Some images have been removed for bandwidth reasons. Look at the bottom of this thread for newer sketches!
Well, I haven't posted in so long that my first sketchbook was deleted, so I decided to start a new one (I couldn't post because my computer was in the shop for 2 months nearly :$ ) Anyways, here's some sketches I've done recently.

Hey man keep going! All you need is the dedication and you can succeed! When you're feeling uninspired just draw anything, whether it be something in your room or drawing from photo or anything. Just draw draw draw, in no time you'll be drawing like a pro, besides, the stuff I see here is already an indication you're well on your way!

Dave

Hey, Dan! Welcome back!
The first thing I noticed in this sketch is that the neck on the left figure is too long and that the right side of the rib cage seems to curve in a little to much. Not 100% on the rib cage, but it looks a little funny. The figure to the right looks excellent though.
Good job, and welcome back!

there are some easy tips on how to learn or how to understand foreshortening.. before u will be able to draw a foreshortened body.. u need some training.. i did that 2.. with drawing cubes * in my first 3 month of "drawing start " i only drew cubes.. because i had to understand this :D its good training*.. in our couch.. u have foreshortening too.. in ur chair too.. in evryline u draw.. there is foreshortening ... train ur eye to reveal the foreshortened truth :D
in my sketchbook is a Tutorial link .. ask me if u cant find it ;)
u can also pm or request help in my sketchbook :)

Been a while since my last visit!
Really good figures, man! Keep working on those, you've chosen some really great poses to learn from. Anatomy and life drawing will take you a long way!

Hi Dan,
This is my first time looking at you sketchbook. I have to say that I'm really impressed with the progress you have made on your figures from the start of the thread to the last post. You seem to have improved your sense or proportion a lot. Also, you have a good eye for catching the important details that give the pose life, which is something I continually struggle with. Also, your hands are really inspiring. I am going to have to start doing a lot more hand studies like these.
Keep it up!

This week is Critique Week... and then you post.
How can you post when there's nothing to critizise on the whole sketchbook? You shouldn't have posted, so I would not have to give you many words of great admiration about your skill (which is amazing, and even more so in a 16 year old)!
You shouldn't have posted! The moderators will be pissed off! :nohope:

Dan,
The redone study of the woman turn out much better than the first try. You are able to capture the movement of the figure, even the twisting torso, well!
I wanted to suggest some things you could try and do to further your drawings as a whole, not so much in regards to anatomy, etc. You seem to tend to outline the whole figure (a trap I commonly fall into). This tends to flatten the image to the page, fighing the good work you have done to portray the volume of the forms. You might want to consider being more careful with this outside contour, letting it open up and breathe in some place, making it harder in other places(flexing muscles, weight bearing points). This Raphael drawing (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/mentler/raphael030605.jpg) illustrates what I am talking about.
Keep up the good work!

Hey. Nice studies. I see that you like copying Loomis. Plan to do so myself hehe. It's important tha you do not only copy, but put effort into developing your own methods, both in construction and anatomy. When you figure out your own ways, you will absorb things easier. The more you try to absorb, the more you learn.
Keep it up. Nice to see such the hard work from a boy at your age!

