He used more then one kind of pencil, I can't tell you exactly what ones some of the more experienced artist will have to tell you that.

Hi,
It doesn't really matter what kind of pencil u use to draw something like that, seriously! He propably did it with a normal pencil or maybe, judging by the color, a conté pencil or something like that.
The hardness ( if the scanned image is correct ) would be B or 2B i guess.
Graphite is the term used for the material used for pencils. ( I think that's what u mean by ' graphite pen' ? )
As for the drawing, U could draw that with just one pencil, no doubt about that. U just have to build up your darks, that's it. Start with very soft gentle lines and gradually press harder while u render the drawing.

Materials are not 'that' important , especially if you're a beginner. An artist however get's attached to certain brands or certain materials he likes best when he evolves as an artist. Just try out as much as possible and you'll soon find out what works best for you.
Good luck

hmm...it looks like charcoal pencil, the darks are really black. But a 4B graphite pencil will get the same effect, also the paper is tone brown (maybe Canson Mi-tentes (sp?))

...it's probably just pencil though.
