Hey dude!

Off the top of my head i'd say lose the "hairy line" thing. A nice strong decided line does wonders and helps the whole piece flow better. And you do reference work, which I haven't done in ages (and i need to, too...) which is always very good.

Keep it up!

Hey thanks for the reply man. Anyways, what do you mean by the 'hairy line thing'? Do you mean work for stronger lines instead of light sketchy ones?

You hands are looking better...
Your eyes and noses suffer from classic beginnerisms...

those lines/shadings you keep wanting to draw in from the inside corner of the eyes to the tip of the nose... pretend they don't exist. catch yourself drawing them, and then dont. its one of those 'drawing what you know and not what you see' things.

with the eyes:
pay attention to the size of the iris. you're drawing them HUGE!
on the eyelids, in life your top eyelid casts much stronger shadows than the bottom, also casts shadow right on the white of the eye. your eyes appear like cutouts because of the evenly dark line all the way around.

when you're doing those small head studies, try this: leave out the bottom eyelid altogether. don't even draw it. it won't look funny, i promise. Don't believe me, check out the some of the other sketchbook threads and their smaller head sketches: the eye is very expressfully but very simply marked mostly by just a line for the upper lid and the iris.

Hey you have a great start going there. My best advice would just be to draw from reference and life as much as possible! When ever you can, just draw, its amazing the results that you can see. Do muscle and bone studies and pose studies and just draw! You're well on your way, keep it up!

@Ryan - thanks for the crits man. You're right, my eyes and noses look retarded and sometimes even my lips. But i'mm working on it; i'll especially work on the eyes thing. Thanks again!

@Dave - you're absolutely right. I've seen some good results this year after a couple of weeks just by drawing from life. Can't stop now!

I'm currently going through Drawing From The Right Side of The Brain and i don't know how to make that cardboard thing with the thread. Well I kind of do but in one of the assignments I have to have a clear sheet of paper stuck on it and have to place the board on my hand and draw it. Just wanted to ask if I could use overhead sheets for the clear sheet.

Already you have shown progression, even from your first post. It's obviouse to me you have the ability to learn and get better at drawing, and I've got some suggestions for you. As a fellow artist trying to progress, i find that studying anatomy books and drawing from them is VERY helpful in the learning process (especially when trying to draw without a reference). Already I see you are doing this with your drawings of the skeleton. You should definately purchase a book on anatomy and study often (if you haven't done so already.) Your rendering is looking good so far, but of course their is always room for improvement there as well. I suggest you take a look at MetalWind's sketchbook. He is one of the best examples at someone who makes it a priority to constantly study anatomy in his sketchbook. Just draw constantly and you will progress very quickly. :confident

Thanks for the suggestions Abra. Really appreciate you coming in and taking a peek. About the anatomy books, I have two. Dynamic Figure Drawing from Mr. Hogarth and Anatomy for The Artist by Tom Flint. My next step is using the books; at this stage I am mainly looking at reference pics of poses and trying to convert them into basic shapes. And yes I absolutely agree, an artist should never stop drawing. ;)

You've got the right idea, man! Keep it up! Get yourself some anatomy books and learn a bit about proportion. Keep up those studies and work from life as often as you can! You'll be where you want to be in no time at all!

Thanks for the looks Zebz. I just got Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Hale and Terrence Coyle. Amazing book;i've read 3 pages so far and i've learned so much it's not even funny. Definately worth it. Sorry no post today, had to study for Math. Ughh. Anyways. expect an update tommorow for sure.

Comments and crits needed.

okiii dokiiii :dur:

ur approach .. is really good .. .. i dunno how it seems to u but... !

u should practice perspective drawing some more ... its the only fundamental u need to experience drawing

u already subdevided bodys into simple geometrie - which is a really good task to understand and learn how to draw body movement

::: subdevide other bodys in simple geometrie 2 -> cubes and cylinders - add vanishing points to indicate distance - u allready made some pics with that ... practice more .. its a really good exercise * iam doing that since ... 4 month ..its worth it !!!! *

most of the parcels can be transtaled into easy gemetrie - chest head hands fingers ... cubes arms legs throat cylinders..
houses cars trucks technical stuff.. ur pc monitor ur keyboard... just cubes

draw and rotate cubes ... rotating cubes gives a good feeling for foreshorteting ..maybe cube drawing sounds fukin boring but its an awesome exercise.. and its really hard to practice that with more complex geometrie like cars trucks or faces... the base still is a cube .. all information about 3dness and volume are in there.. a face and car and trucks are in fact just more complex cubes...u can draw a face which is setup with .. 20 cubes and u can draw a super realistic face which has.. maybe 2500 cubes..