Study for delineation, nothing special... basically I'm trying to see how much volume I can convey with line alone.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/dan1989/delineation.gif
Dan.v.D.
March 27th, 2005, 02:50 AM
you could convey a lot more volume and weight and stuff if you use lineweight to help you with it. look at loomis for instance and how his lines are thicker in shadow and thinner or even disappear where light is.
another option is to make the lines thicker the closer they are to the viewer or thinner ones when drawing organic things to suggest tension. thereīs a lot you can do with lineweight so you better start to develop a feeling for it.
thicker lines at the bottom of your cup would help to indicate the weight of that object.
Redleg
March 27th, 2005, 08:28 AM
Muchos respectos on the anatomy, you've been working hard. Make sure you draw from your imagination as well. Try taking some of the elements that you have been studying from animals and textures in nature and combining them with the human form instead of starting from a place where it looks like you have just copied a pokemon or cartoon. BE DARING! Fantasy and science fiction are about pushing the limits of reality into new places never before experienced by the psyche. Rather than replicating life life, grow your own robot children or tell me about your worst nightmare through your sketch book and the tallent you have.
Helpfull?
Big-Dave
March 27th, 2005, 03:49 PM
I think I'd have to go with Dan.v.D on the volume aspect. Straight even lines don't define volume very well. Try and vary the weights a bit more. Oh, and yes, Goache is hard :P Try working with it in very thin washes over a line drawing. I know a tendancy I have is to work to thick then the picture just doesn't look right
Overall you seem to be making a big improvement though, try and keep it up :) (and dont worry about the cringe worthy old pictures, my oldies are probably worse)
Dan1989
March 27th, 2005, 04:17 PM
Dan.v.D.:I see what you mean about the line variation, I was trying to do that but I guess I should pay more attention to that aspect instead of the value of the lines so much. Thanks, very helpful comment!
Redleg:Another helpful comment, thanks you for the suggestions, I will definitely try to apply them.
Big-Dave:Yes, I am about to paint another gouache painting, and when I was doing it I realised what you just said, gouache IS hard! I think I might try oil painting, it just seems more suited to what I want to go for.
Ok, onto the stuff. Here is a painting of a remote control done in gouache, it didn't come out at all like I hoped for, but I learned a little while doing it I guess.

Hey, you have some really nice stuff in your sketchbook and you are really mastering those hands, keep at it, I'd like to see you develop your own method for drawing the human form from imagination, right now it seems to me that you are copying loomis' finished drawings very accurately but you should practice building your own poses, either with stick figures, boxes, cillinders, a simplified skeleton or anything else that suits you until you develop your own personal style to draw the form.
I figure you are about three months ahead of where I am (talent and practice-wise) so Keep it up or I'll catch up

Wow man, you've got some great stuff going on here!! I love all the hands and gestures, and you seem to be especially good at drawing animals. Like redleg said, you should try to incorporate some of your stuff into your drawings from imagination, it looks like you've got a pretty good foundation to do that, especially with how well you draw animals. The only thing I don't like in here is the lined paper! ;) Keep it up, draw every day, the only excuse is if your arms are cut off or you're barfing or something. :P

I have to say, good progression, but each update it's almost the same hand. Try making different sized hands. Fat hands, baby hands, female hands, beaten hand, thumbless hands, etc.
Also, maybe try moving on to different areas also, faces, legs, feet, etc.
Good progress though.

Well I didn't draw as much as I should have today, but I actually had fun drawing! Something I really need to do more often. First of all, one thing I noticed is that you can draw BOOBIES very well! :D
Great job on that... You're studies are really paying off, and I think after each study you do you're lines become a little more confident. That banana speedpaint is a success, also. One thing that i think could hurt you in the long run is the lack of creative sketches. You should be doing those as well as studies so you don't end up forgetting all those great ideas that spawn in your head as you watch an episode of your favorite action show. Also, when studying from life, try to make your lines either follow the form or angle towards the direction the light is going. Keep up the dedication.

Ummm.. the only thing I got is to smack you upside the head for cutting off one of your pictures at a joint. I do it only because I simply run out of room, but it's very bad picture-wise to cut it off at a joint, especially at the wrists or ankles.

When you do anatomy studies, try to spin them around in your mind, for example if you draw the side, the front and the back of an arm, try to do so you can spin around it in your mind, that will help with imagination stuff etc.

Hey, you're doing wonderfully with the hands and the feet and the composition!
Remember that females dont tend to have large ribs (chests?) so unless the woman is small (think A-B cup size) you won't likely be seeing large amounts of chest to the underside of the forearms that you do in males, especially if she's twisting.
Dan1989
May 12th, 2005, 11:59 PM
Spork:Thanks. I know what it's like to struggle, too. As for your Q about the hands, the best way to improve draw anything is to get a firm grasp on art fundamentals like shape, gesture, pestrpective, volume, etc., you have to learn how to see correctly. I will check out your sketchbook when I get the time

I really like your studies - those last few hands are excellent! About the better organized value system thing - I have that problem as well. My main thing with it is that I can't associate what value a colour would be unless there is a direct shade. I found some theory against that though - Ron Lemen (Fredflickstone) has a colour theory tutorial up in the Life Drawing Section that corresponds colours to value. When I read that it seemed obvious. I dunno - if this is something you're having a problem with like me, then it might be good to check it out. Anyway, I talk too much. :bashful:

