this beautiful painting (it's only a detail, I think)
its scary as well
people being burnt on a cross, feet first...

people about to be devoured by a lion...

good times at the Gladiatorial games! :D

It's the Christian Martyrs' Last Prayer by Gérôme. Here's (http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/art.asp?aid=9) the link for ARC's main page on him.

sorry for the "X" man, it worked for me and apparently worked for Elwell

and yeap! Thanks a lot Elwell!! :) (I had a feeling it was going to be you to give the answer)

Wow, so there's more than just a lion...:D
another question. It seems that crowd is trowing molotov bottles at the people on the cross to ignite it. Is that true? ;)

in the movie, Gladiator DVD, they had the deleted scenes and one of them was a scene where a lion was about to eat this mom and her child in the gladitorial arena.
Maximus was in his cell and had a good view of the mom and her child. The child looked at Maximus and dropped a tear, right before the lion climbed onto the child, slowly, frigtening...

Nah, I was curious so I cut-and-pasted. You can't remote link to ARC's images.

Looks to me like it might be a flaming arrow, but either way I wouldn't look to Gérôme for historical accuracy. For instance, his painting Pollice Verso is largely responsible for the idea that "thumbs down" by the crowd meant death, but there's considerable debate about that among Roman historians.

hardcore man

Then my latest image would be a big "X" as well

I was just marveling at the lighting in "Pollice Verso" :D Fantastic
As far as historical accuracy, my philosophy is that if it looks "good", then its all good in my book.

But now the real question is, would it be worse to die 1) eaten alive by big cats, 2) burned alive while being crucified
