these sketches are looking REALLy nice. your characters are all very individual and well thought out. I like how your able to sculpt the characters with such minimal usage of line too, it looks like you know exactly what you want when you start and are able to do just that. the one thing i'd say as far as a criticism is that you may want to try throwing in some more value, really pop those guys out off the page. great work though, keep posting.

For real this is a wonderful bouquet of fragrant awesomeness in sketch form. Glad to see your keeping busy dude, but hey, I know your busy in big fancy art school  Are you almost done? If i remember correctly you had a year or so left.
This all looks really good to me dude, that first pic is one of my fav of your portraits. I love the imagery yer pulling out of that sick brain of yours -looks at pic of floating amputee- If you want a crit i'd say try building values on the sketches more. These have great form and structure but it might be cool to put down a ground and pull out some highlights. Don't be afraid to dig into em'.
keep it real homes, see you in frisco.

im working on more traditional media lately, mostly oil paints, i need to hone my wacom skills a bit more but i just LOVE oils, ill take some pics of my recent paintings soon.

Do you always start out sketching so loosely and begin to tighten 'em up? You've got some awesome style. I know I used to glow about you in the old thread and I'm back to do it some more! I just love your work, bro.
The Cockblocked one is awesome, as Flex said. But I really like the girl with the robot... I can't wait to see that all finished up. Lovely work, bro. You've got some imagination. How often do you draw per day? And how large of a sketchbook do you work in? Some of those pages looked pretty big.
Keep it rockin' bro. It's awesome to have you back. ;)

awe-zum posts ma-man :)
Juss like last time, I'm lovin' it! :nohope: [nodding at myself disappointingly for making the McDonalds reference]. Really some of those pics are eye-popping, Longgirl.jpg is one of my favorites of yours. It's a very elegant drawing, great delicate handling of the features and the colors work beautifully, esp. with the yellow highlights. I'm really looking forward to seeing these in person.
Girl on the robot is a great one too. hand studies... damn those are some nice ones! There's so many it's hard to comment on allovem.
Since you mentioned crits I'll try to offer up some suggestions: As I said before you could push value. If you were to render everything out almost all surfaces of the object in question would have a variation of tone. In allot of these sketches you have an outlined form with a few tonal changes but it's more like a notation. Use the structure you establish in the beginning and push the value down the scale. Darken up the spots you put in the beginning and shade further in. I think you understand this stuff so I wont keep rambling, you have great value in your paintings. I just think you could push this more, I also notice allot of shade hatches going in the same direction which can flatten out the form. i'd suggest Killing.people's thread, he's been doing some hatchings along the form of the object recently much better than I can. He also has a great explanation for the theory behind it.
Great portraits dude, I think I spied a Kyler Dirtch in there :tihi: . You're hard work shows, I have no doubt you'll have a successful and fulfilling career from what ever you decide to do with your talent.
Keep posting man, iss always a pleasure - we'll get some drawing on at the coast.

you have a real nice consistency between your drawings where the ones not-from-life still have a nice sense of solidity and the ones from life still keep some of the lightness and sense of imagination of your not-from-life drawings. Did that make any sense at all? I admire that very much and wish I could manage it myself.
How do you do it? I guess it comes from experience and practice. Dammit, where's my magic wand - I want it now! :frustrated:

cool stuff, once again man. I like that second girl portrait. It has really strong lines (something i lack, as in completely). About that shading tips? i think i'll talk to to on aim. I gotta develope a good concept of basic art skills. I think i'm fine in the creativity department, but my shading, line, and color (something i'll reveal later) need desperate help haha. Oh, crit - I thought that the gobline king pic was kinda wierd. The crown was kind of a distraction. perhaps you can make highlights on the crown ? anyway, one month summer break is coming up, and guess what i'm gonna do....DRAW! :confident

Hey Miguel,
This stuff here is pretty cool. I'm still lovin those gouache paintings in your toned sketchbook, I'd like to see a lot more of those. My only suggestion would be to draw more from life and spend more time judging proportion, etc before jumping to rendering. Keep it up man, looking forward to seeing you again in SF.

Nice stuff man, im really liking your faces and creations in pencil. All looks really solid. Your colour work is vibrant and colourful which is nice.
Only crit is with your last digital one is that it doesnt look like theres much behind the foreground of the trees. I mean its like youve painted it on that greyish/blue backgrund and not thought of the obviously many trees and bushes (its a forest right?). Only other thing, the top half of the girls body, seems a size bigger then the bottom, its like the her legs and srunk and her elbows are close to her hips, looks good otherwise. Make he legs a wee bit longer and wider and it should look cool, feet could be a little longer aswell.
nice work anywho, keep it up.

jeff - im staying at the triton with crunch and other guys, but we WILL hang out.
phatdaddy - thanx, true, i have to finish some parts, add more contrast and really make the overall piece a tad darker, and get rid of the god-awful white light. but its a try in my digital dept. which i have very few paintings or finshed pieces.

