The reason I'm asking here in addition to the usual research anyone woud do on the medical sites is because I'm wondering how it affects artists, especially considering the long hours concept artists and graphic designers spend in front of the computer, straining their eyes over the smallest details. Anyone had it done and if so, are you glad you did it? Any problems/complications?

I did. It changed my life. Playing sports, as an artist, and my eye health.(Contacts are the WORST things for your eyes. They are like big sponges that absorb all kinds of bacteria)
My optimologist says that long hours in front of a computer will not hurt your eyes. BUT if you include stress with those conditions...then a whole mess of crap can happen.
Get the procedure done. It's so easy, a monkey could do it on you. I remmember, I was done, both eyes , in less then 8 minutes!! The next day, my vision was 25/25. Even better than 24/24/!
Be aware though that not everyone qualifies for it. You should get a couple second opinions when you get checked. Cuase some of these guys out there might just be looking for the cash, since almost every optimologist is doing it now.
Being an artist, I think you can write the whole procedure off too!

That's basically what I've been hearing. You're the fourth person who has said to me "It changed my life," and that is really enough for me to know that I should do this. Contacts are just not working for me anymore, and I'm not really interested in finding out exactly what the long-term effects of contact lens usage are. I just know that when your eye is getting maybe half of the oxygen it should be getting and they feel dry and itchy at the end of the day, repeatedly putting your eyes through that strain can't be good.
And I hear LASIK is nearly perfect now... the risk is very small, and the procedure is quick and painless. I guess I don't have alot of reasons not to do it.
Now I just need a few grand to pay for it.. anyone want to donate to my LASIK fund? :D

I had been thinking about doing it, but I saw Jessica Simpson on MTV get the procedure done and it didn't look very appetizing. They slice a flap off your cornea with a blade to direct the laser into the eye without any interference. I hear soon they will do this step with a laser as well instead of a blade...

maybe someday I'll get it done, but for now I'm sticking with glasses. :perv:

I haven't had it done myself, but both of my brothers-in-law have. Both being in the military got it done for free, the lucky bastards. Anyway, the first said it was really painful and he was down for a week, but after that he had perfect vision and everything was cool. My other bro-in-law had it done and was up moving about the next day. Like any medical procedure, I imagine it depends on the doctor you go to, and your own specific health. All in all though, I haven't seen any ill effects from it in them.

i believe both of my parents have had it done. they're older...and right now all my father requires are reading glasses, and my mothers vision is starting to slowly get worse again, but keep in mind they're old, and had it done a while ago. on healthy young eyes i bet it makes all the difference....
no complications with the procedure or results...both saw near perfect when done.

I have certainly considered it, having been 'legally blind' since I was about nine years old. It has only been recently that it was available for people with mt particular problem though, so I have been waiting to see how it has worked, long term , for poeple with in my situation. Has anyone with severe astigmatism had the procedure? It would be amazing to wake up in the morning and just be able to see...

someone i know had it done and now she sees like those flimmering blocks or stuff every now and then.. and she has to wear some sort of strange glasses..
so it CAN go wrong.. but i'm thinking aboot doing it as well.. tho it would be really fucked up if it went wrong and my eyes were a mess.. >:|

You probably went here already but for those that didn't know. I am considering it but am still scared, after all who wants to go blind and for 3000 bucks at that.

Won't compromise anything on my eyes. Its my lifeline.
I've gone 5 years without making new glasses. The last pair of pescription lenses I got was back in 99 before I enlisted in the army....I thought the new glasses were what helped me got my marskmanship badge :bashful:
Before I came over to Canada for school, I had a new pair made (just 4 months ago) and I had an increment of 50 for both sides. Considering I spent over 70 hours a week working in an enclosed environment with florescent light and staring at a computer screen all day long for the last 2 years before I came to school (and that's not including the amount I spent on the comp in the Army) that's a good number.
So I don't think I'll be going for Lasik very soon. I'd like to try contact lenses but only when I'm doing football...err..soccer....so I don;t have to worry about losing my frames through a badly placed header. I still like my glasses.

Yes, I agree with Darth. Too much depends on my eyesight. Still though, it would really be something to just be able to see...

I just made the mistake of watching a LASIK procedure video I found on some website. Man that looks creepy.
For the people who have had it done, can you feel any of what is being done to your eye? In the video that I just watched, the doc used a small sponge to dry the cornea before applying the laser. Does your eye feel dry during the procedure, or do the numbing drops prevent you from feeling anything at all?

the inventor of the procedure... wares glasses, and hasn't had it done... that kinda makes me second guess the whole deal

Glasses make you look smarter.
...and sexier.
I dunno man... the conspiracy nut in me thinks they'll find out your eyeballs fall out 20 years after you get it done. :perv: :eyeloss: :eyeloss:

Actually I was thinking they'd find that out about contact lenses. Supposedly contacts expose your eyes to the same kinds of conditions that can cause infections post-LASIK. In other words, wearing contacts is not necessarily any safer than the LASIK procedure. Plus It's pretty well known that contacts prevent your eye from getting a normal amount of oxygen. I'd bet that the long term effects of contacts will be worse than the effects of LASIK.

The Top Lasik surgeon in Singapore also hasn't gotten it done and are wearing glasses.
Their reason is simple. No one else is good enough to perform lasik on them....they don't trust other doctors enough.
