Hi Girls,
I've booked a room at the Galleria! I guess it's the place to be, I think i'll have a better chance of socializing with you all if I stay at a more workshop oriented place. Now, I'm looking for one or two roomies. I've sent emails to Willow-Whisp and Oogawa and if they wanna room there, the slots are taken, otherwise...?
Now I just have to book a flight.
Something's fishy about Sok N Wett. My feminine intuition tells me so.

You still rock, Sok. ;)

Now, do we know where we're staying, everybody who's in room numbah 1? I'm still trying to figure out some details before I actually purchase tuition, just so I have a better idea. I'm also wanting to attend the GDC, which is a couple of months after this event only, and in the same city!

And I still haven't found anyone to ride down with from Seattle... anybody know somebody besides Undertow who's doing so? If not, nova, have you booked your flight yet? :)

Slimeydog
November 5th, 2004, 12:09 PM
Awwww, Sok, you can so be one of the girls if you want to. I can't imagine anyone would mind. But, I'm afraid you can't come to the Naked Secret Girls Kissing Competition at all, and we'll be keeping our eyes out for you in drag, so don't even try, in fact, that's why it's now changed to the NAKED Secret Girls' Kissing Competition, so that no guys can sneak in because they borrowed their sister's Hello Kitty jammies.

Other than that, we're going to have so much fun together! Heeee, I'm excited to go.

Ok, Oomgawa and I are definitely rooming together at the Galleria. I'm gonna wait and see if Willow-Whisp is interested in rooming with us there. She hasn't been on in a while, so I assume she's been busy. Is anyone else interested in rooming with us, in case Willow can't make it, or has other room plans? Brief roomie qualifications:

*non-smoking room, but Oomgawa and I may be casually smoking elsewhere during the trip (for those sensitive to lingering smells of smoke).
*the room is going to be used soley for rest and relaxation. No partying IN the room, we'll do that elsewhere.
*the room has two double beds. two people will have to share a bed, not sure how we'll figure who gets their own bed...draw straws?
*3 roomies total, including myself.

Interested? Send me an IM or write it here on this thread if you want to be our roomie in case Willow won't be. Sorry if this sounds so formal! :dur:

UPDATE: Willow's with us! So this room's all full! Yay! :}

Hello fellow conceptart.orgianettes...

I - am - so - disapointed, that Sok.N.Wett is not a girl...

I read in the other thread that you'd kissed just 'one girl' and I was like "oooh, semi-lesbian activity...I could cop a feel from this bird...I'll share a room wit ya..."

But your a bloke....

Now that just broke my heart...

Hi there!

Okay, Im just totally absolutely new on this forum, even if Ive been in some kind of lurking mode from time to time(yeah I admit...)...Studies kept me far from the forums during a loooooong time...
So, Im French and I would LOVE to be there for the workshop - Im currently still wondering about this, going or not, enough money or not enough, work or no work, see what I mean... - that will be one of a hell of a complicated thing to organise but eh, the Force is with me...

I have absolutely no idea about how it costs concerning the stay at the hotel(is this the right word in English, LOL dictionnaryyyyyy!), but if someone could explane me all of this that would be great...
And btw I know that nobody knows me out there(dont be frightened, I dont bite, well, depends...LOL ;) ) but if I make it, add me to the list for the roomates ;)

MarieMJS
very ashamed for her horrible English...

Sok N. Wett

Molly - LOL.....sorry to dissapoint you, but i'm saving myself for that special lady. :)

Donkeyslayer - Oh hope the powers that be won't erase your post....lol, this room was sanatize a few days ago.

MarieMJS - Welcome to the board, alright i finally get to meet a lady with a french accent, always loved to hear them talk. We'll here's the answer to your question it's from this thread -

http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=31948

and to save you time here's Jason's quote on it.

Welcome to the best thread for hotel info around the SF workshop. :)

Here is some general info to get you through til we relaunch the site update.

The hotels we have negotiated with are very near the workshop. You cand find the info below....