subdeviding a face coast some time but.. if u do that.. u get absolute awareness of its surface.. u could draw it in full 3dness... 12900 variations ^^ .. iam trying to understand face surface.. since 4 month.. its hard but .. worth it again ! gives me a good pure feeling about my object my surface and its behaviour when i rotate it + perspectiv + vanishing point

depenjding on the cubes rotaten the shapes which setupr ur face and eys and lips.. change because i see them from diffrent viewpoint now .. - u made that with these eyes u draw - take a lil box and rotate it in ront of ur eye..and move it in front of ur eye ..from left to right and so on... keep ur eyes looking straight in front of u - moving ur eyes will change the viewpoint* then draw that cube in diffrent rotation states...

... practice the drawing fundamentals*** and u will feel urself imrpoving evry single day :)

*** fundamentals : symmetrie!!! perspective which includes vanishing point !! and foreshortening! ... practice that.. and in some years u just can draw evrything almost perfectly

keep it up !

*u can browse my latest posts i made.. i postet lotsa stuff about that *see above* in there .. maybe this helps u too

really g00000d chandy :D

i see.. u have that dynamic anatomy drawing book from burne hogarth ?! :D

if so.. there is a part for head too..of no.. thers a book about portrait drawing available at amazon * theres also another hogarth book which is a collection of all his books it bringt together : body anatomy + hand + portrait + bit cloth and folds and bit shadow shading* he adopts the parts about light shadow and portrait into seperat books... try get on of these

:: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0823015521/qid=1104588710/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/104-1394979-5417567?v=glance&s=books

i can give u some tips n tricks on how i proceed and how i learned head shape drawing/understanding

another thing is..evry line u draw is alligned in 3d space.. what u dont see is the foreshortetning-amount of these lines..
u can draw a short line which is alligned into space.. u dont see the lines distance.. on ur paper its short..maybe ____

but in fact.. depending on what that line represents.. it can be a part of something that is 1000meters high or long.. so that line i drew.. is almost foreshortened .. when u change ur viewpoinr or rotate the object that line becomes longer *rotate ur pencil in front of ur eye

from front u see something like -> O <- *zoomed* ^^
and from side u see something like ----- or =======
its like a cylinder
now rotate ... from ------- full lenght u get --- in 45° degree rotate untill u have full rotate and look at the front again...

between side and front view which represent 0° and 90° orientation.. u have 88 other degree orientations u can draw.. *full 3D is 360^360 = 129000 orientations when rotating.. some parts get covered by some other parts * nose and mouth volume are tricky*

i just took me the bottom top side and profile view to get a rid of the face shape.. then i made studies from front and profile view.. and i rotate the shape.. that it looks like the head is looking up or down.. this gives a better shape controle.. its the shape u draw.. but u rotate it over ur papers surface.. u can rotate ur paper or ur head.. *try that with cubes first*

to understand body parts.. u have to look at them from at least 3 views *front profile top* .. keep in mind that there is a third dimension

this is most tricky part :> because i cant actually DRAW 3D.. i only can SEE it 3D.. the piece stays 2d..doenst matter what i draw

i can draw a line with corners.. i can see that line as a 2d shape.. or i can see how its aligned into 3d space * I decide how much each line is foreshortened* !!!!

:: subdevide ur stuff into cubes * fingers are 3 cubes* ur arms = cylinders ..l egs 2 ..chest.. rip cage a cube head .. a cube ... and so on..
:: study body parts volumes
:: draw !simplified! bodys made out of cylinders and cubes
::: add some more detailed to cubical body setup -
:: subdevided body parts can become more complex cubes
keep it !

draw some varies of these cubes.. long ones wide .. flat... something like that

try draw cubes along ur body pard dimensions... i mean.. draw a cube which is similar to lower arm and upper arm lenght... and rip cage and stuff like that * helps u chekking proportions*

keep it uup >,.<

Good head study, dude! Looks better than the previous ones... and do you know what that means??

VISIBLE IMPROVEMENT! Good job, man!

