i've recently started oil painting and i really enjoy it. the only problem is...is that i have no paints or supplies of my own. (i have been painting at school and they won't let me borrow oil paints, thinner, and the stuff to make the paints dry quicker). well, anyways. i went to the local art store and was shocked at how expensive this stuff is. my teacher told me to go look for oil painting kits. supposedly they have the basic colors you need and are fairly cheap. Does anyone know where i can get some cheap oil paints??? how about any cheap internet art stores??? i wish sam's club sold art tools in bulk. haha

Yeah, oils and brushes are a pain, pricewise....but, you do get what you pay for.
check out www.jerrysartarama.com , pretty good deals on stuff.

It's really true that you pay for what you get. I personally wouldn't touch anything that refers to "student" or "academy" or beginner series, but If you really want cheap oils go to Wal Mart and pick up the DALER ROWNEY GEORGIAN sets. It's about as cheap as it gets.
As well, be VERY carefull with that "stuff that makes it dry faster". That's cobalt dryer and its highly toxic, a carcinogin, and your lungs will seriously pay for it if you inhale too much of it. DO NOT take it for granted. I can't stress this enough. Hope this helps. D

I didn't know Wal-Mart carried Georgian oil paint. I actually like that paint, even though it's a little thick right out of the tube.
If you have to resort to using student grade paint, don't worry about it. Use whatever paint you have on hand that's cheap enough that you're not miserly with it. One of the big hurdles I'm finally getting over is trying to paint an entire canvas with too little paint.
If you want economical priced paint, I'd suggest buying Lukas oil paint on www.jerrysartarama. Their 37ml tube paints are all priced at $2.39 a tube at the moment. They handle as well as any other brand of paint out there on the market.
Or even better yet,

They have great bulk discount rates and you don't get miserly with your paint when you're squeezing it out of a caulking gun!

Get Langnickel 5590 long handles... Awesome brushes and cheap... You can go with Georgian Oils, Winton (W&N brand) or Grumbacher Pre-Tested.. I like pre-tested oils... theyre pretty nice for the price..
I made my own acrylic palette out of a piece of acrylic the guy at Lowes gave to me for free.. it works very well..
If you haev a michaels near you, you can get some very good deals on stuff there.. I got a nice table easel for $18 which is normally about $60 and alot of other equipment with thier 40 or 50% off coupons...
If you dont really care too much abotu the quality of paint and jsut want some stuff to throw around to learn, you can get 200ml W&N Winton oils cheap at dickblick.com... I think they were about $5-7 a tube when i bought osme to learn with..
I think I am a master of budget oil painting... :teeth:

Most of Lukas pigments are synthetic.

believe me, its sooo important to spend money on better paint.. Utrecht is pretty high quality for its price.. Rembrant is probly the best of the cheap-ish paints.. too bad we cant all afford the Old Holland..
also, brushes are key.. even more important than paint.. get decent brushes if not good paint..
