First of all I want to give more thank you's to Andrew and Jason for blowing my mind and putting me and a my peers in gear. the atmosphere around Ringling these days is BEAUTIFUL. You guys really left something in the air that's changing minds and attitudes.
Now on to the work.
What: Davey Havok of AFI aka A fire Inside.
Assignment: Portrait, capture an essence not just an image
Application: Photoshop 7 and a bit of Painter 7 for the background.
Things I am quite aware of but not totally happy with but for one reason or another can not totally go in and fix with out essentially starting over:
1. the soft edges: I've been told this is a photoshop thing. I, like many, have been working in Photoshop for years and have not made the jump to Painter. I have also been told that it is MUCH easier to get a harder, less "digital" look with Painter then it is with Photoshop. Having messed w/ Painter very little I believe I can agree. Unfortunately I'm typing this on the very computer i created this piece with. A Pentim II 233mhz NOTEBOOOK w/ 96 meg of ram and a 4 gig hard drive...need I say more? Gateway has assured me that the new 512 meg 1.7 ghz Notebook w/ 30 gig of space will arrive around Tuesday so this excuse should not come up in the future.
2. the face is too elongated...Agreed. should have paid more attention to that drawing.
3. face is too flat...sorta agree. the man paints his face white and wears make up. I wanted you to recognize him in the dark while still getting that reflective light. If you disagree I will not argue.
4. he should look more angry...sorta agree. but again didn't want to lose his face under the angry wrinkles.
that being said (sorry for the long wind. I've had this critiqued, cropped and reworked by the result of my class and 4 professors, I've had a lot of input because I sent this piece to the band in hopes for work from them) I present this to you all because I feel you are all the best artist I've come in relative contact to. I want to take full advantage of this opportunity. Thank you