Hey, since you're doing weaponry and armor, here's a cool idea for you. Maybe you'll like it... Do like a figure study of the human body, then draw the same figure next to it, but add pieces of armor, draw another body, add more, and eventually you've got an anatomically correct, proportional, ass kicking knight! I dunno if that'll float your boat, but I think it's cool!

Either way, keep drawing and don't let the school bring you down! Try and use it as inspiration, you'll figure it out!

yaaaaa :D cubes cubes cubes :D

damn good start :D it will get easier each time u start drawing one cube
:>

try to understand the lines for faces and cubes as 3dimensional parts...
when u see the nose wing from side... i can exactly set one point on that line to track wehre that point lies when us ee nose wing from front...
sometimes u dont have flats and ur surface is smooth like a sphere part.. its tricky then but... try to connect diffrent views to understand what happens when u rotate complex shapes

its similar : get a cube... the cube has several flats ..quads.. take one and brake it .. just draw only 3 lines... l_l <- like this or rotate it that the open part is facing left or right... then rotate this one
when u rotate this l_l ..depending on the rotation axis... u get other foreshortened lines
when u rotate left right only the base line gets foreshortened
l____l
l___l
l__l
l_l
ll

l can be the nose tip and l is the end of nise wing
or l is the chin and l is the end of the jaw
or its for the forehead or eye shape or anything this why i simplifie any forst into cubical stuff first.. helps me to understand how my objects behave when i change my vanishing points and or viwpoint

when u rotate up and down u get the l l lines foreshortened.. its the same rule u need ..
when u draw just 1 cube.. its 1 orientation... u can roate ur paper sheet to see what i mean.. draw one cube and rotate.. its one way.. but u also can rotate one cube u drew around 360 degrees its STILL the same cube.. the interrior ?! relation stays same.. cause its still a cube the form and shape never changes when u rotate

hope my explanations are not 2 cunfuzing :D

draw !!

yah000000 u sheephead :D where hav u been dude ? saw u a few times on msn O_o
finaly update yaa good boy ; ) *pat pat* :) :) :)

since when u do the 3D thing ? O_O very cool stuff .. what pog u use 3ds max maya softimage ?
the wheel thing looks awesome.. tried stuff like this too but i failed :/ >:{

good to see u posting again :)
godd stuff - once more i suggest u to do some easy geometrie studies - cubes n stuff - in order to understand how to keep things 3D and how to orient*allign stuff in 3D
foreshortening is also important

try simple heads if u like *check my book to see how i studie heads*
try to draw it cubical in order to understand his volume and its features orientation - for the proportions - overdo some features to eyes to big and move em to the right and to left.. get feeling for its positioning and then check some ref heads and try to analyse how features are placed for "realism" its a special proportion but u can just change it a bit into nonrealism but it still looks cool - try around with this abit :)
..when u do the cube thing.. try to draw cube size like any body part - i mean try to keep the proportions same - arm looking cube leg looking cube.. something like that.. i made good improvement this way and it helped me to undertand body and body proportions bit better :)

keep up teh stuff :yayca:

gotta say chandan,
great amount of improvement from beginning to present; you are getting some really expressive work out, of course we always love to see that kind of thing! it's so potent! Anyways, In addition to the expressive quality, i'm liking how it seems like you are getting less hesitant to make marks, like in this one (http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/6923/img10285ni.jpg) it seems like if some line that you've drawn isn't quite right, it's not something that's going to discourage you! I feel even that this is one of the biggest battles in becoming a bettter artist, the headgames you have to play with yourself.

the highlights for me are the cat skull (love the technique you employed on that one), this, (http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/6866/img10244ww.jpg) and this mentler-reffed ditty (http://img80.exs.cx/img80/4383/img34.jpg). Keep up the fantastic progress!

Hey guggenmaneuver!,

Thanks a lot for the stop! Thanks for the comments and suggestions. About my line quality, I try to imagine in my mind of how i'm going to make the stroke on the plane about 2-3 times now before I actually do it or imagine it as the path i'm driving my car on and that's helped a lot! Anyways, it's awesome that you like the expressive stuff, will make more in the future, but here's a little dump of some new and some old, hope you see something you and others can crit me on!

http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/5303/img00023ip.jpg

Stuff from reference except the cracked out bottom left pose. The cat took me like 50 min. to do because of all the little hairs..and now you can't even see them so that was stupid of me....should've gone for the values first instead of detail. The soldier wasaround 10 min. maybe.