Hotel Triton
342 Grant Ave (at Bush)
San Francisco, CA 94108

www.hotel-tritonsf.com
Phone 415-394-0500
1-800-433-6611 (US only)

20 double rooms (4 people per room)
$129 a night.

Galleria Park Hotel
191 Sutter Street
San Francisco, CA 94104

www.galleriapark.com
Phone 415-781-3060
1-800-792-9639 North America

30 doubles (4 people per room)
$129 a night

Both hotels are booked from Jan 06 (check in) to Jan 10 (check out)
if the workshop participants need to check in or out a day before or after, thats fine, just
let them know. they have to mention Concpet Art to get the rates.

They also need to figure out who is rooming with whom. one person needs to make a reservation and put their cc# down in order to hold the reservation. We do not believe cards are charged until you check out of the hotel after the workshop. If you need help finding a roomate for the weekend or want to figure out who you might want to stay with, you can visit the WORKSHOP ROOMATES thread located in this same workshop forums.

There are also hostels in sf which may be cheaper to a degree. 129 a night is a great rate in SF. You may also check with the local motel6, super8, days inn etc...to see if you can find a more affordable rate. The workshop is located in the heart of down town just off mission. We chose the hotels because of their close approximation to the workshop space.

This is the only workshop planned for the usa in 2005. We hope you can make it out to SF with us for what is going to be the biggest art event of the entire year.

Ugh... I'm bummed out. I'm looking in my calender, and the workshop starts RIGHT when my new classes for winter quarter start. I still want to go, but I REALLY hope that it doesn't screw my classes up, and I have no way of knowing in advance. I need to sort of assess the situation before I start buying tickets and tuition and stuff, but I'll get back to you ASAP, Laura. We register soon, so hopefully once that's over, I can e-mail my professors.

Sorry about this! I shouldn't have to delay too long. :S

Hey all

im staying at the Triton with Rkhon and Dirty_C, (both guys) but weve still a spot left. If any of yall havent a problem sharing a room with two partyanimal guys and a girl, drop me a PM. Were checking in the 6th and out the 12th.

heres "Layils Room Manifesto" as Dirty_C put it, so you know what to expect:

I, contrary to many of the girls going- and this is why im staying with guys- DO (for my part at least, this is of course negotiable between all of us) ALLOW: drinking, smoking, smoking , consumption of illegal substances (in moderaton of course), partying, sharing of art (a requirement), visits from fellow CA.orgians, and general mayhem in the hotel room, as long as the place doesnt stink or look like a cess pit afterwords. In other wise, be neat and considerate, but party as hard as you like.

no offense to yall of course, but i know that at least some of you are looking for peace n quiet in the hotel room. to each her own says I, but im more comfortable around the guys myself- too many years of being the only girl in a group of comicbook geeks i guess. If any of you feel the same way and are still looking for a room, come join us!

and to the rest of you, weve got some testosterone asses to kick in sanfrancisco! Represent! ;) :yayca:   :vodka2:

hi erm i need some input on this,

SHould i start making up a portfolio?? is it really all that necessary? or should i jsut stick with my sketchbook? Cause im not all that good yet. Should i bring my gouache paints as well?

nova
November 15th, 2004, 07:35 PM
hey dish'd,

last time at austin, there was a whole day for portfolio reviews by pros. besides that, if you want to get a job, you should absolutely have a portfolio of your work :) even if it's just personal art and you do it for fun, you could also bring it to get critiques of those pieces, and then know what to work on. so if it matters to you, it'll be worth it to bring it along.

bring your sketchbook and paints too, i'm sure you'll meet up with others who are gouacheing too!

Sok N. Wett
November 15th, 2004, 10:05 PM
I would too recommend bringing some portfolio pieces, they mainly consist of your best work, like Nova said you can get really good indepth crtiques. The more knowledge you gain, the more focus you will be on your artwork, and the better you will be as an artist. Yes bring your gouache and then you can teach me how to use em :P.

Seems like there's probably going to be 2 to 3 groups that are actually staying at the Triton hotel, some might swtich to the Galleria, just a heads up.

