Keisu1- I'll do my best with the posting, although I have the tendency to spend alot of time working and not show it to anybody.....and then it grabs me, and I have a whole bunch of stuff that needs to be seen. But I'll try....

with that in mind, here's the cover of a little personal side project comic of mine (WIP);

i think you need some more work on your faces, the bodies look good but it looks like you just slapped some lines together for a face, maybe this was your intention, but it just bothered me. :pirate:

nicolas
November 5th, 2004, 04:48 AM
thanx phlem117, I don't quite know which faces you mean. All of them (or just those out of the "locomotive story"(those were intentional))? It'd be cool if you let me know, because usually I try not to "slap some lines together", I could work on it if you clarify.... :teeth:

until then, here's one that I also did for my upcoming album. It's a Propaganda poster for a sort of 50's hero (it's kind of vague I'm still writing that one), and will probably appear somewhwere in the panel backrnds...

hey, that's some primo stuff right there...
i actually like the way you draw faces, very cool style and unique characters.
i don't like that last one, the lines seem insecure (especially in the torso-region..) and it doesn't have this funky flow that your other work is so full of. i hope that makes sense.. if it didn't i might just write it in german. :blahblah:

btw i love the panel on Rainhill_seite03.jpg where the guy says "die rocket!".. very awesome.

thinking maybe a few more tags in background that
give character a reason to be in the enviroment he or she in.
a few building and windows tell me he outdoors maybe
a can or garbage can or garbage truck tell me he
on a street sidwalk or in a alley or a roof top.
just mini minor clures to his were abouts.

character design is ther and sky background there just a hint of
clues of items in the mid range.

great stuff

I love the settings/staging with black

I also love "styled" faces...they put me more solidly in a place where I feel the dream of the illustrator much better than focused attempts at ultra realism .

Maybe that why CG character design needs to stay away from concepts like Polar Express and lean towards Incredibles....and other styles .

Even in Anime videos characters faces change with mood in terms of the way they are drawn...it can be funny...or threatening depending on the genre . Goldenboy does this a LOT in a cute way .

I guess that's why I rarely look at comics books anymore but still leaf through all the graphic novels .

Love your stuff....I hope you make big money

Me again.....

@living rope - Merci !!! :confident

@crunch - thanx man....

@Darrell Bowman - You know you#re probably right abozt the backrounds, sometimes I try to cheat my way around doing backrounds if I feel they aren't totally necessary for the character.....since alot of these characters appear in stories of mine (where usually there are bakrnds), I tend to let the viewer "piece" it together.....(boy, did that just sound like an excuse, or what). Anyway I'll try to keep it in mind, Thanx....

@slimeydog - first of all thanx, as for your question "I'd love to know what the basis of the stories are about.", I'll try to answer that; It varies. The Metropolis 7. stories are basically sci-fi, I was asked to do a comic for a German anthology and I had just watched Metropolis (fritz lang) which is where the title comes from, but my stories are not a hommage to anybodies Metropolis(there's a bunch too, Tezuka, Schuster& Siegel, etc.), it's more of a metaphor for a city(if that makes sense), after the story was published I got offered to do an album for the same publisher, with a collection of Metropolis 7. stories. So, it evolved to this stage where the only thing connecting the stories is the city itself, outside of that anything can happen Superheroes(i'm writing that one right now),lovestories(see above somewhere), Detective stories(also above), etc......
The story above with the engine was something completely different, it is a story about the "Rocket", an engine that was a landmark in Locomotive Technology(at the time), it was also published in Germany in an anthology with some very talented artists (uli oesterle, mawil, ulf k., and many others )I din't know why I'm in that anthology...maybe the editor had pity :bashful:
Anyawy, I hope I could sort of answer your question without sounding like an idiot......

@skidfrog - I hope we all make big Money...chi-ching

ok, here are the first 4 pages of that cartoony story i wrote about somewhere up there(the Picolo cover), I don't know if this is your cup of tea, but I rather like them... about 1,5 months old, haven#t had time or muse to continue yet, but I definitely want to finish it.

Hi this is about the comic,
the second last row where he opening the letter.
not sure what he opening it with could be he vacuming the letter.
need a better tool description. the next frame the sun beam
behind his head may not be the best symbol. because the next
frame he sad so maybe a sun burst symbol might be confusing
maybe a symbol closer to what he thinking might pull it off.
the comic excellent ur getting weak in the little surrounding stuff
middle importance stuff.

i had a teacher do a illustration and the guy a dective in the twenties
and i said why he wearing a digital square watch for not invented yet.
but his reference he took that what the model was wearing so
details details.
but i know getting it down on paper is totally brain work
and trying to be good at like ur trying is draining.

great stuff

Beautiful work, Nicolas. You have an excellent sense of style and rendering, and i love your handling of shadows. Your line work is very crisp.

Although i agree with phlegm... i would say it a different way....

