thats how it works!
i have over 150...still no posts, it sucks.

the lighting on the first is weird, yet cool way!
other than that, not to be rude, but some of the shots seem kinda plain, ya need some spice on that steak!

But i would say the color and lighting is very well done.
is this a digi cam or manual? how much for this camera?

I LOVE the upshot of the tree, never thought of that. Also like the last one on the first post, the sun rays are sweet.

Also the airplane one is also a good one...if the airplane wasnt there i would of just pased it by sine it would of been kinda sorta a normal sunset or sundown pic. But nice photos.

i sat comparing the netral and the halo version of the pipe, really cool stuff. i'm liking it as your avatar haha :P

the stairs are cool but yea the sky is rather blown out. what you could do(not sure how replicate the effect in the darkroom) is make a selection of all parts of the sky in PS and knock it out of the existing photo, then make a layer of the original behind the current photo and intensify the color to make it pop. i wish i knew how to do something like this in the darkroom, but alas i've only begun my journey into photography. really great version though, some good light and shadow and nice colors :teeth:

For starters, Injection, doing the burning and dodging effects that he is creating in photoshop would be fairly hard in a traditional dark room. Thats why most photographers try to expose right the first time on the film so that they don't have to compensate in the dark room. A good way to get around this is bracketing, or, shoot several shots of the same composition. First shot, under expose the shot by two stops on your camera, second shot, shoot for perfect exposure by your light meter, last shot, over expose the shot by two stops. In this way you can get different amounts of detail in different areas of the picture. The over exposed shots will have more detail in the shadows and the under exposed will have minimal detail in the shadows. Its been a while so I might have that backwards. Also the other thing you can do is meter your shots for the part of the picture you want perfectly exposed. Like if you want all the details in a shadow in one picture, you would center the shot on the shadow and meter the light, then keeping the same exposure settings shoot the picture the way you want it framed.

Secondly, Morbid, you got a good idea of where to start in photography. I do think however you need to focus a bit more on composition. As a photographer each element that gets left in or out of the picture is more and more critical. It is also for this reason that most people that learn photography do so in black and white. By changing your work over to black and white you can start to see the design and shape elements formed in your compositions. In color this tends to be a bit harder to do. My friend who works as a photographer will sometimes shoot with his digital first in black and white to get an idea of what shapes the lights and darks are making. Then he will shoot the same shot again in color.

Part of the reason that the arches picture is so strong is because the picture has a good round composition with the few verticals in it to break the circle your eyes follow on the picture. By darkening in the arches you increased the contrast and increased the strongest element in the composition. As you get further and further into photography you even have to start paying attention to how the negative shapes work in the picture.

Last, and most important, photography is the medium of light, so really focus on the lighting in your picture. I have friends that will sit and wait with a tripod for hours waiting to get the light they want in a shot. The light that falls on a subject in a photograph can potentially change every minute. So every minute is that chance for a different picture.

If you want the best book you could ever get on photography I would suggest Photography, by Prentice Hall Publishing. It is one of the most comprehensive books on photography I have found and well worth the investment in it. I have been told that some photographers refer to it as their bible.

Keep up the good work man. Your photos only get better and better the more of them you shoot. :rendered:

Thanks. :teeth: :P I like your B/W shots! Think Im gonna try some black and white.

Gahz
I think your right about composition, the only thing I really pay attention to when taking my photos is the rule of 3rds and where i place the horison. If I shoot macro i think about the depth of field too but thats about it... would you suggest I shoot some b/w shots to get better shapes and composition?? I will also check out the book you recommend. Thank you very much for your comprehensive reply! :)

I would say go ahead and shoot some BW. It won't hurt your skills any. Plus you will also get a chance to see how the silver crystals give your photos a different texture. Thats the main reason that people fall in love with traditional dark room work.

As far as the rule of thirds, thats a good place to start, but it can tend to start to make all your pics look the same. :dead: I would highly recommend that you look up the word Notan and talk to your teacher about it. Notan is a Japanese word for the shapes formed by the objects in a composition, which includes the positive and negative shapes. There are several exercises you can do to practice the shapes your pictures are making and those can help. For instance take BW construction paper and cut random shapes out of the black and place it on the white. Pay attention to how the white paper behind will start to form different shapes that your eye will gravitate to. Also too look at how sharp angles at the edges of your composition will draw the eye.

