i just installed painter 6 and i cant even get into it because it says i ran out of free memory. I have 1 gig of ram for memory, theres no reason for it to not work. Am i missing something? Tried to reinstall many times.

What platform and what OS version are you using?

If Mac OSX try running Painter 6 in Classic mode.

If WinXP Home or Pro, try running Painter 6 in Compatibility Mode with Windows 98/Windows ME.

Install the 6.1 patch if you haven't already, just on general principles:

The Painter 6.1 patch can be downloaded from the Corel FTP server at:

ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Painter/6.1

Keep the file after you've installed the Painter 6.1 patch in case you need it again sometime in the future (that can happen!).

It's important to follow the instructions below exactly... all of the steps... to avoid problems when Uninstalling Painter 6, reinstalling Painter 6, and installing the 6.1 patch:

To Uninstall Painter 6, reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch, and create a backup copy of the Painter 6 default files:

1. Move any files you created to a new folder outside of the main Painter folders.

2. Uninstall Painter 6.

3. Manually delete any remaining Painter 6 installed folders and files.

4. Reboot.

5. Install Painter 6, and don't open Painter 6 even one time.

6. Immediately install the Painter 6.1 patch.

7. Reboot.

8. Before launching Painter even one time, create a new folder outside of the Painter 6 folders and name it something like "Painter 6 Default Files Backup".

9. Go to the main Painter 6 folder and copy all of the default Painter 6 files.

10. Go to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder and paste the copied default Painter 6 files into it.

Now you have a backup set of Painter 6 default files so when one of them becomes corrupted, which happens on occasion, **with Painter closed** go to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder, make a copy of the appropriate file, then go to the main Painter 6 folder and paste the copied file into it. This will save your having to Uninstall and reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch again if a file becomes corrupted... and save frustration, too!

Quote from Corel Knowledgebase;

"If the system has plenty of free RAM, then this problem may occur if your Windows page file, also called virtual memory, is set higher than 1023 meg. This problem is fixed in the Painter 6.0.3 update."

Note; rather than install the 6.0.3 update, run the 6.1 (newer) update over a clean install of Painter 6. It may also be possible to reduce the virtual memory on your system if you don't wish to update, or the patch doesn't do the trick.
