one more for "the uninvited" book.
your basic guns a blazing scene, but decided to get closer for composition and facial expression.

oh yea first reply,
I really like the contrast in this one Jon, It has a tactile quality that I can almost touch. it feels almost like a sculpture

Amazing work Jon, love the texture, composition and what Android said.
one little crit: the perspective on the border of his googles is off. The vertical of the circle should be a little thinner than the horizontal.
Love your work Jon, thanks for showing !

Look at that texture...look at it. Just plain amazing! I wish I could see what he's shooting at! :( You surprise me evertime Jon. Lately it seems like you're pumping these babies out really fast. About 1 or 2 a week right?

I was impressed by your choice to crop tight around your subjects face, personally I feel that it tells every thing that it needs to say and leaves just enought out for me to consider and contemplate on. An excellent use of restraint.
Also just a comment your work reminds me of a painting by Christopher Moeller. Not many people know of him (shadow empires series_ highly recomended) I say this because of the texture u use around your subjects lips. Very powerful, thanks for posting.

Foster this is no doubt my favorite piece of yours. One tiny crit though, You have some sort of blurred out line around the figure up against the white, it's a bit too bold as an outline, maybe taking away from it in some areas or adding some more blur in the white area...like maybe at the top?

The reflective light off those goggles is what does it for me. Makes me feel like i'm standing there looking at this guy for real. Beautiful...

Wowzers. I really like the equivocal space; it's both flat and totally un-flat.

hey thanks!
well i fixed the lens (i hope), thank you kaini! i always have trouble with ellipses.
Davi, i did what you said about the edge and i must say that i like your suggestion. cool beans my friend!
len, thank you and i do know christopher moeller?s work. i know chris and perhaps i should ask him to join this forum. not sure he will have time (i don't but it is addicting). but it would be fun to read chris's thoughts.
iwasink, yea, it seems that way. i just need to be sure that the quality does not go down.
hey android, always great to hear from you. thanks!
i flipped it for a fresh look.

Wow - you've really captured a moment in time. Freeze framed it. :)
I have no idea how you do it. Well, ok, I have an idea, but...
Thanks for being an inspration.
Crits?
Well - I feel perhaps that the middle piece of the goggles(between the two glasses) seem like it is carving it's way into his skin - a bit too close.
But then again - maybe it is. :)
Great, great work.

First, I really like this illustration. That being said, OH WOW YOU KNOW CHRISTOPHER MOLLER!!!!! I love that guy, ever since "Shadow empires" I've been dying to know more about him. Does he have a web sight. I'm sorry I'm filling your thread up with this but I didn't think anyone new of his work, (thats sort of insulting, sorry) Wow.
Ps. If it matters, Shadow Empires influenced me on a very profound level. I would love to get him on conceptart.org so I can thank him. Agian, I apologize for the space I'm taking on your thread

Very powerful image foster.
Couple suggestions:
I'm bothered a bit by the outline around the face. It's almost looks like his head is laying on a pillow. The arm blends better to the background, in my opinion. Another spot that pops out too much is the top of the nose in relation to the mask. I think if the mask area there was lighter, maybe showing a seam highlight it would sit better on the face. Only slight suggestions here to consider. Great drawing in any case!

I love the textures of this. Seems like I'm never tired of looking at it over and over agian. Each time something interesting will capture my eyes attention. Initially I thought it was a crop from a bigger piece like you would when you post but nevertheless its still a good crop. Lets my mind wonder what is happening outside the canvas.

Dude...jon this is flipped out. I love the shells you've got flying into our faces and the white insignia on the arm. Dang...this one rocks. Just so you know...the jealousy of your art keeps me going. I keep seeing this stuff and I want to paint like that so I keep going and push even harder.
One crit...this might be reduced to more of a stylistic thing because it doesn't really bother me or look "wrong" to me. But the first bolt (the one closest to the front of his face) and also the shape of the frontal part of the skull seem skewed a tad. It's more the angle of the first bolt I think...I'm not getting an instant feel of roundness of the head. Like I said this is more of a stylistic thing I think but just wanted to bring it up in case you hadn't noticed it. Awesome awesome awesome awesome stuff man.
:hothead: :mumble: :moon: :bars: :fight: :ranting:
Can you feel my jealousy?

thanks again to all for their comments and help.
davi you are too funny! i would be wasting my time posting here if i did not listen to you and the others.
landmate, your are right the perspective is probably off. this is where i have many a problem. to work it out correctly i would need to build it in real life (hey maybe i will just do that)! but if you wanted to do a paintover and show me what you think will help i would be much obliged.
the paintover goes for anyone who has the time or inclination.
john p. thanks and i will push it around some more.
littlejohn, i just missed you on my last post. thanks for the kind words.
len, no problem, i am a big christopher moeller fan as well. for anyone is interested check out his site. i guarantee that you will like it!
http://users.adelphia.net/~moellerc/
loga4, thanks but sorry, that is all there is. i'm such a tease.
lono, i always puff with pride when you like a piece.
dbclemons, thanks i appreciate what you are saying. it is one of those things where the things that you find unappealing are the things that i like. i am fascinated with flat space. I like to see if it can function as space and as graphic element at once. I am not always as concerned with whether something looks real as to whether it has the energy and character that I want to get across. Littlejohn?s statement about the space made me very happy, as it is one of those intangibles that you hope you accomplished.
hoodz, thanks! i hope i have not been torturing too many with file size. i am spoiled with my cable hook up.
shawnye, that?s one of the best compliments you can get as an artist. i'm glad you find you linger in the piece instead of going in and coming out right away. it is one of those paradoxes where if you give less to the viewer, the more they see and participate. i find when a painting is to fully realized in detail and too expansive in scene that i get bored faster and want to move on. it was all handed to me on a plate. i did not have to work for it so thus i have little attachment to it.
cool beans, now off to paint the cover for the book!

Hey landmate could you explain a little more about the lines you put in. I don't understand what some of them are for...thanks.
davi
February 13th, 2003, 08:53 AM
i can mindcandyman.
in the blue picture. it shows the edges of the bolts, how foster did them.
in the second picture it's showing the planes of the head. the little box is what should be a bolt. He's compairing where the bolt should be with where it is now basicly.
most of the lines are unneeded but show the planes.

Mr. Foster you never cease to amaze me. I look forward to openeing up conceptart.org and seeing your stuff on the forum. I can smell the gun powder, sweat, leather, and stale beer in this one. Brings me back to my old Deutsche, heavy metal pub crawling days. thanx.
landmate, those are some insane perspective notes there, nice eye for detail.
Mr. Foster, I can't wait to see your repaired version, your humbleness is legendary.