I'm a student at an art college here in San Francisco, and i'm looking forward to the workshops, and especially making some connections with all you coming from all over.

I've been in SF for about 3 years now, since the start of my college career. So i guess that makes me a local, and perhaps helpful :)

I'm a complete newbie to Conceptart forums..but i'd like to get past that.

Laura, my last class on Tuesday, Jan. 6 ends at 5... is it humanly possible that somehow, we could get a late flight, so I don't have to skip it? I tried really hard to get into that class, and if I miss the very first day, my seat could be taken. Do you know if the workshop actually BEGINS on the 6th, or if we're just checking in?

what sok said. last year i spent the day before the workshop travelling from seattle to austin, arriving in the evening. some girls came at night, one actually came around midnight, but they had a bed to crash in, so it was ok.

also, where do you want to room? galleria or triton? both hotels are blocks apart from each other, so if we want to visit kids at the other hotel, we won't have far to walk :D

Hi All! :^^:

I had my tuition taken care of a few weeks ago, and I'll be the ever so quiet gal hiding smiles of joy and admiration behind her sketchbook.

I went to artschool in SF (California College of Arts, *formerly* California College of Arts & Crafts. *giggles* no we weren't making macaroni necklaces and popsicle stick cabins :er: :confident ...) I think I will be staying with some of my former classmates, so I am not looking for a room at the moment.

But I thought I'd mention a public transit link that nearly saved my life several times when I was living there:
http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index.asp
This will plan your trip nearly anywhere in the Bay Area, tell you what bus to get on, where to get off, where to transfer to BART if needed, how much the trip will cost, etc.. It was invaluable to me, and I think it'll help a few peeps out. I didn't come across it in the other forums so post the link anywhere necessary. It's a life saver if you have access to the internet, and want to sight see, or get to any place in the city.

See you guys there!!

Hey girls in my group: Artkitty, Bloodstone, Egerie

I went ahead and booked us a room from Jan. 6 - 11 at the Triton (Galleria was full). It's under my name--Emily Gordon.

If this doesn't work for any of you, that's ok. I'm sure that we can pick someone else up to join us, shuffle people around, etc. if necessary.

Just let me know if you're in.

thanks :)

I'm planning on going from the 6th to the 11th, and I can book a room as soon as I find people to share. I sent the tuition in but it hasn't been confirmed quite yet. Anyone still looking? I don't want to have to room with boys. :blah:

Hmm, Tully, if it were me, I would probably book a room anyway. There's got to be a few people who are still undecided, who haven't made plans yet, or who will jump in at the last minute.
Plus, the guy I talked to when booking said they have a 14 day cancel policy, meaning you can cancel up to Dec. 23rd if you decide to make other plans.
ChromaticCodex might still be looking for roommates, I think, also.

Best of luck! :)
I'm sure it will all work out.

I agree, Emily. I'm talking to a couple groups right now, but if I don't get an answer from one of them by 9pm tonight, (it would be 5pm in SF) I'm going to book my own room and try to find some people myself. That's the plan anyhow. Thanks, I should see you there in any case!

Hey, guys... I'm feelin' the workshop blues right now, and I am teetering on the verge of not going. All of these cancellations, changes of plan and difficulty of my having the first day of some of my classes on the 6th don't help the matter. It also doesn't help that practically everyone in my family has a December birthday (including myself) so we're all going to be nice and broke after the holiday season. I don't know... it would help so much if I knew this were an opportunity I would have again at another time, and not something that may never happen again.

Anyway, rambling as I am, I'm thinking I won't make it this year. I REALLY don't wanna let the girls in my room down, but I've been stressing constantly about this over break and feeling nothing but worked up, and nobody's given me advice either way as to whether all of this is worth it for somebody at my level, still a sophomore in college.

Just thought I'd give a heads-up, in case I don't make it.

hey s,

honestly, what you come home with from the ws will make the sacrifices you make worth it :) last year i was able to go, and went broke for this thing and have not regretted a single moment of it.

your place in college is a perfect one to go.. at this point you're still shaping what you want to do after college.. the workshop will give you direction and a lot of people to talk to [too many people in fact! i was overwhelmed last year] about what to do, and what to study. there are all good things waiting for you, and it's an investment for the future. also, don't miss out on this one.. it's close to home, and the next one will probably not be any closer [and cost you more].

were you able to get a flight with kekai?

