December 5th, 2004, 04:49 AM
Lim: Thanks!!!
Azazel: Thanks!!!. About the question, all of them are 19x25 inches. The first one is velvet gray strathmore charcoal paper and pastel pencil (brown-red and white charcoal pencil for higlights). The rest are black canson pastel paper and white charcoal pencil. I think this answer the question ;)

December 18th, 2004, 11:17 PM
ohhh so you're the guy that's currently rulling Bradley Hall right now.. I know who you are, I was the guy at Drawing for Animators with the E&A sticker on my drawing board.. heh i had Karl Jensen too.. you seem like another one that got a lot out of him, compared to the other people in class.. Proportions are the biggest fault for now, in the "from life" stuff.. Spend more time measuring stuff out in the beginning.. it gets easier and easier after enough practice.. edges are the second weak point.. you'll learn you dont have to outline everything with a broad line so much.. have you taken much painting classes? once you can paint, you'll see that you can draw in a "painterly" style as well.. when people paint, for the most part they dont put heavy outlines around stuff.. are you an illustration major? Starting next semester, go to as many drawing/painting workshops as you can.. you'll be one of the good guys, i can see it, as long as you keep practicing constantly.. dont slack over the break either!
Sam0s
December 19th, 2004, 12:53 AM
hm..that didnt sound right..
Main_Loop
I disagree, proportions is something down take very seriously and spends a lot of time on...other than the occasional observational slacking (like we all all do when too much mind interferes with the perception) i would prolly say his eye for proportion is close to perfect for his sophmore level. Not having enough time to re-adjust his proportions and outline caused whatever proportional problems you say you see.
Concerning painting and edges...down came in as an established freelance painter to sanfran. Would you care sharing what edge issues you see?, actually, be more specific in whatever issues you see.
Besides these points, I agree. He will be one of the greater senior illustrators at the AAU.
Anyways, knock this thread back up and give us your Finals highlights Albert.

Sanby: Thank you. That is a technique that used a teacher here at the Academy of Art, his name is Karl Jensen. He uses compressed charcoal and no smudge, so u get that effect of texture. more or less that's the technique.
cateaic: Thanks!!!! oh BTW the finals were great ;)
onurbasaldi: Thanks!, yes the dance is coooooooooool hehe.
le_fish: Thanks man, so another AAU student, ah? I'll see you around, i guess...
steak-tron: Thanks a lot man. The developed ones took me ages, yes. the price that the artist has to pay, hahaha....
Pesmerga: Thanks a lot!
Main Loop: Ohhh, so you are Main Loop... I appreciate your crits man, but if you could be more precisee and point were the proportion problems are it would be helpful to me. That would be nice. For the painting question. Yes I took still life painting 1 this semester, but i painted a lot with acrylics in the past. Yes, my major is Illustration, and yes, I will go to more workshops starting from next semester. Don't worry about me salcking, that's something that I can take care of it ;) . Thanks for the compliment man, I hope I'll be one of the good ones, but this is only a matter of work and time man,
Samos: You said it all my brother!!!, Have fun in the workshop man, I'll do the same back at home! Thanks Man.
Here is the final for figure drawing: White charcoal on black Illustartion board. 40x32 inches, yes it is bigggggggg. about 40 hours, but I am not sure. Anyway it was fun and hard to carry up and down the streets, hahaha. I hope you like it. Any crits are welcome, please be specific though, ;)
http://www.down.dj/pics/final
I'll try to post from home, but i don't know if i will be able to do it, i don't have internet back in spain, but I guess my friends will be kind to me. For those that are in SF in January: HAVE FUN AT THE WORKSHOP

Down - I agree with Main loop about issues in the drawings that you did from life(Workshop or class). Here are the things I see.
-Head seems to be slightly small
http://72.10.33.168/pics/semana10.jpg
http://72.10.33.168/pics/semana11.jpg
-Arms and/or legs(In some cases torso as well) seems to be slightly too long
http://72.10.33.168/pics/semana12.jpg
-Watch out for the balance of a standing figure
http://72.10.33.168/pics/semana3.jpg
Your stuff that you drawn from photo ref are great. However, when one draws from photo he/she is transfering from 2D surface to another 2D surface. When you draw from life, your brain have to process the 3 dimension information on to a 2D surface. That is why your stuff from life model does not look as hot as you master studies or the ones with photo ref. I think the point Main loop is trying to stress(correct me if I am wrong) is that by going to more workshop and work from life, you are training your brain to do the thinking. After being trained well in drawing/painting from life, then you will be able to use photo ref much more efficiently.
Don't get me wrong, I think doing master study is a great way to learn how the masters approach thier subjuect.
Also, you seems to simplify the anamotomy a lot when working from life. When you do so, make sure to get the right shape and rythm of what ever you are drawing. Give each part of the body a lot more form and dimension than what you have there. Don't relie on the rendering too much. Use every tool you have(lines, shade, shapes...) to suggest form.
Anyway, just my humble opinions.

December 20th, 2004, 07:42 AM
I know how it is at the Academy, alot of students take photos of models for use on their projects, I don't blame anyone on doing that but the masters always used live models for their work and If you can afford hiring models, please do so or get some of your friends to pose for you. I have no doubt that you go to the workshops alot, that is the best time to ask a model to pose for you live. A problem that could arise is the the lack of workspace at your place, if that is so then just use one of the classrooms at the school and that should be the perfect place to work on your projects!
Perhaps one of the main reasons why students take photos is the abundance of projects put on them depending on what classes they are taking. That can be a bitch sometimes especially during finals week, but all I can say is just plan and organize your schedule and maybe do your stuff earlier than usual so you have space for your other projects as well.

le_fish: Yeaaaah, that's the kind of crits that I like to hear. Thanks man. Now I see the issues. Main Loop pointed them roughly, that's why I asked for a more specific crit. Thanks again
patdzon: Yup, I wish I could work more from models. I think that is the key. But, as you said... time, money and space. But i'll figure it out... Thanks for the coments.

Samos- Youre probably right, these are very good for the experience level.. I just wanna be sure that he keeps these things always in mind, because it's very important for a long pose to get the proportions down solid. Le-fish basically went into the details as far as what i saw..heh, he should run a workshop, he already helps coordinate most of em ;)
What i was talking about as far as edges go, you usually put a rough outline around the form edges, and light and shadow separation is a bit abrupt.. I just took this drawing as an example:
http://remtek.net/0/mainloop/default/images/07/189.jpg
http://www.remtek.net/0/mainloop/default/images/07/188.jpg
I circled the most obvious areas to me that seemed not to need an outline around the edge.. dont be afraid to blend the background and figure in certain areas.. if you need separation, its usually a lot more effective to use tone instead of line.. That's what I meant, i hope it makes sense, if not i'll have le_fish clear it up for me heh

Damn down. This is amazing stuff. The fighting scene (drawing nr 3) is one of the most beautiful drawings I have ever seen. Reminds me of Odd Nerdrum (sry about that - hehe). An exhibition with lifesize works like that would be so sweet. Old Albert looks abit confused - very funny!
