hey there

okay, it isn't actually _the_ first acrylics piece but the first one i did "the right way" with thinking about color, palette and such and the paint actually doing what i told it to do :)

now, give me crits, crits and crits, please.
i dunno why but messing around with real paint is a much more rewarding feel than staying entirely digital.

thanks

I like it, although, I wish that the hair and just the eyes had a bit more definition, I love the rest of it though.

yeah it's kinda hard to break into fine art after drawing line art for a while. the eyes are a little too flat and anime-ish, in my humble opinion. i guess it could work but not without considering the round and flat dimensions of the face.

thanks :)

iwasink: i tried to give a few light to both of them but it failed due to the size relation: geki's smallest brush at hand - image size.
the whole image is about 20-30cm, really tiny.
my smallest brush at hand was a size 4 chisel tip.

j.peckham: originally, i intended to make the eyes not too much detailed (although a bit more would have been nice, if i painted it a bit larger) to stay within the slightly simplified, overexposed look.
didn't work, i guess :)
but hey, it's the first step to paint traditionally after starting the whole painting thing in the computer :)

well all i can say is that i really really like it !

and the "not detailled" style is good to me ... even for the eyes.

I like the edges of the hair and the textured background. S
he has a doll-like face. ("The gal's a doll")

I really like this piece a lot gekitsu. The colors and the brush strokes are stupendous. I don't particularly like the face but that's my taste. I would have liked to see it more anatomically correct then it would have a master's painting feel. Awesome work bud...keep it up.

luis: thank you very much :)

mcm: master's painting feel... well, i have to walk down the artist's way for a long time until i can come close to that, i assume. :)
as for anatomical correctness, there is a saying in germany: "it's like eating knoedel" (one after the other, not all at once)
;)

:chug:, mates

any technical ideas in terms of color and such, what to improve further?

Perhaps, as far as color goes, you could throw in some other sides of the color wheel. Maybe you could throw in some blue on her dress or around her neck as a necklace. Doesn't have to be blue but you get my drift. Push the contrast and color usage a little more. That woudl draw our eyes to her and bring more interest to the center of the painting. As of now she sort of slips into the background.

YEAH!

:D
oh mates... if you could only taste what original knoedel, kraut and roast are. plus a good dark beer... mmmmm you're missing something :)
ask mitch!

(was that a hint for me to paint a knoedel still life?)

edit: i played with the thought of painting the dress n cool colors. since i only had blue black...
i chose not to do too many thingsthe first time, though and mixed some umber in it :)
cool/warm contrast is on my list for the next one!

Yessss!! We should start a knoedel still life thread...although I wouldn't have access to them. You would have to send me a bunch in a box and hope they stay fresh. hehe :o

MindCandy - you can do knoedel yourself (sorry, gekitsu, for occupying your threat with this really off topic but I couldn't resist... ;)):

Boil 2 lbs of potatoes and mash them hot as smooth as possible. Mix it with flour and form knoedel. Throw into boiling water and let simmer gently for about 10 minutes. Hmmm, somewhere salt has to go in... :D
But beware: this is a difficult recipe even though it doesn't seem to be. Each potato reacts differently so you can never say how much flour you'll need until it feels right.

...off getting hungry... :D

Maybe the goth lady piece would have been stronger had you stayed with a cooler pallette. Also, adding a lighting source wouldn't hurt. The warm colors really don't do anything for the figure except throw her in front of us. There's no background, no clothing details, and not enough details just to leave it empty. You've got a good start. Keep it going.
