View Full Version : Rant About Robot Art?

I was in a gallery and there was this cute little robot sculpture called Mindless Technology by David Reekie (http://freespace.virgin.net/david.reekie/Current%20Available%20Work.html). Glass, looked like something animated by Pixar. But, $21,800. My eyes practically fell out of my head. Is this art or just something that should have been made out of playdough? It’s not even like it was a real robot, just a cartoonish sculpture of a robot. Is it me or have we lost our way trying to blend art with technology?

Welp, it's worth however much somebody is willing to pay for them.
Certainly not the artist's fault that some people want to throw their money away.

Never heard of the guy. But if he is popular, then I guess his price is legit. BTW, what do you mean by "blending technology with art" ???

It might not what I would pay for that art but then I'm sure somebody out there wouldn't pay for what I consider worthwhile either. Everyone's got their opinions and if the guy can make 20K on those pieces, more power to them! Make a fortune with it if you can!
It's almost like grousing about ball players making millions upon millions to play a game for only part of the year... and yet we attend their games, buy their jerseys, and watch them on TV.
It's not any more legitimate or less. It just IS.

I agree. If I’m going to pay that kind of cash for a robot sculpture, it’d better be a hot looking female robot done with late art deco chrome curves. I want a robot that works, not a sculpture of a children’s toy.
How about a vacuum robot like the roomba? I consider a machine that takes care of my vacuuming the perfect blend of art meeting technology. Let’s have more stuff like that.

I'm with Groover on this....if someone wants to stash money in my wallet so be it! But I don't do 30 day money back guarantees. :bashful:

It's definitely crazy, but isn't this what we all hope to come up with? Something that we can (from the looks of it) pretty easily recreate and sell for ridiculous amounts of money? I mean, I am not impressed by those sculptures, and I would rather create something more personally meaningful. But if I could come up with something simple like that to make my fortune, and do what I really want to do as well, that would be the perfect situation.

That better be a magical robot sculpture that gives me all the women and drugs in the world. And a few brownies. If not I'm slappin some people.
And... if he's makin money off those things.. at least he could afford a better website than that.

Ha! Those are adorable. Robots are cool. Not worth $ 28 000, but what're you gonna do?
