Maybe you need a bigger library? When I look at my old stuff it's quite apparent that I resorted to primitive shapes and was unable to fill in any meaningful details.

If you make studies of a lot of things you'll get a bigger library of shapes you can use and combine into your own designs. And it's also easier to interpret happy accidents (random lines or mistakes that looks like something) into something that works.

The early amoeba (rough silhuette and composition) stage of a design is very important. When the viewer first glance at the image, this stage is what s/he'll see. The details are of subordinate importance and often just exploration eyecandy (but necessary since we like to look at images at a reasonable size and for more than just a second).

When doing perspective (and new at it), doing a quick perspective grid / guidelines can help. It can just be a few lines, the rest can be interpolated / guessed.

Prom speaks wisely

also, look at some references of buildings to get an idea of what to do next. The more references you look at, the less you need to depend on them down the road.
