oh boy my first post!

it's about time i stopped lurking around here and started contributing. i was inspired by pandawhipped's progress (to the point of stealing his little red arrows) and the many other progress threads and sketchbooks I've seen on here.

this is my first term at watts atelier and i'm having a blast. in some ways it's like re-learning to draw. here is some of the work I've done up to this point, in chronological order - i'm hoping i'll be able to spot my weaknesses more easily this way.

sorry for the crappy image quality.

weeks 1-2

ack. this one is painful to look at. my very first night at watts. moving along quickly...
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/001_headclass.jpg

skulls. my instructor jeff drew the one where the red thing is pointing (the good one)
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/002_skulls.jpg

more skulls...
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/003_skulls.jpg

my first night at the uninstructed figure workshop
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/004_figureworkshop.jpg

figure drawing after my instructor erik showed me how to do a proper lay-in. spent my time with that, so i didn't get to any rendering.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/005_lay-in.jpg

quicksketch. this class is fun, but brutal. the arrows are my instructor mark (those are 1-minute sketches, the bastard.)
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/006_quicksketch.jpg

stabbing at some vanderpoel studies.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/007_studies.jpg

head warmups and long drawing. my instructor ben was showing me how to break the head into more simple forms on the long drawing
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/008_headwarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/009_headclass.jpg

studying planes off the asaro head
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/010_asaroheads.jpg

torso anatomy class - studying muscle rhythms
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/011_torsorhythms.jpg

figure workshop again.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/013_figureworkshop.jpg

figure class. spent most of this drawing fighting with proportions - i tend to flub the torso length a lot.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/015_figureclass.jpg

more quicksketches

weeks 3-4

head class
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/020_headclass.jpg

head study from a xerox of a photo of a drawing (blocking in shapes)
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/021_headstudy.jpg

head warmups
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/022_headwarmups.jpg

i was kind of happy with this one. the moustache is my muse....
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/023_headclass.jpg

heads and heads and heads.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/024_headwarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/025_headdrawing.jpg

torso anatomy class again. more muscle rhythms
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/026_torsostudies.jpg

http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/028_figureworkshop.jpg

i got a lot of help with the proportions on this one. everything below the head is about 80% my instructor jeff's. i kind of liked how this guy's head turned out, though.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/030_figureclass.jpg

the return of the quicksketch. erik (arrows again) taught me about containing forms and interlocking shapes.

week 5

some figure studies at home from photo reference
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/035_figurestudies.jpg

practicing lay-ins from photo ref (they're really light, sorry)
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/036_lay-ins.jpg

more torso studies. my instructor marty made the lower-right one look cool.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/037_torsostudies.jpg

workshop night again. she was fun to draw.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/038_figureworkshop.jpg

figure warmups.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/039_figurewarmups.jpg

figure long drawing. ran into my torso proportion problems again-i'm definitely going to be more aware of that now.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/040_figureclass.jpg

sketches with the quickness
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/041_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/042_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/043_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/044_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/045_quicksketch.jpg

a few head warmups and a long drawing.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/046_headwarmups.jpg

didn't turn out too terrible, but it never really 'felt' like the model to me. ah well.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/047_headclass.jpg

thanks to whoever scrolled all the way down here. i'll keep this updated when i have more to show. :yayca:

I see no improvement from beginning to end.

I'd say, give it up now while you can. >:{

in all seriousness, AWESOME dude. you are putting me to shame with all your drawing and all of your shading and using the pencil and stuff. :dead: where is spaz's stuph? cant wait to see where we all are in a year....

hahaha Mike... you're Watt's post radar must have gone off when Adrian posted this. I'll get mine up soon. Adrian shot his first, and I ran out of sunlight half way through shooting mine. Damn you Adrian for stealing away the sunshine! :nohope:

You are definitely kicking some serious ass Adrian. (If I haven't turned around and yelled that to you across the apt yet...) But slow your ass down. I'll have to be drawing like 5 times more than you to hopefully keep up. ;)

Adrian, great stuff I haven't seen alot of it that was done outside of my classes (I especially like the drawings done of that dashing fellow in the head warmups from week 4) One of the big comments I would make that I see consistently (with the exception of mustach man) is that your shadows tend to be a little light compared to your details and coreshadows, creating a spotty, broken up look to your drawings. Something like this, just a quick fix in photoshop, but it gets the point across... I hope.