nice man, itrs good to see a lot of studies here.
with the muscles, it helps to learn where they insert and begin, so you can relate that to movement. just writing down a bunch of long names and then pointing it to a random blob of muscle never really helped me much, lol.

on the fourth sheet down, watch your head to body proportions, the first three images on that page are supposed to be women, right? the neck is too short and fades into the shoulders too quickly, the shoulders are too wide.. the hips should be close to as wide as the shoulders on a woman.. depending who you're drawing.. the hips should at least be as wide as the opening at the bottom of the ribs, think about the shape of the pelvis and the insertion of the femur (thigh bone) into it... the iliac crest sits only slightly in compared to the hip joint, both of those spots are usually visible on a nude model, and you should be able to feel those bones on yourself right through your skin.. i'm no expert.. but using your own body to compare those points and see where things sit really helps... even guys have a bit of hips and more often than not, the widest part of the hips is where that pelvis-femur joint is, it's actually bone that makes the tissue mass go out that far, and then it comes back into the knee.. i don't have alot of suggestions for male body, it appears as though you are more accustomed to drawing that type.. so basically, flip ribs and hips for women, smaller on top and wider on the bottom..

hope i didn't tell you anything you already know there...

:)

Chandan
March 20th, 2006, 01:18 PM
@ Amarryth - oh wow! Thanks a lot for pointing that out dude...i'm gonna go draw some naked chicks now. ;) That trick with flipping the hips and ribs for women helps a lot! Also right about the width about the femur..so basically, the width of the bottom of the ribs, also where the abdominus exterior bulges out is about the same width as where the femur connects to the pelis...got it. THANKS!

Anyways, here's sopme pen work some of which I like and some I don't.

As some of you know, I went to that amazing workshop in Montreal. You know, the one you all should've attended? Anyways, that experience has totally changed my life and the views I have on art itself. And in return, it will make me improve ten fold from here on out. So crit the shit (oh that rhymes!) outta my work. Please...pretty please....?

Also a HUGEE thanks to all those that helped me in the hostel and at the workshop and even those on these boards. THANK YOU!

Now i'm gonna take a huge dump...please look while I do so.

Chandan my little man - it's just not the same without you ;)

You seem like you are doing all the right things - studying that anatomy (Bridgman is good ) , doing tons of drawing from life and just trying out different things. I'd like to see some finished pieces as well / illustrations. Just to see how far you can take a piece.

I feel like I don't need to erase over lines as much anymore when i'm drawing from life. Life drawing is getting faster as well. For examples, these hands were no more than 3 min. each for drawing anf maybe 5 min max for the paints on top.

This was a piece done for school in which we had to take something out of nature (a raven in my case), and do five variations of it.

A. Full color
B. Technical
C. Abstract
D. Shape
E. Line

Personally I went with a Raven because it is a bird with an attitude. Depicted throughout society as being dark, I wanted to show that these are birds which have souls too. That's where the red comes in. To show they are living. The connecting branches show how they are a well thought out and smart society. I got this idea after reading that they are one of the smartest birds on the planet.

I also got some inpiration from something I had looked at in nature where these red petals (flowers w/e) had a lot of contrast compared to that of the tree. The background was actually a shot of the sky I took and changed the colour variations on. Then I decided to add some of the blues on the left to the right as well so the eye bounces back and forth.

Nice birds man! Those ravens look really good. All the life drawing is really paying off, all I'd recomend is, if you get the chance, do some really quick poses, like 5-10 seconds. Your gesture and contour stuff is lookin pretty sweet, and really quick poses will get make you really confident in your line. You're doin all the right things, and all the workin is payin off. Just keep it up bro.

Ok, this was done for 2d design class in school where we had to make a poster on a historical figure. Cool stuff man, your life drawing especially has come along quite a bit since the beginning it seems, and you seem to be much more confident with each line your making, which is making your drawings much more fluid. The only crit I have is making sure your looking at the proportions of everything. Where everything is in relation to an object or how the object is being affected. Other than that you have come quite a long way, keep it up!!

BTW the raven piece is phenomenal you have a great sense of design, try incorporating that into more of your pieces you do it well~*

"This one took about 1.5 hrs...god damn i'm slow!"
Dude- don't worry about speed now. The drawing is an improvement over your other stuff. Just worry about accuracy and quality- if it takes you 10 hours! Speed will come with repetition.

