Okay, I have an idea for a painting that involves large objects at a distance amidst simi-dense fog/clouds. The object will tower out from the fog but still be seen from top to bottom.
My question, what would be the best way to approach this? Paint the object as if their were no fog then paint the fog/clouds over it?
Sorry if this isnt very clear but I cant realy explain it any better.

I think your answer is really tied to what art medium you are using... If you are using Watercolors you need to be mindful of dark and light colors; the fog being most likely the lighter color should go in first and the object being a subtle tint of the fog color until you see it rising above. Or you may want to experiment with leaving negative(unpainted) white space on the paper.
For Oils you have more flexibility with your technique as the paint will stay wet and workable... this will allow you to blend the edges of the object into the fog no matter which goes down first.
Likewise if you are workin digital you have even more flexibility to alter and change your technique/composition.
My suggestion would be to sit down with your medium of choice and just work with some basic colors... blending them together and experimenting to get the desired look you want, the apply what you learn in color mixing to your painting.
