i'm starting this sketchbook after a long absence....work has been very interesting and demanding...
i'm curently an art director on one of number of films under production at dpsi (digital production solutions israel).
I wish i could unvail some of the stuff i'm doing there but we all know that's a no no!;)
until then i'll try to post a s much personal stuff as i can.

this sketch was done very quickly...most of the time went to figuring out what kind of feel i wanted from my brushes...done in ps.

hi all

It's been a while...but I got some new stuff to share

the latest batch is from a project i did recently...very quick stuff I only wish i had more time.

C&C's are most welcome so please don't be shy :teeth:

Njoy!

The Idea:
Imagine a world where religious wars are not fought by armies of soldiers but rather by the groups who,
through history, had worked behind the scenes,
the churches, the mosques and the temples.
Armies of priests led by bishops and clergy, muezzins and high priests, for once going out and fighting there own war.

Imagine further if you will a covert Cathedral/train station,
hidden deep in the mountains of the russian republic of sacred church states, pumping out the most precious commodity of the war,
Holy water, Water from an ancient waterfall able to resurrect any fallen man.

Imagine what an army you would have, one that would never tire, die or stop until it is victorious. Praise GOD!

Cathedral Train Station

Each done in about 3 hours, Photoshop7

I wanted to explore the grand structure and visual combination of a church and a train station

http://www.gilrimmer.com/images/trainstation-01.jpg

http://www.gilrimmer.com/images/trainstation-02.jpg

Russian Cargo Train

Done in about 6 hours, Photoshop7

With this design I was inspired by Russian churches,
the hexagonal boiler, the onion dome chimney and the water vessels used in religious ceremonies
http://www.gilrimmer.com/images/traincolor.jpg

Russian Cathedral Officer and gaurd

Each done in about 2 hours, Photoshop7

I wanted to design white military outfits, white symbolizing purity, which is the Irony of all religions,
preaching purity with the word and yet always holding the sword
I was specifically inspired by Russian clergy robes and russian army uniforms.

im really enjoying your style....keep it up..only one suggest..no crit...drop the shadow down a little harder...but it seems like you like to keep things smooth in texture so it really doesn't matter...insirational work..keep it up..seriously :yayca:

this is one of my favourite threads already, man, as its the little bits of backstory are great fun to read and really add to the picture!!! I love your art of course, too!!

please keep going!

PS: sorry about your job...what may i ask are you going to do now, and does that mean that you can post the stuff you were working on professionally, as it probably wont be released now??

Incredible. Excellent story, idea, and conceptualization. You are first rate, bro. I think I'll make a Church of Gil, and we're going to storm the world in your name.
   :uzi:

One tiny little crit. The shoulder stock on the cannon the last soldier is holding doesn't make sense for a weapon held only under the arm. Like I said: tiny crit.

Anyway, please keep this stuff coming.

this is fun!! :teeth: 10x everyone for the replies.

O D T: no worries dude... I'm working hard on getting myself noticed!
I got one positive replay from canada... I'm sure there'll be more
Sometimes having the studio you work for close down is exactly the swift kick you need in the behind, to get moving and try your luck at something more challenging.
No disrespect to working in israel, the market is very small and my possibilities of bettering myself in this perticular field are very limited to non existent.
But enough whining :bashful: on to better things!!! (and yes... I'll be posting some of my stuff from work real soon)

auden100: you are promoted to general in the army of the lord! congrats ;)
I had this idea of an insane type of assault rifle either held at belt hight as seen or brought to shoulder hight for more precise single bursts.. more along the lines of the m-16 (although mine is much more kickass!!! )

Sheesh. Pull back the badass a little, dude. I'm getting jealous.

The textures and pen work give that last one a very N8 Van Dyke feel. Intended or no?

Checked out your website too. Great stuff all around.

As for crits: as soon as I see something wrong I'll let you know. This shit rocks.

gil
January 12th, 2005, 06:36 AM
auden100: dude 10x!! love that you keep coming back...I feel a bond here man...(long stare, soap opera style <3 )

About the N8 Van Dyke feel, you are 100% on, and being the block head that I am :dur: , I forgot to add that small but very important detail....soooory :^^;: I visited his web site for the first time yesterday and was so exited by his style, I went for a little homage... :teeth:

Stay tuned for the next episode of me sketchbook!

Eyal: It's probably a pole fish I'll take your word for it by the way your name sounds very israeli...could it be?

auden100: no prob dude, for a regular visitor like yourself I'm always ready ;)

brkofdon: Thanks, your a 100% right on the chest remark
I noticed it but decided to go on to the next one,
this sketch was supposed to be very fast and I didn't want to get into stuff too much.

Glad you're back. Nice little additions.

Little comment: The lighting on the devil is really nice, with the exception of his eye. the reflection is in the completely wrong spot. you've given the eyeball a top light. It definitely draws attention to that focal point, but perhaps the wrong kind of attention.

Here's another quickie done in about 2 hours after playing Ratchet and Clanck...I wanted to do more of a "kids" oriented character. got carried away on the colors, a well you live and learn.

hi all

I felt I was neglecting my drawing skills with all this photoshop work, so for balance to be maintained I added a sketches (http://www.gilrimmer.com/sketches.html) section to my website and I'll try to do as much of them as possible. Here's my latest:

Seamother, A sea giantess. She's so large that barnickels have settled on her course whale like skin.
The sea always conjures up fantasies of the perilous unknown,
in this case the terror of the seas fell victim to a much more terrible foe!

Jokisalo: Thank you.

Hi all

Here's some stuff I scribbled Recently...I'm so rusty it borders on the criminal :^^;:

I like the chubby soldier dude...I think I'm gonna go into designing him a bit more...

that soldier with the gun is ridiculous

auden100
February 7th, 2005, 06:05 PM
hey, man. looking good. that chubby dude definitely has character. Is he for the theocracy world concept you were developing earlier, or just a random idea?

That central masked figure is creeping me out. Anyone sportin' a chin that long has to be pure evil.

I've rediscovered the pencil! :cheerleader:

For the last couple of month's I'v been working hard on photoshop...so hard in fact, I got so frikin' lazy my pencil work began to suffer!

I'm having so much fun the last couple of days since I've been forcing myself back into drawing shape.

Anyway, I'll be trying to post more pencil work.

Eyal Thanx dude...I love the little guy too.

auden100 my man, you gave me a great idea...maybe I will place him in my churchyverse...good one!
