Hey guys. Haven't posted anything in a while, so I thought I'd put up some sketches I did last night.

I have a question: Are these "finished" enough to be useful as real concept art? I can whip these out pretty quickly, so it would be easy to fill up a portfolio with stuff of this level. Or does there need to be a higher level of draftmanship involved? I suppose what I'm asking is: if you had a choice between a portfolio showing a greater variety in design, or a portfolio showing a higher degree of draftmanship, which would you choose?

Anyhoo:

C&C always welcome and apreciated. If you guys like them I'll post more as I make them, I'm sort of on an RPG kick at the moment...

Hi Tedsuo,

Like the drawings, you have placed your characters very well. The Scientist - full of knowledge, old with a sly look; Devil - quite pompus and fat, he looks like he is a minion for some bigger and greater thing, cute though; Lost Girl- hair in pig tails, toes pointing inward sad expression; and your Hero, confident and smiling. He looks young as most heros are expected to be, he has a Final Fantasy feel about him! I'd like to see him finished in colour if poss! There, that's ma crit! I find it's always good to get your ideas out as soon as poss. You may have tons of ideas floating round in your head and to get them down on paper gives you more room for more ideas. I suppose your sketches are 'finished' enough for concept art - I'm no expert! But I think you should add a little colour to your characters to give more depth ie. surroundings, light source/direction etc. A single colour marker for depth and shadow and use white paint (or a tip-ex pen) for highlights.

In reply to your question, (designs or draftsmanship) I'm not too sure. I'd say abit of both. I must say, I'm pretty stumped....you got me thinkin' though...

I have been doing some sketches of ma own, for a game I hope to make real one day. It would be a platform kinda game and I did these last week. Check it out, see what you think...(the link should work, if not, Soz)

Anyway, keep up the good work, post some more pics!!!

PEACE

Thanks guys. I definitely agree they could use some color. I still working out a method of coloring that's both fast and satisfying. Tekura I checked out your sketches, looks like a funny idea for a platformer. But then, I'm always looking for an excuse to smash eggs with a hammer. :)

I got hit by a ton of work this week, so I haven't had time to draw. Hopefully I'll have some more stuff in a couple days. :(