I couldn't find that picture in my Bridgeman's Drawing from Life, granted, it's a pretty big book. The right leg is spot on with anatomy - heads compared to lenght and all. And since you didn't finish it completely... I still think it's going the right way though.
If you could tell me what page they're from, I could check if you'd like.
Edit:I backed up a bit and read you didn't want to take your still life further, though it's looking good. I'm going to say you need to do it - I'm the same way with that cow drawing, but I'm going to finish it up. It teaches some dedication, preservation - plus, the stuff learned from a finished piece is much more than that of just a sketch. So go for it man :) (I'm not trying to sound like a parent, but I suppose I am :P)

I think you got your studies down, like Darkarts mentioned, it might be time to mix in rendering practice.. Let's see how realistic you can make a drawing if you spend a few hours on it.. on my list of things to do this week is a 3hr long drawing from life..

Dan, I've got a question, how big do you normally draw? It seems like you draw A4, but I'm not certain. It's just something I'm wondering about in regards to my own 'work...'
Dan1989
May 16th, 2005, 12:26 PM
Yeah I know, I do need to do more finished renderings. I will try to do more of those, but I'm still going to do alot of studies =P I'm not satisfied with them enough yet.
Darkarts: As for your question, I have no idea what A4 means (I should so know all these terms by now >_< ) But ok, like the next page I am about to post is done on 8x10 copy paper, I should probably draw bigger....
Also, sorry I couldn't post yesterday, I was gone to Houston for a baseball game... for now here are some hands ( 8 x 10 inches, just incase darkarts is wondering)

Nah, I'm not saying you should draw bigger, I was just wondering. And A4 is a normal sheet of paper you would use to print out an essay, if you were wondering.

Hey dan, I was thinking about some stuff, since you say you're not challenging yourself enough. These are all on my list as well:
-Do anatomy from the mind. It doesn't matter how good you are with real anatomy, if you can't do it from the mind, then you can never do all the crazy stuff the pro's dish out without checking back every minute. There's a cool thread about it in the life drawing section.
- Industrial Design. Cars, for example: don't do shading and rendering, but just do the lines. Cars have some complicated curves and spaces that will certainly be challenging. Other industrial stuff as well.
-Life drawing. Anything that will help a lot - perspective in streets, foilage, and humans around you, WITH clothes. Build up a library of every day stuff that you can use to make some mind blowing artwork.
-Self-portraits.
-Barque drawings (pretty sure I spelled that wrong)
- Colour! I haven't seen you do that yet, and I'm sure you'll pick it up easily. :)
- A different medium - there's a whole new world to explore. Inking, markers, heck, if you don't want to steer to much away from the pencil, try charcoal.
Hope that gave you some ideas. :)

Dan, I think I know what you mean. I've been studying Loomis this week and I'm already starting to get restless. Just feels like I'm tracing the whole time. I think darkarts has the right ideas. I myself am going to try and do my own stuff (drawing from memory) inbetween my book studies. I'm bookmarking you're book :) I think I can learn alot from you. Keep up your studies, they're looking awesome. I especially like your life stuff.

Just want to say thank you all for the advice!
Spork: The loomis books can be found at http://www.saveloomis.org , I just downloaded Creative Illustration today and plan to print it soon, I'd recommend you start with "Fun With A Pencil" or "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth"
Adahl: Sorry, a little hard to figure out exactly what you mean, but George Bridgman was a figure artist that published alot of books in the early 20th century, if you're wondering, I recommend his books.
Darkarts: Thanks, alot of useful suggestions, I will try as many as I can. I was thinking about industrial design today, imagining my modem to be a giant building (nerdy ^_^), I've also wanted to do some SP's for awhile, I'll have to get around to doing that, I have no excuses =P
Tokidokizenzen: Thanks, yeah the loomis stuff can get boring if you do it too much, but I guess it pays off in the long run.

My suggestion would be to do some anatomy "studies" from your memory.

Yeah I had fun drawing the alien =P I need to draw more stuff like that.
I decided to give gouache painting another go, I figure I need to start out with greyscale until I get comfortable with the medium, color always leads me to frustration >_< Also, you guys are too soft on me, give me some really hard crits, I can handle them.
All gouache except the little sketch of the speaker in the middle. The painting of the speaker has wonky construction.

