That's right peeps, We have a major games developer coming to the workshop to find their next concept artist. This internship is three months and is a paid position. Huge potential for full time employment after the internship is completed for the right person.

Factor 5, makers of AAA video game titles like Rogue Leader and Rogue Squadron are visiting the workshop from their offices in San Fran in order to come see YOU and your work. This is a concept art position and it is going to require lots of drawing and painting. If you are looking to get your break into games as a concept artist, this is it.

This internship is available to workshop participants. Portfolios will be reviewed on site. Bring a cd of your best work, your resume, and a hard copy of your portfolio. Color Digital prints are preferred. You have two months to prepare. oh yeah...and make some biz cards too! :) You will need them.

Internships are a great way to get your start in games. I did nine months of intern work myself and found it invaluable. I remember puddnhead telling me it was like getting paid to go to grad school. Now considering that the lead artist at Factor 5 is none other than James Zhang, I think you might learn a thing or two while you are there about your craft. They have a stellar crew including Jim Moore and many others. Their games are fun and will be creative and challenging as well.

They have a great project for next generation console and they need your help.

Questions may be asked in this forum. Jaymz will answer any important questions.

They will not be reviewing portfolios until the workshop.

The position is in house and in San Francisco.

I wish you all luck.

yeah...it is the real deal. If you have the talent and work ethic...and your social skills are decent, then you will have no problem nailing a full time position out of this. Real cash, real benefits, a great project and more.

If you have a good job, SF is the best city in the country IMHO. I wish you all the best.

My eyes are bleeding! AGH GOD!!

A few questions....i suppose that with myself being in school...the chances of them picking me is pretty much zilch right? Or is there someway of going about that? Not too mention my lacking ability (In my oppinion atleast). And if i brought a portfolio, how many of such and such should i bring? 25 enviroment pieces of mine? I appreciate any and all help.

Thanks

Thats what i wanted to hear. Working on sci-fi themes would be cool. I'm working my ass of to prapare a nice portfolio. San Francisco workshop will be a blast. Let's see who's gonna get that intern.

are there gonna be some other studios hiring concept artists? It would be nice.

BTW: Without Jason's help, i couldn't make it to San Fran. So i owe you alot Jason. Thanks alot.

i think that a range of work...post apoc....fantasy...sci fi...adventure.....etc...would help you all get work. James tends to like people who can draw real well....both environ and figure/character ....he loves great linework but he is first and foremost an idea guy. If ya hear what I'm sayin. but if its a simple idea beautifully done that might work too.....basically he likes cool stuff. He also digs composition and design. If you have examples of this kind of stuff, you will have a better shot at claiming the prize. look at the pro portfolios on the main page for hints as to what can be in a concept art portfolio....keep in mind he likes peeps who can both draw and paint.

if I am not mistaken he enjoys a great figure drawing/painting every now and then and really digs landscapes and sketchbooks....outside of concept design stuff.

what the other factor five team members might want to see...hmmm....well that is what you must figure out.

best,

J

Hey everyone,

Yeah, this is the real deal. Factor 5 is a great company and I have no doubt you will enjoy your experiences here and learn a great deal as well. Jason, Andrew, myself, we all started with the whole internship thing. I can't stress enough the benefits of learning in a work environment as opposed to a school environment...and for those of you who are in art school. Having something like this on your resume is going to be a HUGE boost for your job search next year. Also remember that you will be:

*drawing/painting all day
*helping to make a next gen game
*paid
*living and working in one of the most gorgeous areas the US has to offer.

Portfolio suggestions.

An aspiring concept artist looking to break in to the entertainment industry should know that companies will be looking for basically 2 sets of skills. Your technique as an artist and your design skills. Ideally, you want those to go hand in hand. (I will go into this more in my character design workshop.)

So in your portfolio, I want you to show these 2 skill sets to me and only show me your BEST work. Don't include something just for the sake of 'covering it'. 1 bad piece can ruin 20 good ones.

Show examples of:

* Traditional skills (line work, values, a few figure pieces, etc)
* photoshop skills (show some color, painting techniques, etc)
* environment work (organic and inorganic, focus on composition)
* character/creature designs (pay attention to anatomy, clothing, equpiment, etc)
* I would prefer to see work more realistic rather than stylized.
* Keep it between 20-40 pages.

Good luck and have fun! :)

Hey Jason and James is it possible to send work in. I understand that physical presence for promoting your work is paramount but I'm still in school so I want to know if they even consider those who don't show up.

Thanx, obi

Sup yall,

Regarding sending work in, Jason and I are looking at this to be an exclusive Conceptart.org workshop deal. So if you want a shot at this internship, you should plan on coming to SF. Sorry.

However, from Factor 5's perspective, we will be looking for the most qualified candidate...both in terms of personality and in terms of his or her portfolio. In the unlikely event that we are unable to find the right person for the job at the workshop, we will open this opportunity to the public.

goodluck.