You're making great progress. Still struggling with proportions and you need to work on the faces. The hands are looking good. And you seem to be good with colors. Keep on working.

I just wanna thank all you visitors for taking the time to help out a fellow artist. It seems I owe much of my skill to you all. Thanks for pushing me this far and keep doing so.

Sartell: Thanks for the comments. You're right about the proportions...I don't pay enough attention during life drawing. I just draw....hah. I'm hoping to get better at that by doing the CG Talk 50 heads in one month workshop. I'm hoping to take many of my sketchbook pieces in that graphic design goodness in the future.

Main Loop: Damn man....real nice to see you here. Yup, regularly sketching has become so much of a norm and I even do it in when i'm taking a dump. Ok maybe not that far... Again, i'll be sure to watch those proportions when i'm drawing.

Loomer: Ah....your comment just opened my eyes. It' so true...I should work quality and speed will show its face. Gonna do this from here on out starting from the 50 Heads Workshop. Hoping to be twice as good by the end of the month. It's good to see you guys notice he hard work. I guess it does pay off.

Hyver: Damn, so many good people stopping by! Thanks for the comments...your stuff is amazing!

Bartovan: I'm gonna get over the proportions and heads for sure. Loomis is here to help along with ya'll. Thanks for stopping by! Oh and I suck at drawing hands from memory. Gonna do some Bridgemann to help with that.

Andorz: Thanks for the comment. Good to see so many see improvement. Hopefully it won't stop in the near future. Thanks...lot of good people though!

Alright here's some new stuffs!

Hey guys and galz...kind of a slow day in terms of digital work but I did get some life sketching done at the hospital so expect a good update of analog sketchies tommorow. And some self portraits which look nothing like me due to the fact that I have stand in front of the mirror in the bathroom and someone has to use it every now and then ahah.

Magic Man: *bows* Thanks for looking! I won't stop the studies in the near future:). They're already paying off so the more I do, the better I get. Come again!

Comixnut: Thanks! I think they're anything but amazing. Hopefully i'll be getting closer to amazing if I work everyday. I'll definately give the sketchgroup a though or two!

Meanwhile, here's heads numbers 2 and 3. From today on out, it's atleast 2 heads per day.

Oh buy this one was fun!

Hey, just wanted to say hi and compliment your work. Lots of great stuff here and very diverse. Keep it up! I especially like your storyboards and quick thumbnails.

One thing you might want to try is studying the shadow shapes on objects. Remember there are always two shadows, a cast shadow and a form shadow.

Mentler: Thanks for stopping by! Would rather recieve crits than a rating.<3

Sleeper Service: Thanks! But those thumbnails are worthless when I don't incorporate them into a finished piece. :( Just read a book the other day which reiterates about cast and form shadows...really good information because i'm gonna do some acrilic self portraits in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for looking.

Comixnut: THanks!

Ok, I haven't posted in a couple of days because of school. Doing a lot of cool work there. Will take some pics tommorow and post em for crits. Here's some stuff i've been doing in my spare time. About the heads...I'm still aiming for 50!

Glad to see you doing the head thing <> good exercise <> keep fillin' the pages <> try to get more information in your linework <> don't just put a line around something make the line describe it <> think about what the line is doing and where it is going and how it is describing form and avoid going over the same lines.

vast improvement overall. Great recent work. Try working more expressively or in more varied media to relieve the drawings of any hard contour or constricting line.

So i went to the mall and drew for like 4 hours. It was an amazing experience as I noticed improvement, no I FELT improvement in my hand eye coordination. I'm definately gonna do more of this every week. Most of these are 15- 20 seconds each.

Please, please, please tell me what I need to work more on as I want to improve as fast as I can. For example, Main Loop told me about my proportions so I went out and drew more from life...even though i'm still struggling with proportions, atleast I know i'm doing something about my weaknesses.

Here's some stuff from last couple of weeks. School ends tommorow so i'm going into full gear! BIG updates from here on out. Really enjoyed a 3-4 day phase where I read, wrote and observed a lot. A sort of stepping back and seeing the big picture. Really starting to enjoy recent self portrait i've been doing with different media. Having trouble learning from Bridgeman and Loomis....guess the more I do, the more I will learn!

I feel as though I can really get values of certain parts but need to pull my pieces together.

These studies made me realize how much knowing the skeleton helps. Thinking more mechanically in terms of the underlying structure of the body but don't get too mechanical or they'll look like robots!
