. Nice concept you came up with for a sci-fi Pinocchio. I really like the nice clean linework. You are right, there are a few minor problems in the roof, but the rest looks very accurate. Yes, I would love to see more lighting studies, too. This one is very good but it is all highlight and no shadow. I would be curious to see what else you would do with it. But nice stuff here! :D

I agree with Turok. Why don't you add some shadows into that puppy. Y'know spruce it up!:)

Very well done! I think that the light study gives it tons of justice. I found that your line work was great, but it sort of seemed like things were floating. If it wasn't for the light study, I would have remained convinced that they were floating. Watch you line weights.

Good stuff!

i did this one late last night... my girlfriend was working late so i had to find something to do. still no shadows on this one except inside the light area, allthough the next one i will add some, and maybe to these. jar, when you say floating... what makes it seem that way? my style is usually more comic booky, so maybe the line weight you are talking about is the thicks i put around some of the objects... is this good or bad when it comes to concept art.. or neither?

nice details!
You gotta take care of the ellipses on the tube.
BTW Check out the comic book "Hardboiled" for inspiration, written by Miller and drawn by...?
That artist makes great detailed pictures, I doubt he's even human :d

Looks pretty cool. I love the idea too. I think stories that do a new twist on an old idea are intriguing (I loved Treasure Planet). I'd love to see some more rendered versions too.

Keep posting!

Hardboiled was drawn by Geoff Darrow.
He did a lot of concepts for the Matrix also.

I like the lighting on the last one..cool
(edit* I meant the second one)

I LOVE this pic. It's fantastic. The first with the light is great. I would love to see the finished piece with the lights and shadows.

This image is a far too perfect sketch not to complete with a sort of matte-painting sketch look!!! If you approached the painting of this in a way that Craig Mullins or Capt. Flushgarden might --- you'd have a GREAT environment illustration piece! And since you worked out the linework so well you have a great foundation to start with.

I'd love to see this as a completed painting!

yeah... Geoff Darrow, i remember browsing through the hard boiled book before, allthough the sex and violence in that comic was a little over the top for my tastes in comics. i might have to check it more of his work.
im working on one more version of this... but when you doing something that you know wont be as good as the previous versions its somewhat un-inspiring. i ran out of ideas for cool light sources. Mgc3003, thats a good idea... i might have to give that a shot, on this one or the next project. i'll post some more work of the actual stromboli character with the other light study... im headed for bed now. ... sooo. .. tir.. rreddd

Great work. Very nice and clean environment design and execution.

I was just looking at the last lighting test you made, and my only comment would be this. Since you are using the ceiling lights this time around, I would have made use of both sets of lights as opposed to only using the set furthest from the viewer. I think that the forground lights could have really added yet more atmosphere (so long as they are not too dominant). But thats just my opinion.

Great job though. Rock on.