December 21st, 2004, 08:40 PM
Hey Sapphire, I hear ya. I'm a starving student too, but I think this is going to be an experience that shouldn't be missed, especially by aspiring artists. Although I haven't been to one of these before, I bet if you go, you won't regret it. As for being poor, I'm gonna be giving burned CDs to my friends and family for Christmas. That's it. Nothing else. My brother even gave me the blank CDs I need. In the meantime, I'm 3 months behind in my student loan payments, I got medical bills headed to collections, I'm driving without car insurance, and I'm paying for the trip with some crappy credit card card that is gonna be charging me 25% interest. But fuck it, life is short and I love what I'm doing, so I'm not even thinking twice about it all (even though maybe I should). This opportunity might not come again.

Sapphire
December 21st, 2004, 08:49 PM
Thanks for responding, Jason. I know it would be a great experience, and I want to go really bad, but I wish it could have happened at a time that didn't put my classes for next quarter in jeopardy. I've got my tuition taken care of, but almost nothing else.

I could get a flight there with kekai, but I haven't got a plan as to how I'm going to make it to the airport from B-ham with no car and a load of packing. I would love to fly with him and was on the VERY VERGE of buying the nonrefundable tickets, too. The problem comes for the flight home... he would arrive at 10:30 pm on Sunday, and I have classes the next day. I don't know how I could make it back to my dorm from Seattle in time. I haven't even planned my flight yet, or gotten business cards or my digital portfolio printed, but I should be getting that done soon. Every day I change my mind about whether or not I should risk going; I did go to the GDC last year. I wish I knew if other people had earlier flights back to Seattle, that would help.

By the way, if anybody has advice on how to best get your own business card design done, let me know. Kinkos was expensive last year and the cards were boring. :) I don't even know if they let you do your own business card designs with art on them.

I'm currently on three waiting lists for classes, so missing class isn't a good idea... also because somebody could take my spot in the class if I don't show the first day. If I don't play my cards right I won't even have an art class this quarter, and that's a real bummer. I'm trying for classes that I have the qualifications to get into as far as experience, but not as far as credits, and I'm getting very stressed out about that. If I go to the workshop I may have to sacrifice an entire quarter of art class, depending on what happens (though it's a slim chance I'll even get in).

It's just stressing me out, though I know I have no reason to whine about it. Fattkid's right about seizing a rare opportunity. I just have to make a choice and it's tough in so little time.

These Workshops really teach you techniques and principles that are just as valuable of 4 years at college....

But you should really re-read the testimonials....

skrubbles
December 21st, 2004, 11:55 PM
Saphire, that really sucks... honestly, if you have the money GO!! A lot of people that are going to the workshop are also going through stress and lots of BS to go... the main thing for everyone is being able to take time off work and still be able to afford to pay rent and bills... for me I have 2 rents to take care of because I had to break a lease that still has about 6 damn months left on it... so that's about $575 down the drain every month... but I'm still struggling and going. I got a way down there , I got a place to sleep and have roommates, I'll starve when I'm down there but atleast I'll actually be there :) So if you're gonna miss a couple days of school, room with people you don't like (btw you'll be spending more time at the workshop then with your roomies), go into debt.. A SHITLOAD OF PEOPLE ARE... but they're still going and they're gonna have a blast down there AND they are gonna GROW exponentially as artists and people.

sorry if that sounds harsh... I know I used some capital letters in there LOL... but seatiously I'm just trying to beat in the fact that people are going through shit to go down there because its more then worth it.

