hello dave... dont be so hard on yourself, there are some good things going on here.

As far as the crits I would say offhand that its too busy. You have a lot of stuff going on. Your focus seems to be the fireflies but you aren't doing much to pull them out. the texture on the bottom of the pond needs to be whacked or made softer. (actually as I'm looking at it I think thats the water texture.)

the plants look strange, I can't really tell where the stalks end and the leaves begin. Maybe some space between them would do you good back there.

the night sky is nice but your starfield needs to be more populated. Your moon looks ok but lacks depth, probably a little work on the texture would fix that up.

Lastly your composition is way too heavy on the left side, maybe some more flowers or clouds toward the right would help to even it up a bit.

hope this helps. :)

Its a good start, your compostion is good. To improve this picture id say work on the lighting. It seems you only have one light source. Look up lighting techinques (rims, fills, etc). Also one thing not to forget when lighting is use "falloff". Try a blue spot light high above lighting everything. Use a directional light comming from the back of the grass giving them a moon lite rim light, try whiteish blue. And put fall off on your yellow point light.

Other than that just keep working on your modeling and texturing dont be so critical cause everyone starts somewhere, have fun...
