Everyone is doing it so I thought I should too! Ha, anyways I thought I'd make a sketchbook to keep me busy, and I could really use others crits/opinions. I wont make any promises, but I'm going to try to keep this updated regularly. (<--- Haha, I screwed that over..)

Here's a sketch to start things off:

Like I said in chat, this is a great speedpainting, with nice, well-chosen colors. It's neat, and you complain about it being 'too neat'. You shouldn't worry about being too neat, haha. I wouldn't know, but I think it needs darker colors near the edges to add a little depth. I wouldn't know, though.

I'm loving the stuff, I like you unique shading style. ;) Were those DBZ drawings colored in photoshop? It's looks freakishly similar to the DBZ Budakai game cell shaded style of the game... post more!

animeidiot
April 29th, 2005, 06:49 PM
Thanks AnDr0M3Cha0Z. Lol nah, everything but the first post is pencil on paper. That dbz drawing was done back when I was first learning how to draw. All I did back then was copy and then started changing things a bit, then....you get the point ;)

So please excuse the lack of imagination in most of what I post right now =/.

Does anyone know of a decent digital cam with a reasonable price?

Hey animeidiot. Your name is familar, maybe i know you from somewhere.

Anyways your style is great, very smooth shading and sensitive linework. I would definitely stay away from that dragonballz stuff though. I know I know I was in to it at one time too but the further away you are from doing production cell art the better artist you are. Key word production!!!

Great stuff man, i would love too see some full bodies in your supersensitive rendering style, though that would take quite a while.
Keep it up!!

Heya! Welcome to our SSG :)
I've just learned who's who in our group (it's rather hard when surfing them at the same time). I must say I'm impressed with your shadings, they're really great! How much time does one 'average' picture take, and do you fix up the shadings digital?

It's going to be hard to give crits, but I'll try ;)
Well.. I hope you post more work. And btw, I see you're using the same anatomy book as me (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/animeidiot/arm_doodle.jpg), I've learned lot's from it, but I find the legs to be hard to study. Maybe because there are so many muscles to memorize and hard to divide into smaller pieces...
.. so anyways..
You better post some more works!

peace out

May 4th, 2005, 03:07 AM
It's good you study from references.

I say your shading seems good, same with the lineworks. I'd look into compositions/environments and such, just to push it further. (Life Drawing would be great in this case.. I don't know if you ever tried but yeah it's worth spending some time.)

Just my 2 cent

You just post the pencil pieces the way they are? What kind of scanner do you use? I mean there would be at least paper wrinkles, but yours are like super smooth.

Wisdom_Cube
May 4th, 2005, 12:34 PM
I think what she means is, scanners are usually crap and you always tend to see darkness areound the paper. It's usually never that clean and white no matter how cleaned up your work is.

Xaya
May 4th, 2005, 01:18 PM
Thanks vigostar, and look. =D

MorteM:Thanks man. The work I've posted are things I've done quickly, so all I know is that everything here so far took 30 mins - 1hr1/2 (Except for maybe the old dbz collage). And no I don't clean up the sketches digitally b4 posting. I scan and post as it is.

For finished pieces I spend 20 to 100 hours depending on size and medium used. Anything digital is usually completed much faster.

Lol, yeah man that book is very useful.

Good to know you need some time to finish that really awesome renderings!
Otherwise i would kick my pencil!

Wonderful stuff...!

You work very constructive/clear!

That face is coming out really really nice! About the scanner and paper wrinkle, It's like wisdom_cube mentioned, it always have some sort of shading around. The only way for me to get rid of those "wrinkles" are either use a roller feed scanner, or get a hard covered book and press on it hard.

wow. Nice stuff. Your pencil work is really good. Great shading. Nothing to crit.

May 5th, 2005, 09:04 PM
Nice sketches man. I love the way you shade. I used to go for smooth seamless gradations too, but I found it took me too long. I guess I figured I could get more done if I didn't spend so long shading, unless it's a finished peice. Good stuff though, good stuff.

That last painting, the self portrait is quite nice! It and the bird really stand out here. Some of the other is clean, as was mentioned, but almost too much negative space. I like the frame on that last one too.

More paintings!

Damn, your photoshop skills are awesome! I wish I could be at your skill level. I've tried my hand at it but...eh you've seen my stuff. I keep going back to pencils. BTW your pencils are really smooth and clean. I really like the pieces with smooth rendering to them. The "bored" piece is my favorite so far. Thanks for checking out my site. I'll be back to check out your new stuff. Later!

ur photoshop work is quite amazing. The detail really sells ur stuff for me... I clicked on ur thread expecting a bunch of anime but i find this, amazing! How long did that last guy take u? The detail is slick, and I swear i have seen that guy before. You could impress us all even more and give us a tutorial on how this is done... Til then i shall drool.

On a side note, the more I look at the last image i keep getting drawn to the face. Everything else in the picture looks very realistic, but his face looks a bit rushed. The hair and the smoke are what is bothering me the most, but other then that it still rocks.

These last images of yours are just great. The last one in particular is fantastic. I've been examining this digital work for like fifteen minutes now. I just love it.

POST MORE! I want to see more! I want to see your rougher sketches too!

As a side note, its nice to see a fellow Recovering DBZ obsessor. Vegeta was my classroom doodle subject as well. I was on the DBZ binge for a bout a year before I quit anime cold turkey. Glad to see someone else made it out, too!
