I am painting this big vectorish thing on my bedroom wall. I am using Latex paint and I tried taping it, and that gives my a dirty edge, with little paint chips that appear underneath. SO, my art teacher suggested doing it free hand with a flat brush. But, when I do that, I end up getting a really thick paint edge as the paint get's squished to the sides. How do I do it so that I don't get this edge?

Try painter's caulk. Tape off your area and drag a SMALL bead across the seam, which you smooth out with your fingers. That will seal the tape and you can paint a nice crisp line. If you find that the caulk gums up, use a razor to help you cut the tape off. Personally, I wait until the caulk is dry before I paint (about 2 hrs), then remove the tape while the paint is still wet.
Good luck.
P.S. The caulk will cost you about $1 and the caulkers gun about $3.