Another exercise you can do is to draw squares and randomly put lines through of different weights. You will start to see how different objects and their sizes/shapes will bring about different feelings. For instance square objects are perceived more solid, round objects will seem softer, triangles balanced on the tip will seem fragile and unstable. Also people will perceive objects differently depending on where they are placed in the composition. Objects at the bottom seem grounded and more stable, objects near the top more lofty and dreamy.

So as you can see composition is not the easiest thing in the world but the more time you spend thinking about it the better you get at it. Above all though I say shoot till your hearts content. Most people I know have to shoot several rolls to get 4-6 prints that are really good that they like. When I shoot for a show or an assignment I will shoot 2-4 rolls around the same idea or theme to get the shots I want to use for the series. The more time you spend looking through a camera the better your gonna get, just like drawing in a sketch book.

Keep up the good work though, I can already see improvement. :^^:

Have fun!

Thank you again for your reply, you seem to know alot about composition! I think my photos so far have been more about colors than composition, because when I tried black and white i was very dissapointed. But it made me realise that I can improve alot by studying composition. I have a digital camera by the way. I just use the black and white mode, so unforunately I won't see the difference in crystal texture. I have no teacher either, I've learned all I know by myself (and the internet). I've taken about 3000 pics so far. I was going to take photography at school but I didnt get a place in the class. :(
What you say about composition sounds really interesting, I'm gonna check out that Notan thing for sure! :)

I was at our cottage yesterday and today, and I tokk around 200 shots. Most were crap but we had really interesting weather. :P There was like a flash of sunlight every 5 minutes, because it was very windy and cloudy. I had some fun experimenting with the flash. I found out that if the background is overexposed, I can meter the light for the backgrund and use the flash to light up the subject. Also I sometimes used a piece of paper or a dead leaf to diffuse the flash if it was too sharp.

I love this new stuff. The compositions are much more interesting. I especially like the second picture of the dark trees. The linear shadow lines of the trees coming toward the picture plane give it great perspective. I would use this photo as reference for a back ground for an illustration. Also the very last picture of the tree dividing the picture plane is very good as well. All of the lines converging on that small piece of shrubbery sitting on the knotted portion of the tree gives it a great focal point. The other thing that is really great about it is the dark shadow on the tree creating a dark line that forms an interesting solid shape in the composition.

Good work! Keep it up. :rendered:

Thanks Gahz, Im really glad you liked it!
Honestly, I didnt think about the composition things you mention, but maybe Im starting to get a feel for it by intuition. Wouldnt hurt knowing about the rules though. it doesnt show on these low resolution pics, but there is a dead pixel on my cam, so Im sending it in for repair soon. It will take 3-5 weeks to get it back so there will be no new photos in that time. :(
But I will try to take some this weekend.

sweet :D well i really like the bottom left and the bottom right of the group, very nice compositions and lighting. as for the others, they're pretty nice too but i am not really a fan of glare from a lightsource, especially the sun because it is too overpowering and takes away from the rest of the composition.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/morbid30/th_IMG_0734_mflower_magenta_blue_orange.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/morbid30/IMG_0734_mflower_magenta_blue_orange.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/morbid30/th_IMG_0736_mflower_magenta_blue_orange.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/morbid30/IMG_0736_mflower_magenta_blue_orange.jpg)

I really like these. The composition on both is very pleasing, especially the multiple flower pic - the color leads your eye all the way back into the shot.

Thx Frontline!
I made another attempt today. Better light conditions and I think the shots are nicer to look at.

that flower series is an amazing work of photography, i not only love the image itself, but the texture and colors of the flowers contrasted with various forms of blooming give a playful and soft feeling to the whole piece. you've truly captured the essence of that flower, incredible work.

from the series as a whole, i think this one is best, due to the incredible composition, however the lighting is PERFECT, but sometimes well lit things show off the light ITSELF rather than the subject it is illuminating

Thank you very much for your comment! I agree on the light. But I think I still prefer the later pictures. But the light is harsh and sharp. Is there a way to diffuse the sunlight? Maybe some diffuse transparent plastic or something...

wow, just breath taking on that last series :D

i mean seriously beautiful shots, i do agree with greg on that picture, the lighting is quite nice. i'm thinking a way to diffuse sunlight would maybe be some type of fine netting of some sort, something not too dark in color but just right so not to kill the shadows..dn't know just a thought

anyways keep it up! :teeth:

Morbid, first off, i'd like to tell you that these are some awesome shots. Second, i'd reccomend that you invest in a circular polarization filter to get really saturated blues straight out of the camera. Also, if you're shooting digital, remember that its better to underexpose than it is to overexpose, since you can't 'tone down' burnt pixels. Great industrial work, man. Hope to see more.