It already sucks that Sok and Nova aren't going... don't not go as well... THE WHOLE SEATTLE GROUP IS SUPPOSE TO GO! :)

Hey Girls,

@ nova – all the best with the project! Will miss ya :)

Sapphire – how many classes do you get in your next quarter? Because I think if you attend the workshop, the knowledge and experience you receive there may outweigh that of your classes.
Being on a waiting list for classes sucks, I can see the stress it would cause you. But after the workshop, you may change your mind about the course you want to do, and do something completely different. Just a thought. *shrugs*
- Have you spoken to the tutor of the course and explained to them you want to be on the course but attend the w/s first?
I dunno, maybe enthusiam can get you on the course too???
(I tried that once, it worked for me…:))

It would be a shame for you to miss the w/s, theres so much you will take away with you.
Don’t give up. Have your cake and eat it. Go to the workshop AND get yourself on that course….

Besides, I was hoping to meet you and the rest of the Seattle Sketch Group - The UK’s first Thunderdome Opponents…

The main thing is you should contact the adminstrators at the school and let them know of the situation....

explain to them what it is, and even give them the website address....
They should understand..if not fuck em...haha...

For instance i' might lose my job and i can't afford that, but i know this is a far more valuable experience then working for this dreadful place...

No Excuse....
YA HEAR ME NOVA AND SOK, NO EXCUSES.... :bashful:

Sapphire
December 22nd, 2004, 02:46 PM
Hey Skrubs. :) No no, I'm not worried about "rooming with people I don't like" or going into debt... I'll be all right with those things. When I went to the GDC I rode in a car to CA and got a motel room with two completely unfamiliar guys, one of which happened to be David York, and now we're good friends. :)

My main worry is my schooling, and I wanna get the most out of it that I can. The illustration teacher I need to contact hasn't returned any of my e-mails at all, so I figure it'll be impossible to reach him till things get going. (I guess I'm supposed to work tightly with him to get a bit more of a specialized education, since the illustration track has all but died at the school.) But yeah, one of my main excuses for going to this workshop would be the educational value it has. At the moment I'm going for it... have my tuition and will prepare and get everything but the plane tickets while I decide. Where are the testimonials, on the website?

Anyway, thanks everybody for advice. I do hope I see you all there.

if you want to, then don't think about how you can't go.. just do everything possible to make it happen! you'll know for sure if you can't go if it gets to the day before, or you get into trouble, or .. :O

as for business cards, kinko's did a beautiful job on mine. since i needed them before my employer got me my own, i made a custom one in photoshop and saved it out business-card size, 300 dpi, TIFF format, CMYK color. i even colored the background in photoshop because i was picky. all they did was grab the tiff, and i asked them to print them out as business cards. i cut them up [i could have asked for perforated cards, but i was running out of cash] and handed them out. so all you gotta do is come up with a cool design, burn them on a cd, and get them to print em out. if i remember right, the whole process cost me 30 dollars.

good luck!

cartoonfox : I know that my business card last year measured 2 in. by 3.5 in. That's 600 by 1050 pixels, I believe.

nova How many business cards roughly did that get you? I know last year I got far more than I needed.

bRyaN : Thank you!

600x1050?? thats huge!! ^-^
thats 8.3"x14.5" ...was your card portrait then?

2"x3.5" is 144x252...

*edit* woops, you where talking about 300dpi, right? ^-^
i cant have it that big as im using some images from my photobucket folder, and so they are small, if i enlarge them, they'll get all pixely and blury. so im stuck with small ones, maybe that why they come out kinda blury when i test print with my printer

i got 100 or so.. don't remember. approximately 1/2 inch stack, regular card stock.

cartoonfox: the card was 1067w 600h. [3.557in x 2in] 300 dpi so sapphire's got the right idea :bashful:

Nova and Saphire, it's a bummer you're not going to be able to make it...I see you all over the boards and I was looking forward to meeting you. Best wishes w/ everything.

So does anyone know what kinds of art supplies to bring? Just my drug of choice?...or do you guys know of anything specific that would come in handy?

Thanks bRyaN... :confident...speaking of portfolios, I wasn't going to bring one because I haven't done have anything conceptart-ish yet...but I would like to have something to bring to Monday's portfolio workshop...to get input on my work if nothing else. Would you mind looking at what I have and let me know if it's worth the time to get prints made? Thanks

No prob...
You have 7 days to come up with some designs...
Do 5 pieces showcasing the best you can do at the moment...sprinkle it with some observational studies and life drawings and you'd be good to go....