December 12th, 2004, 03:08 AM
Hey Miguel, Greg here. You know I love that sketchbook of yours; your imagination gives you quite an edge on most illustrators. I agree with the previous crits on the forest piece, and I'll add that you could also emphasize or fade certain edges to better move the viewer's eye through the piece and to your focal points. For instance, push the lighting on the back of the tree and darken the background around it so the leering posture of the tree becomes more visually evident (just one example).
As for the robot and girl,
drawing for a finished piece in digital...or traditional....?
I think you should do some digital color studies, then paint it in oils. I'd really like to see some of your energetic paletteknifery in a finished illustration. Of course, that's assuming you have your oils with you...
And you've gotta respect a good cockblock.
imglue
December 12th, 2004, 01:12 PM
yea im gonna work on the piece while im out, unfortunately due to the fact that im traveling light, i could only bring as few materials as possible. im gonna tighten up the WIP girl / forest piece. the girl and robot MIGHT be end up digital or i might mix oil and digital, but i dont have my oil paints, nor have i had the time to take pics of my oils paintings. :nohope: but im gonna finish alot of finshed pieces this break in time to have a somewhat solid porfoilio for sf.
thanx greg, hope you doing well, as soon as i find access to a scanner ill send u something so u can finsh it and we can do that collab thing.

Its really good miguel but i say that all the time. Wondering what is the green area next to his head on the left is that hair or a cloak, because whichever it is it would be blocking some of the light from the halo on the arm on the left side. I can tell you already thought of that, but it still seems a little too bright. I know that you have more than one light source, but that seems to be the prodominent one, but as Theil would say IT DOESN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN IN REALITY. anyway Its looking really good.

A site is in the freakin' works! WOO HOO! :confident I'll really be lookin' forward to that, bro! I can't wait!
Another wonderful post, man. These little creatures are awesome. You should make t-shirts and stuff and sell 'em on your new site. lol Chicks would eat it up! It reminds me those plush figure they sell in Japan... what are they called, San something I think. It's also reminds me of Yoshitomo Nara's stuff. Very cool. I love the little oompa lumpa lookin' dude too. How'd you get so good with color! So vibrant and fantastic feeling! I'm so jealous. I just got a new Intuos3 and I've been toying with it but I have no idea what I'm doing. Any pointers? How do you ususally get at a digi work? You do such a wonderful job with 'em.
Keep this thread a rockin' and I'll come a knockin'. ;)

thanx zebs, yea i like nara's stuff, im not familiar with the other names. but the creature i think your trying to tell me is DOMOKUN. i see the resemblence, but they werent inspired by him.
i dont know much about color actually, i just learned the basics, and read up and looked at what my fav artists were playing around with it. you can get the coolest temperatures with some of the most surprising color!!
the people who you should look at regarding color are :
vermeer, nerdrum, freud, coro, amano, aaron board (http://www.aaronboard.com) and of course from life.
i dont particualrly like intuos 3 :[ cuz some of the gadgets you can do just as well if u know the hotkeys. but just do alot of studies, im still learning. im gonna do some mastercopies from other digital artists i LOVE <3
thanx again.

December 19th, 2004, 09:45 PM
Thanks for the info, bro. I've already been admiring Coro's stuff for sometime but I'll definately check out some of the others you mentioned.
I like the hot keys on the Intuos3. I ususally tuck the keyboard back under the desk and just use the tablet. It's more like actually having a sketchbook now in my opinion. I dunno. I've come to love it. Altho, I am brushing against those scroll pads a bit and zooming, changin' my brush sizes, etc. lol I love it so far tho. I just hope I can get better with it.
Thanks again for the pointers. I always admire your imagination btw. You really have a creative head on your shoulders. There are worlds you reveal to me in your drawings that I can't seem to get out of my own head on to paper. God willing, I'll be able to share my dreams with everyone the same way you do. Beautiful stuff, bro.

wow, i havent posted in ages!!! finals , work and moving have taken quite a toll on my time. im sorry i avent kept ppl up to date, but so far, i am moving off campus and i have had realy crazy finals. i am right now in cali, so i am scanner-less at the moment, but i am painting more than i am drawing almost so it doesnt make much difference. i am drawing alot more though, i am experiencing a big growth in my sketchbooks, paintings and illustrations. ill keep you all posted and i promise to try and update this thread a much as possible.
by the way, imglue.com is up and running with a temp site. im developing more things around that project, plus other things. freelance, comissions, and a trip to italy. so its a busy summer for me.
congrats to my buddy kemp on the job at massiveblack!!
zebs= no prob man, i aint neva scurred. sorry i havent replied much, thanx alot.
im doing stuff in watercolor and gouache and ballpoint pen in my sketchbooks, experimenting more to get what i want out of the page.
