Participants will leave the lecture and demo with a better understanding of light and how to use it in their images...whether they be 3d artists, texture painters, lighters, or concept artists. Jason Manley is going to give a still life reflecting the nature of color while Ron Lectures

***Nintendo's Andrew Jones and MB's Marko Djurdjevic- Creating Dynamic Characters using Gestures Drawn from Life: Andrew will be quickly doing gestures from life while Marko takes the images and turns them into fantastic characters. The main point they will illustrate is how to take something simple like a figure sketch and layer it with ideas upon ideas until it is an entirely believable character. Character Drawing from Life is a good way to describe it. You can apply this to your own work by making sketches while you ride the train or wait at the airport just like they do. This is visual note taking which you can use later in your imaginative works.

The instructors will be knocking out their ideas. The crowd will judge. Who will be crowned Champion??? Marko vs. Coro. vs. Sweet vs Foster vs JP Targete vs. Android vs. etc... It should be an interesting battle indeed. Which instructors will step up to compete? Find out at the workshop!

***Jason Manley-Noxizmad-Justin Kaufman- Advanced Environment Design for Games Lecture and Demonstration: Tired of making the same boring dull environments? Watch as Jason and Nox demonstrate how to do Narrative Imagery in environments. Hear discussion on the creation of "Character Specific Environments". See how an environment can tell the narrative of the world and suggest depth by using symbolism and leaving visual cues. Hear how this can be done in a structured way that will make sense to the viewers. Bring your game levels or film environments to the next step!

***All Instructors Random Image Generation- Pure inspiration...whatever they want to work on! Pick their brains on as many topics as you can think of!

9:30 PM-????? The BIG PARTY- watch for more details on the party soon. Check out the workshop video to see a bit of footage from the last one. It is located in the goodies section of the workshop website. Click the banner atop the forums to find it. That party was in Austin..so we had good ole fashioned Austin style Rock and Roll. This party is in SF...It is going to blow your minds just like Austin did for those who went. Expect an urban vibe and a lot of fun! All ages are admitted. Bar is available for those over 21. Figure models will be provided for those who prefer to draw. Andrew may turn the lights out and make you go dance though. Beware!! ;)

*** Hussar and Assael will continue with their paintings from life. Watch each artist explore their personal technique and see them take two different paths to creating beautiful works from life. Life painting and drawing is the foundation of nearly all art. A better understanding of the visual world helps any artist working with worlds of their own.

Edward Quintero Continued from Day 1- Refining textures as you work, and working on detail. Technical aspects of creating textures will also be continued.

***Ron Lemen- Painting and Drawing Better Heads and Faces. Ron will be teaching Portrait Drawing Fundamentals. This is a non stop lecture while the students can draw or listen. Kevin Llewellyn will be drawing while Ron runs the show. Learn some of their secrets if you can

He will cover shot development, story, technique, and help you improve your ideas on how to achieve appropriate and quality storyboard images. We really do expect this lecture to last all day. If we tried to stop day from talking about this, he would just tell everyone to follow him back to the hotel. Since we love him so much we will be sure he has a spot to discuss and draw. Dan's lectures are as funny and informative as one can hope for. You are guaranteed to learn from him. We do!

***HardcorePiXXX- freelance-Mastering Graphic Elements and Design for YOU!. Watch this guy paint! Perhaps the fastest painter we have seen, HPX will amaze you with his vision but also inspire you with his designs. The audience will suggest a topic. HPX will design for you! Be sure to art direct him! :) just kidding!

*** Michael Hussar - Visual Symbolism- Hear Mike talk about symbolism in his works. He is attempting to bring his originals to share. These are a must see. Symbolism will help all aspects of concept design and entertainment development. Understanding how it works can help you tell stories with your concepts adding depth of character or more interest in what otherwise would have been just another empty hallway with a crate in it. Game developers know what I'm talking about here!

*** Jason Manley-Ron Lemen: Composition and Lighting in Art and Entertainment: See how composition has grown and changed through Art History, see how these same principles are used in games and film. This is the most intensive crash course in composition that you will hear. This lecture is guaranteed to change the way you look at art and entertainment.

6:00-9:00 THE MELTING POT!- Four stations will be set up. Two digital workstations will project and 2 large canvas will be set up. ALL INSTRUCTORS will collaborate on four images for the remaining period. Ever wanted to see what Justin Sweet might do after Jon Foster started a painting? How about see Marko's Drawings with Jason Manley's color use and and and.....see how each instructor brings something new to the concepts and images being worked on. See how the instructors learn from each other. Have fun with this one peeps...it will probably never happen again like this!!!!!

For all you know, you are standing between a Lead Artist from Blizzard and a Character Artist from EA. There are a lot of very very talented and experienced people in attendance. Take time on this day to discuss biz and learn how to make it or even make it big as an artist.

Too many cool things going on at once .. Ugh. It also looks like I might have to miss the Thunderdome crit at the end since I might be in the air. Have to see if I can stay and still get back to the east coast at a decent hour.

Hiya,

I wish I could go to this :( BAH! I hope there will be another one soon closer to the east coast, since the only way I would be able to go to this is if I drove, and still not sure I can afford it. I hope it turns out great, since it sounds fantastic. Good luck to all who get to go and to the teachers.

As always take care, be safe, and farewell

a decent hour? lol you only live once!

take the latest flight...that is my advice. You will see what I mean when you are there and not only do you not want to leave but you won't even want to sleep. That is how it was with me and the people I was around anyhow. Thank god for redbull. :)

Well the latest I could get, without waiting the night in a airport or airport hotel, was around 1:30. Sadly, I will miss the end but have to get back to the day job on Tusday. It really sucks.

Tell me about it...
I ended up paying a 100$ extra to change my flight time...
I wanted to hang with my roomies (Rich, Adam) a few more hours...best decision...having a few shots of Henney with Rich at the airport bar was priceless...running into Ron and Vanessa....and chatting with Dan "the man" Milligan..you couldn't take the smile off my face with plastic surgery...

Wheee! The curricullum has me all excited, I'm still working on trying to figure out which session to attend.

I have a question about day 4's portfolio review sessions tho. Since I'm just getting a start into the concept art world, I don't have a professional portfolio for review (just a student at the moment). But I would love to get a closer look into how the industry is working in terms of hiring potential employees. Would it be ok for me to just hang around other people's portfolio c&c? Or would it be considered rude since it's all formal and stuff?

I'd say that because it is a formal review that it would be extremely rude to impose. It would be the equivalent of you going in for a job interview and some random person decides that they want to come sit there and watch your interview.

last time (in austin) you jsut went up to a pro who wasnt taken and he critiqued you. everyone was swarmed around them to see what people were showing. i cant see it being a problem unless your talking to the pro while another is having there profolio reviewed. just be considerate, dont talk, and wait your turn. should be fine tho

Thanks for the replies. :) I wouldn't dare intruding a formal interview. I guess I was just wondering what the atmosphere is like during the event, and what I can do to get the most out of this workshop. :teeth:
