in the movie, Gladiator DVD, they had the deleted scenes and one of them was a scene where a lion was about to eat this mom and her child in the gladitorial arena.
Maximus was in his cell and had a good view of the mom and her child. The child looked at Maximus and dropped a tear, right before the lion climbed onto the child, slowly, frigtening...

Looks to me like it might be a flaming arrow, but either way I wouldn't look to Gérôme for historical accuracy. For instance, his painting Pollice Verso is largely responsible for the idea that "thumbs down" by the crowd meant death, but there's considerable debate about that among Roman historians.

As far as historical accuracy, my philosophy is that if it looks "good", then its all good in my book.


But now the real question is, would it be worse to die 1) eaten alive by big cats, 2) burned alive while being crucified