Hey Search, thanks for commenting! Yes you are right, my camera tends to overexpose. That is why I have began to use the maual mode more and more, because I start to see the advantages in it. I use the cameras light metering as a guide and then sometimes go down 1 or 2 steps from that. And I actually have a polarizing filter, but Im not sure if its circular. By circular do you mean the polarization pattern is circular or do you mean the shape of the filter? :) I dont use it vey often though, because its a hassle to put it on and off, and the camera doesnt fit in the bag with it on.

On your demand here is some more. ;)

Gorgeous images Morbid.
Please know that I am gracing my screen with your images (if you don't mind). You should definitely copyright your images.
Not reading through the thread, so pardon me if someone's already asked this: what type of camera are you using (and components)?
Cheers!
Dave

Thank you for looking!

Mollyduker, it was a lazy lizard. Thanks for the compliments! :)

Redehlert, Im glad you like them. Actually I took about 400 photos this weekend at our cottage, so Im happy some turned out OK. :) What do you mean by gracing? Sorry, english isnt my first language, but if you mean you using them as desktop wallpaper, then sure, go right ahead! :) My camera is a digital compact Canon Powershot A95.
How can I copyright my images?

redehlert
July 5th, 2005, 04:44 PM
Gracing - your images are a blessing to have on my screen, Morbid. :tihi:
Copyright - you'd have to check and see what the format is in Sweden. But for starters, just putting this statement on your work is a good visual beginning plus it can drive work your way: Copyright © 2005, yourname here. All rights reserved.
(You could add your web site address to this as well).
I'm not all savvy with © (know enough to be dangerous) from a business perspective, but I want to remember who did this work 5 years from now...know what I mean? Small print, lower right or lower left corner is pretty good.
Looking forward to more of your work!
Cheers,
Dave

i wish i had your camera! :) Great quality...
but your contribution has to show... Most of the pictures have nothing but the bliss of the camera... you have to find the right elements to make your photo show a message, to give a feeling to the viewer...

my favorites - 5 and 6 on the first page and the flower on the wood on this one.. :) The lizard is also very nice!!

cheers!!

I see what you mean. redehlert. I will think about it next time. I have no website for my photos yet but Im planning one. Thanks man! :teeth:

Hey Icey, thanks for visiting my thread! I agree that most of my pics are a bit meaningless. Im working more on my composition and technique right now. Once I get over my fear of photographing people they might get more meaningful, i hope. Yea Im very happy with my camera. Its got a manual mode, which was essential for me, and Im pretty happy with the picture quality, but I have understood its more about the light conditions than camera pic quality. It cost a bit over 300 $ i think when I bought it. (3200 SKr)

my favorites of all are the flower pix,all of them !they are alive and beautiful and vibrant and...congrulations.you are great on the stills and landscapes,my only suggestion would be while you are keeping on working and posting on the new shots here, give a little work on presentation because i think you are very close to the "i am showing my portfolio"stage...for my own pleasure,i would like to see the flowers together for example:)sorry for being selfish and making a request but you got me into all this flower thing now,i guess your photographs got me excited:)...thanks for posting,it was a pleasure...

keep posting!

The first bird picture is by far my favourite of the bunch! The background is very soft, the bird looks soft to the touch, and the detail in the grass in the foreground is great. The composition is very nice and the colours are also very good. Nice shot! i like the second bird picture as well, but the bait distracts me. I dont know how many Megapixels your camera is, but i think it would look really nice if you cropped the photo with the sun on the lake such that you could only see the water with the sun on it and not the wall in front. The wall in front is nice a nice frame for the water but it is also slightly distracting. I think both could work as two pictures with two purposes. As usual i continue to enjoy your photos

Morbid
January 11th, 2006, 06:11 AM
Yes, the bait is distracting I agree. I made a crop of it and it looks a lot calmer. As for the sun and water shot I might try cropping it later, Im afraid it will get a bit uninteresting. As always, thank you for the comment!

fisherman is my favourite - like that calm atmosphere. but the photo you shot out of your car is nice too. although i would probably crop the bottom part a bit. i guess if you crop all of your car then the reflections wouldn't be understandable...