Great stuff though!! keep up the hard work

thank you guys.

jp - those kind words would mean a lot more if i knew i wasn't on your hit list. it's hard to draw when i have to constantly look over my shoulder :er:. you're putting me to shame with the amount you draw. i need to absorb some of your work ethic. i'm sure you'll be running laps around me soon. btw, what were you doing skipping out on tonight's workshop? shame shame.

spaz - quit playing hl2 and post your stuff. i know you've got it all waiting to go.

monsieur gist - thanks for the comments and the photoshopping. i definitely see that problem in my drawings now that you point it out. adding that to my list of things to work on. on a side note, i love that mad doctor illustration of yours but it really disturbs me how much it resembles you every time i look at it.

it's been awhile! my first term is pretty much finished now. i feel like i've learned a lot over these 10 weeks, but i'm also seeing so many more things i need to work on. i'm already excited for my 2nd term!

shoulder girdle studies. jeff made the bottom one really shine.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/048_torsostudies.jpg

just a figure study in class, from photo ref
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/049_figurestudy.jpg

workshop night.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/050_workshop.jpg

didn't get as far as i'd like with this one. erik started working on the legs to bring up the values a bit.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/051_figureclass.jpg

head warmups, and a head drawing that i can't take much credit for. the basic drawing was mine, but jeff spent some time at the end of class really making it pop. great learning experience, though!
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/052_headwarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/053_headclass.jpg

quicksketch. the ones with the arrows are not mine (i believe those ones belong to mark)
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/054_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/055_quicksketch.jpg

jeff working his magic once again, on the upper half of this guy.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/056_figureclass.jpg

this was from workshop night. i like how some parts of this drawing turned out.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/057_workshop.jpg

this was the first clothed figure we had done in awhile, and it definitely tripped me up. i hope i'll have more chances to do this soon.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/058_figureclass.jpg

i believe the arrows are erik's this time, but i'm not 100%

head class. i wasn't terribly happy with my drawings that night, but i learned quite a bit from watching jeff work on the long drawing.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/062_headwarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/063_headclass.jpg

this was an exercise in head quick sketch, trying to get a head to read with a minimal amount of indication. these are all from photo reference or from Charles Gibson. jeff did the ones the arrows are pointing to.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/064_headquicksketch.jpg

quicksketches. these were from photo reference and were not under quite as much of a time crunch as usual quicksketches, so I took some time to practice drawing with cleaner lines.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/065_quicksketches.jpg

some torso studies, from photo ref.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/066_torsostudies.jpg

workshop night again! first time i've ever had to draw armor during a life session. i definitely like the added challenge. http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/067_workshop.jpg

figure warmups and a long drawing. i tried to go for a nicer shadow mapping after mark came by and did a tracing to show me how it's done.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/068_figurewarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/069_figureclass.jpg

moooore quicksketch. i think the arrow is erik's (this is why i need to update more frequently. i forget these things)
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/070_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/071_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/072_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/073_quicksketch.jpg

i was reasonably happy with this night of head drawing. didn't get anywhere with the values on the long drawing (way too light), but i think it's a step in the right direction.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/074_headwarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/075_headclass.jpg

more figure drawing. i would have liked to spend a little more time on this.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/076_figureclass.jpg

torso anatomy class. we had a model this night. tried to apply the anatomy we had been learning to these quicksketches. my instructor marty did the nice looking one on the first page (the one i forgot to put an arrow next to)
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/078_torsoquicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/079_torsoquicksketch.jpg

workshop night. she was fun to draw, and it was nice to try to capture a different body type.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/080_workshop.jpg

i was pretty frustrated with this one. the drawing was slow-going, and i kept going over the same areas without making much progress.

last head drawing class of the term. how sad! oh well, only a few weeks until the next one.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/084_headwarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/085_headclass.jpg

quick sketches..
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/086_quicksketch.jpg

i really enjoyed watching ben drawthe lower left one. he started by just blocking in the really large dark value areas. it was inspiring to see it come together
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/087_quicksketch.jpg

torso studies. from photo reference again, because the model wasn't able to make it.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/088_quicksketch.jpg

the lower-right pose is the model's "signature pose", as he made quite clear to the class.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/089_figurewarmups.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/090_figureclass.jpg

this final night of quicksketch felt the best for me. it started out as my most dreaded class, but now i look forward to it.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/091_quicksketch.jpg
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/092_quicksketch.jpg

arrows = mark
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/093_quicksketch.jpg

i tried a few different approaches for the last couple of quicksketches, which ended up being a lot of fun. i think i'm going to try to experiment a little more next term.
http://quietantics.com/images/watts/quarter01/094_quicksketch.jpg

*whew* that's the end of it for this term. note to self: update more frequently than once every 5 weeks.

a few personal goals for next term: 1] work darker 2] more studies at home, especially long studies (to gain more confidence in my values) 3] continue anatomy study at home. probably concentrating on the torso front/back to see how much i retained from the torso class this term. 4] ruin a few good drawings to see how far "too far" is

thanks everyone for looking. for those of you going to the SF workshop, I look forward to meeting you. happy holidays!

[edit: i just noticed it's officially dec 21st as i finish this post. happy birthday to me!]