The bottom panel in your comic, where the detective(?) is pointing a gun at the boxer.... the panel to the right of that is a CU on his face. The right eye seems a bit too far to his right, and slighty too high on his face.
The same issue is on the comic cover, with the left eye this time being a bit too far to his left.
...and on the angel child on the single panel. His left eye seems the most off in terms of anatomical perspective...
..and on the "desert fortune" angel where her left eye seems to be way off in terms of placement.

This issue is hard for me to bring up because it seems to be tied into your style. And i'm ALL FOR YOUR STYLE, i simply love what i see. But i think that in some instances where you go for a more realistic look, the placement of the eyes is off.

Great stuff, though. I'm curious what you use.

Just my two cents,

~milo

Hello all.....

@Pesmerga - tanx, the nudity? It's actually just those angels having sex....sorry if you expected more, but that's why I wrote "sorta". I just put the whole nudity thing there to not get in trouble with the admin., not to lure you in with false pretense.....

@coro - thank you very much.

@Living Rope - Thanx. Yeah, Chris Ware is the shit!!

You're in my links already as well :confident

@MrMooTheFirst - I'm starting to believe you have a point there, although I don't see it (the eyes I mean...). My roommate, who attends artschool with me, says that sometimes as well "hey you're eyes are a bit off", but I don't see it......Maybe I'll have to look closer in the future(although on the angelkid I do see it- maybe there is hope for me afterall) :[

As for what I use, pretty much everything that flies around on my table; graphite, charcoal, pencilcrayons, gouache, ink, brushpens, etc...and PS of course...

thanx for your comments,

very nice work friend, as a cartooning major i am happy to see some sequential art around here.

very nice compositions and dynamic use of blacks to greys. the second to last panel on the comic set it my favorite, excellent composition and it led me right into the next panel. on that same page however i did not like how you gave such a small panel for the fellow being thrown. thats a big motion for such a small panel and i dont believe it worked. when i read it the first time i practically ignored it.

the page where he enters the bar i dont believe fully attracts me because the figures all seem slightly floating and not quite relating. the first panel on the page just upsets me, i dont know why....it could be the anonimity and confusion whe i see the robot and the off angles of the fellow on the ropes. also the two heads on the ground seem thrown in.

page three is pleasant, nicly combined techniques of inky smear with the first panel, with the retro of the second, the graphically appealing 3rd and fourth. the moody, the cheesy/awkard, the slick.

good morning... :rendered:

@ Sonnenkind - lol....Thank you. Yeah, I know Bilal, my roommate is a really big fan, but for some reason I never liked his work much. I was always a Moebius man ( and actually Bilals early work is very reminisent of moebius, and those were the ones of his that I did like....hmmm.)

@ Oliver23 - thanx, man. I think you mean Dave McKean...( Neil Gaiman is a writer, who has worked with McKean on some graphic novels :bashful: I'm a fanboy....)

@ qstom - thanx dude. I like the pink robot too (I still have to write that story, thanxs for reminding me... :confident )

@ conor - Thank you for your thoughts, I really appreciate them. Storytelling is so complex, I don't think I'll ever stop learning! It's always rewarding when the flow works, but it's hard work getting all the elements right so that the reading flow works properly, and the important parts get enough emphasis ( at least its hard work for me :bashful: ) Whats even harder is finding someone around to give you helpful advice on the subject...

sorry it took me so long to respond to some of you, but I've been working on some stuff, and let this thread slip.... I'll try not to let it happen again.

I am curently studying grafic design and only need one more year to go.

I think you mis understand the comic, its about a guy who is vacuming his living room and when he tries to vacume under a cabinet, something gets stuck infront of the vacuumer, he pulls the vacuumer out under the cabinet to see what is blocking the air. So he removes the paper paper that blocks the air, and looks at it, in suprise (visualised by the sun thingy behind his head) he finds out its an old photograph of his dead parents and starts crying.

Darrell Bowman
November 25th, 2004, 12:43 AM
Hi

i think when the paper is being removed from the bottom
of the vacum cleaner there is a line going up from his
knees to his crotch and this line is right thru the square
do hicky of the bottom of the vacum.
better to remove that line so it looks like a retangluar shape.

also on mom and dad picture maybe some were it says
love "name " from Mom and Dad.
or just mom and dad.

also sun burst on head is a happy type of symbol i think maybe
there another symbol that shows shock or make it not so equal
spikes.

i think it great stuff and it from the heart when i help out.

Wow Nic! You've really blown me away today, you're work is really beautiful.

There are various opinions on your drawing, line styles and backgrounds but it seems from all the work you've posted and from all the work on your site that you can do anything.

I personally really like your angular style, it sits next to influences like Dave McKean, Jamie Hewlett, Ashley Wood, Brian Wood, Mike Mignola, but has it's own European style.

Thanks Nic, I hope you don't get too down on your work, particularly during this hard time.

All the best.

Seriously, your style is like all my favorite artists/influences rolled into one. You're like the artist i want to be...actually i don't know what to do.. because your art is better than what i dreamed mine could be if i worked and tried to pull all my fragmented influences into one. I don't know if that makes sense, but really i'm flabbergasted because you draw like i have always wished, like you pulled your style right out of my minds eye.