I'm not sure if my question is something that could really be answered on a message board...but i was curious as to how skilled you expect your intern candidate to be? perhaps a dumb question cause of course you want the best.. but I'm guessing you don't expect any of us to be at the same level as those that actually work with you in the "professional" group.. I'm about 3 years into art college, just as a point of reference..and i'm wondering, are you looking for people at a level expected some years after earning a degree? or is it ok that someone is obviously still studying.

I'm just a bit clueless as to what i should aspire to when preparing a portfolio, and any help would be appreciated. I read the posts of what types of pieces you're looking for, but yeah, i mean more of what skill level you look for in your interns.

Thanks,

Jason Manley

you need to be skilled enough to do the job. they dont expect a mullins or a justin sweet....but they do expect as close to professional as possible...those who r ready to make the big leap to being professional are those who have the best shot. if you still struggle with foundation stuff...dont know your anatomy...perspective..etc...then you better get workin on the stuff now...cuz you have what..six weeks?

good luck

best

for those of you that don't think you have what it takes.. it doesn't matter that you don't get the position at the workshop. What matters is that you will be creating industry contacts that can track your progress through persistancy over time, and having this initial personal interaction will set you apart from the average artist who applies electronically. I have a little over a year and a half left on my enlistment in the Navy, and I'm going to the workshop to learn from the masters and hopefully get my name out there in the community because I couldn't apply for a job even if I wanted to. Remember, attitude is everything, with the right attitude and a constant drive to improve your work you will be unstoppable!

thanks for the response J

and Undertow, I agree with you completely. i'm going to this workshop to learn, to get myself out there among the artist community, and whether or not i am at the professional level yet, i'll at least find out what that means and get a clearer definition/vision of my goal.

I've never been to anything like this workshop, but already it seems like it'll be a more than worthwhile experience.

p.s... if there is some magical way to whip up into a professional skill level in six weeks ..wow.. i think that requires contracts with satan..

In response to "what Factor 5 is looking for..." Again, an ideal internship should equally benefit the company and the employee. We are looking for someone who can come in and immediately help us with doing concept art. This is a big deal. I know many current professionals who got their start as an intern. And almost every one of them will testify that it was a fantastic learning opportunity as well as a good leaping point in their professional careers.

If you're not confident in your work, well...you have to ask yourself why. Am I not working hard enough? Am I not working smart enough? Who can help me? Do I need more practice?

If you're going to the workshop, use all of us to the best of your advantage. Ask us to help you address these issues...and make SURE to get your portfolio looked at.

good luck.

I can't wait! But Jaymz I have one question. Are you going to have enough time to get through all the people that want to interview? It seems like there's gonna be a lot of people lined up to speak with you. Is there an expected time limit? Thanks and I can't wait for this opportunity, I hope you're looking for some Industrial Design Kids. .

November 29th, 2004, 03:27 PM
are any of the companies willing to wait for some more time than january?
i mean i'd really love to get into any kind of pre-experience,but atm i have civil service going on which lasts till oktober.
and as far as i've figured they want the artist to be on spot and not work with him over the internet, right?
are there any companies present who are willing to deal with the artwork over internet, atleast for some months? :bashful:

Hey guys,

re: "Are you going to have enough time to get through all the people that want to interview?"

Yes, we will get through them all. I can guarantee that.

re: "are any of the companies willing to wait for some more time than january?"

It's a company by company basis. For the Factor 5 opportunity, in the unlikely scenerio that we don't find any qualified applicants that are available in late Jan or so, we can wait a little while for the right intern.

re: "they want the artist to be on spot and not work with him over the internet, right?"

Correct. it's an onsite only opportunity. please read the post carefully.

best,

-JZ

I am SOOO envious of all you folks who can go to the workshop!! (I live in Spain and it would cost bueauxcoups bucks to make it. $600 US for three days and a day of portfolio review by the BEST! The schedule looks absolutely NUTS! Hey, do "yous guys" ever post some kind of review of what goes on at these things? It might be impossible. Hell you should holographically film the whole damn thing, every minute of every workshop! "I'd buy THAT for a dollar!" (What's that quote from?)

Do you know of anything similiar to the workshop in Europe? Will you pleeeease bring the thing over here? Seriously!

Well at any rate it is an inspiration to see you putting it on, and something to shoot for in the future. I think I am going to expand my work from pinups and figures into concept art, and try to get something going somewhere.

Good luck all, hell, you don't need luck so much, so
GOOD SKILL TO ALL! (Well, a lot of luck too!)

By the way, in case you didn't already know, THIS BOARD ROCKS!!

Best in paint,

hey, i'm not sure if this is the right place for this or not, but i"m the environment concept artist at SCEA's Foster City development studio. We are currently seeking an environment texture artist with good modeling skills (experience with maya) for a contract position, and i was hoping that I may be able to find such a person at the workshop this weekend.

I'll be in attendance (learning as much as possible :teeth:) and i really hope to have a few solid candidates by the end of the weekend. I don't know what the real process is, but i'd like to collect website and contact info at the very least.

i guess you could PM me if you have inquiries

thanks, and i can't wait to hit this workshop. man, it's going to be so damn inspiring!