Well, since you're climbing that staircase three steps at a time, it's hard to give you some good critique, as I can't spot anything wrong with them. Instead, you'll have to settle for my praise once again as I love your gouache studies. They show once again you've got a great understanding of form. It might have wonky construction as you put it, but to me, it looks good. :P Keep on going man! :confident

Dan, do you sleep? Seriously... Go get some. You can't spend every single night improving, you know. :dur:
About the hand - I dunno how you worked on that one, but it almost seems like you took near-black dark grey as a base colour? I don't know much about painting, but I think it would be better if you block the tones in lightly at first... i.e, the supposed blacks are just a little darker grey than the light greys, etc, instead of going full in. Again, I don't know jack about painting, but it might help a little... Otherwise refer to Ron Lemen, he knows what to do :P
Oh, and check out the life painting thread in the Life Drawing forum - the work there is enough to make you faint, but maybe there's some good advice to be found there.
Edit: Just checked back on the first page, and looked through the entire book. Astoudning improvement = inspiration. Thanks! ;)

Blankslatejoe: Yeah you're probably right... I'm so wishy washy and give up on new things too easily.
I don't have much from today, I just feel like I'm trying to learn too many things at one time... I'm doing figure drawing, painting, hands, trying to learn values, trying to draw from imagination.... I think it's bogging my mind down....
hard to tell this is a towel... I think I focused on the value differences too much and paid no attention to the local tone of the object
http://img243.echo.cx/img243/5901/stuff316ce.gif
these were supposed to be tonal studies, but they cam out all grainy, I'm wondering if I should be some better paper so I will have smoother tones?

Man, I definitely did not intend for you to give up on painting through my comment. Get that brush and get back there! :P
I can see it's a towel, it's quite good, just not as polished as your other drawings. And your mind being boggled is good, what do you think is going to happen when you become a professional artist? In fact, I'm going to encourage you to look at different things at least once a week. For example, I did guns last week, and might do armor when I have time. Building up a library of mental reference seems just as important to me as technique.
Anyway, about the graininess: I know what you mean. I've got a very bad sketchbook that has uneven grain in it - I can't shade in it, which is why I think it really hurt me. That's one of the reasons why I turned to my A3 Sketchbook, because it had far less grain. Try it, I think you'll like it.

I do need to draw different subjects like you said, that suggestion is correct.

Awsome fundamentals..
.You are obviously right handed,,,I just wonder which one is more tired,,,holding up your left takes energy, too I bet.
I read you say you wanted to challenge yourself more (it was way up there in the thread)
I would reccomend (reccomend, that is) a couple of things...
You are concentrating on drawing so much from observation ( reff and life) and memory,,,,you might not of thought of other ways to refine your skills..
One thing I do to remind myself how shitty my drawings look unless I bite my tounge and concentrate like a gradeschooler,,,is draw blind observation drawings...You know, like blind contour drawings,,, no looking except to set and reset your pen tip.... I think it helps your hand-eye more than a lot of other stuff,,,,,,,The pitiful mutant people you draw that way are fun to look at too.
I say this alot, but try to pull the shadows into the outline and forms more,,,,it adds a lot of dimension when you make the reflected light more prevelent than it really is....I mean leaving light between the outline and the core shadow.
move your left hand a little to the right and you will see a whole room of perspectivally place objects and lightscapes,,,,guache is good for doing paintings of those kind of things.
The illustration activity from the sketch forum looks really neat,, If you periodically revisit more styilized and lighthearted subject matter and ways of rendering, you will see the stuff you learned in your academic attempts popping up everywhere,,,,put some time aside for color and imagination.
Hold some stuff in your hand when you are drawing it...
hope it helps some, keep on mercilessly whipping the horse, it all looks good.
Bye!

Wow, you're doing a lot of stuff... I feel guilty now.
However, you look like you're doing the same thing with your anatomy studies. Break it up a bit, grab a book that has nudes doing natural things so that you get an idea of what happens when they get out of the tub. Not everyone looks like they're trying to contort all the muscles in their body.
However, with that crit, what you are doing looks fantastic.
