As you all know, Bengal has deceptively simple lineart that has maximum effectiveness. Furthermore, it is CLEAN.:needle:

In my quest to make my lines as clean as possible, I haven't progressed very far, and I wonder if my style simply isn't conducive to that type of line work.

Should I be worrying about this kind of thing? Is being sketchy OK?

Hey, some people don't even USE lines... So you have to keep it in perspective. Different styles call for difeerent line techniques and all a piece requires is harmony within itself. If your style is rough, than so be it - but if you think it would be better to have cleaner lines, then work toward that. It isn't a requirement.

Think about what YOU want to see on that paper (or screen) and make it happen. Don't feel obligated to master someone elses technique if it is not applicable to your style.

And you wonder why famous artists are not always the same? I do, i think everyday on what i should be like, i then seem to realize that you should always have your own uniqueness to your art. Thats how you become liked, by having a different style than others.

Keep on what YOU like and enjoy not others.

Btw i hope this helped bc this is what ive been through my 16 years of life.

hey, I'm sorta like you. I was heavily influeced by japanese cartoons and I would spend a lot of time on clean lines. Now, that I've begun lifedrawing 3 months ago my quick rough gestures have energy and character in the drawing. My long studies are all cleaned up, it feels more like a photo or a graphic. See below to see what I mean about clean art.

I'm using a non-photo blue pencil to draw the construction or gesture of the cartoon, then I use dark blue to outline it with 1 clean line. The reason in those scans you can't really see the light blue is because it's not suppose to show up when taken a photo of, or when scanned. In my sketchbook they have alot of feeling to it, it feels like they are alive, and moving on the paper.. I dont know how to say it, but now it looks as if they are just a picture. But yeah, that's my approach to "clean" lineart. I use a non-photo blue, and go over it with another colour, in this case, i'm into blue. ^^

clean, and sketchy lifedrawing:

If u were going into technical illustration then it would be mandatory for u to draw perfect clean lines. other than that, do what u feel looks good! i like to be able to draw super duper fast instead of doing long studies ^^;; Hopefully these drawings help u decide how you'd like to draw like.. though i'm not very good!! :nohope: I'm just a newbie that started art this year. just draw draw draw!