Hooray Saph...glad to hear you could make, you will certainly not regret it...

hey ember and bryan, speaking of portfolios.. here are some ideas based on last year's portfolio reviews, and forwarded advice from my own portfolio experience..

ember ~ be objective about your portfolio.. think about what you want to do, and what questions you want to ask the people critiquing your stuff. don't go crazy getting prints done for no reason. just be careful where you spend your effort.

for this workshop, don't go crazy and try do a bunch of rad pieces at once. unless you're a genius, you will not be able to create your best pieces in 5 days :) it takes a long time and effort to develop a strong portfolio.

so if you're pushed for time, go for a few things you'd like to get a critique on, like portfolio layout, presentation, individual pieces, or your career direction [what you want to do vs. what's in your portfolio], and put all your effort into those. these things definitely affect the quality of your portfolio. so, the thing you bring to the workshop for critique can vary. unless you're seriously applying for a job, spending only a week putting something together is ok.

but on the other hand, if your're absolutely sure you're not going to go for a critique just yet, don't bother with getting it ready for the workshop :) save your effort, and get inspired instead ;) [you will!]

Nova, thanks for your suggestions. No, I'm not seriously - or even whimsically looking to apply for any positions. I've only been drawing a few months. I'm just hoping to get good general info on portfolios. I've found that bringing something to use as a tool or reference usually helps. Honestly I have no idea where I'd like to go with my art...I'm just enjoying creating. But I hope this workshop will give me some ideas of what's even out there.

Yeah, I tried to put at least one or two good designs together and realized that I just need to do some studies instead.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it!

Hello Girls!

I have a place to stay, so this is just letting you know I'll be there - I guess we won't be so many girls and it's so nice to know some of you before hand through this thread :)

Looking forward mostly to the maquettes, and to filling up my sketch-book that I have payed way too little attention to lately...

See you all there, and a big hug to Molly for being so incredibly fast and texting me almost before I knew myself I was going!!

/Maya

(Now I need to get home and make some business cards too.. Darn work...)

Well after last minute frights, I should..will make it in time to the workshop... After a few hurdles thrown by the US customs, the magical and very industrious elves from the Canadian passports bureau should have a gift for me, minutes before hitting the highway to the airport.
I'll keep you girls posted, for entertainment value..

Aline, who'd laugh if it wasn't so darn stressfull ! :frustrated:

Edit #1 : Minus 2 days before flight :
I run to a friend of mine who's an engeneer (you need to have a professional to sign your stuff... and they need to know you for at least two years). Thank god we work at the same place ! I owe him a vodka bottle. :vodka2:
Executive meetings ALL day. Can't skip out on lunch. Can't make it to the gov office. So I call the helpline and ask for advice and confirmation that it is indeed possible to get a passport in less than 24 hours. It is if you have a good reason and proof ! A kickass workshop is a good reason. I think ! I just have to show up next morning when the office opens. That means 7:30 am. Just when I was getting back on this time zone.. :dead:

Edit #2 : Minus 1 day before flight :
Slept 3 hours, show up at gov office on 7:10am and there is already a lineup. Things go fast tho ; After an hour and a half, I'm out of there as they did accept all the papers and photos (whew!). The lady was even cracking jokes :)
Now I need to rely on my contacts to be reachable today :$ :$ Hopefully everyone will be accounted for and vouch that I ain't no terrorist. They're supposed to call me here at work if there's a problem. *gets butterflies everytime the phone rings*
And now it's the waiting game. I just realised I DIDN'T touch my portfolio... since 4 years... and have a shitload of things to do before boarding. Bah as long as I get there, we'll improvise later. Lookin' good lookin' good with cautious optimism.

Edit #3 : Minus 150 minutes before flight :
I just got my passport. Everything should be cool unless I fall asleep somewhere. I'm too old to skip a night ! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !
I had to share... therapeutic ;)