HeyNicholas,

I really love the pen&ink. I've been drawing comics for a while now but have always been better w the pencils than the inks. You really have quite a skill there.

I'm curious-What are you using for the inks?
Is it a fountain pen( the ones that you dip?) Microns? Also where did you get those cool dot patterns that your using for some of the grey tones?
Right now I'm looking to improve my inking so any advice would be much appreciated.

I do have some publishers interested in my graphic novel and may not be able to ink the work myself-would you be interested in partnering up if I get a deal? Just a thought. Its hard to do both pencil and ink. You can see the project at http://www.girrion.com.

My email is lintern77@hotmail.com if you rather contact me that way.

Keep up the good work-Tom

Thanx a bunch, Guys!!
@ PetePARKER - LOL. That's the first thing my Roommate said;"Man, that looks like 3D!" I guess I overdid a bit.

@Snotboebel - tanx, Max Payne is a cool game.

@Rorz - I wish I COULD do everything!! :^^;: Yeah, I'm a big Hewlett, Mignola, Ash Wood fan....I guess it shows. But that ok.

@ - strych9ine, stiocray, PhatTexta - Thank you, you're making me blush :^^;:

@tlintern - Tanx. I'll try to quench your curiosity; I usually use regular old inking nibs (similar to a hunt 104 crowquill), and brushes, as well as brush pens....I took a pic for you....My Ink tools (http://www.nic-klein.com/images/Flix/pens.jpg)

As for teaming up, I'll have to say no to that, here's why. I checked out your comic (looks great BTW, reminds me of Miyasaki), but It's not quite the thing I'm into, I'd probably do more damage to your pencils than anything else. The second reason is, that a while ago I did a "graphic novel" with two friends of mine, in which I took over the inking chores. And inking those 72 pages is gonna last me for a while as far as inking someone elses work. Sorry. :\

As far as inking tips; the thing I try to keep in mind while inking is that it's not merely tracing or embelishing your pencils, It should be a whole new dimension/drawing that you do. By that I mean, don't let your inking be dictated by your pencils, add something, or take away in the process....But I guess its a question of what you're going for.

'til next time,

NIC

Nicolas,

Thanks for writing back and thanks for the pic of your inking stuff. I'm curious-do you recommend any brand of those pens? And do you use the pen brushes just like a normal brush?

Also what are you using for those dot patterns in your comics? Are they digital or overlaid ontop of your actual art?

And finally -what is that white stuff called?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but i got this inking stuff down!

Thanks-tl

Aleksi - thanx very much! I'm a fan of your work, which to me is really inspiring. Kudos.

tlintern - Yes I would pretty much recommend you any of those brushes. It comes down to what works best for you. There really is no right or wrong. Arthur Suydam (Cholly & Flytrap (comic))was asked once if he used any special paints for his work, he answered "I exclusively use the cheap childrens watercolors that you get a Wal mart, because they work best for me." Sometimes a brand name isn't always a guarantee, as long as it works for you- go for it. I however use a Pentel brush pen. And I use it as I would use a regular brush.

Those dot patterns I use is are screentones/zip-a-tone. Before I had a computer I used them analogue (which is a pain in the ass). They were(and still are) used in B&W work that goes to print, becuase when you print B&W art, the printing process doesn't allow you the use of greyscale as you would get from example a pencil. You can only print 100% blacks, therefore the dots, depending of how small (and spacing) they are, create the illusion of grey. It is used still in Japan (or mangas in general), I use it however to get a kind of "retro" feel. You can do it digital as well (much easier IMO). I have a whole bunch made up (different sizes/greys) which I then lay over/under my lineart and then either erase/"cut" away.

Here's a great tutorial by koro on how to do it by hand (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=6823)

and last but not least, the white stuff is called "white out". regular 'buy it everywhere' white out....you can use opaque white goauche or anything that covers up your ink, but I kinda got stuck on white out :$

cheers,

NIC

here's a link (http://www.comicbookpros.com/thompson/art_booflu.asp) to Jill's work. Some of your face construction and line quality reminds me of her work.

I am new here too. I like your work. Someone commented on the faces being plain, but I think they are great.

Thanks again for the info- I think I'll try to do a google on zip-a-tone. Maybe I can find some online. They seem like a pain in the butt to create.

I forgot perhaps the most important question- what kind of paper do you do your comic book stuff on??
Before i got into comics I used to use India Ink on paper. I would dillute to get a grey wash- it worked well but the paper always got wrinkly. So are you working on bristol board?

Thanx for the link Amish, thats some cool stuff!

tlintern - for ink, I use 200 gram Römerturm universal paper. And, most papers will wrinkle (to some dergree) when you put wet media onto it. There's a simple solution; tape it down before you work.

Sehr sehr gut!

I need to review my German just to read all you've written in your first comic series. I could only pick up about 30%.

You are a talented and inspiring individual. I look forward to seeing more of your stuff in the coming days...
