Hey Peeps!

We had a very good couple weeks with reservations for the workshop! I really thank you all for registering early. It really helps us to get this all done.

I was able to spend time with accountants and lawyers yesterday handling paperwork so we can move from simply being a non-profit and able to do business to being fully tax-deductable as a 501.c3. whee!

So on that note....I thought we could start to talk and discuss the workshop. If you have registered, this is your home base. The Workshop_Admin and the Pros from the workshop will be in and out of this thread answering any questions you may have.

If you are still waiting to register, please join us in here once you do.

Hey guys, I get paid anyday, so my tutition is pending atm but very soon :)

I've been smiling all day everyday because of this thing, and we are still months away... Cant wait!

Another thing, I know the SF transit system is really good, but my mom reminded me that when she was down there she rented a moped for like 10-20 bucks a day.. hah that would rock.

Let me know what you guys are planning on doing.
Cant wait to see you guys there!

I am there. Haven't posted a ton, but have been around.

I am a Ringling CA freshman and will be coming across the country with some other Ringling folk. Though flying down from Minnesota from Christmas with the family. San Francisco is the only North American city that is on my list of "must see" that I haven't seen yet. Chicago, Seattle, New York... blah blah blah but not San Francisco and I am dying to be there.

www.accidentalabstract.com is my website if you want to check it out.

thanks to all who have signed up or are doing so shortly. Takes a big weight off our back. Make sure if you know of other members whove registered already tell em to post up here so we can get a better idea of whos coming in terms of forum aliases.....

also i know a few of you guys are in sf, and there are some people from out of town (and international) arriving a day or two early. Maybe some sf locals want to get together with these guys and meet up, have a sketch, and so on. Theres no better time than now to branch out and make some new connections with people around the world.

Right now 'San Fierro' in the new gta is about the closest i can get to san francisco till january, so excuse me while i go indulge my friscan fantasies for a few weeks!!

How are the activities organized?
Will be a printed schudle of the programed demos and activities? Or we just have to walk arround and see?

I'll be paying my registration mid December. I'm really amped and have already announced that I'll be taking leave from the 5th-12th. I've been too busy doing more graphic design and art director related responsibilities than I have been drawing as of late.. as my day job consists of navy stuff, and night work is senior partner/director of visual concepts for ip development company. Jetpack keeps telling me to post my stuff.. with enough prompting I might start a DSB really soon, being that I know that once I start it I will keep up with it.

although I like Mike, he's embellishing quite a bit. I don't have crap to show in comparrison to 80% of the people on these boards. Hence the reason for the workshop, so I can learn from the true "Awesome" artists and start putting together something worthy of posting here. Thx for the compliment though JP.

Hi all, my name is Jennifer and this will be my first workshop ever attended! I'm really excited to learn as much as my brain can handle during the event. I admit, I'm a little bit nervous, too. I'm also NOT a professional, just someone who's leaning toward a possible graphics future, but mostly is a true lover of art. I've been drawing and painting since forever, and quite frankly, I'm sick of producing crap because I have no strong skills. It's my goal to change that and to finally be able to create the things I feel intensely about and see in my head.
I've paid the tuition and have lots of questions. I'm gonna read all the threads before I start asking here on the forums. Any advice and encouragements are appreciated from veteran workshop-goers. It will be fun to meet new people, too! :bashful:

I can't wait for this...excited already, can't imagine how I'll feel when I leave, or when I arrive before the doorway to the almighty workshop!

I really need this, I'm in the dark for artistic motivation out here. Its almost dead. Thats the worst, when you are out of school, but not yet in an industry job. Feel like I'm doing nothing, even if I draw all day.

But for now...money money money money... Thinking about taking a small personal loan out, so I can just get everything paid for now, and earlier.

Greetings from a lurker:

Well I just got the room reserved and the tuition paid. Only gotta figure out my flight dates. Being mostly self-taught and really interested in the concept art of sci-fi movies and games, I am really looking forward to meeting and learning from the instructors and fellow attendees at the workshop.
I thought I share some shopping locations for reference books or specialty art supplies in the SF area. I stumbled upon a good place to shop for Japanese Animation and Video Game illustration books in Japantown: Kinokuniya Bookstore - San Francisco Store 1581 Webster Street, San Francisco, CA 94115, U.S.A. 415-567-7625 http://www.newcolonist.com/japantown.html. Last time I visited the store, they were even carrying loose Copic markers (sketch and wide). Across the bookstore, there was a Kinokuniya Japanese stationary store with a good selection of sumi supplies, brush markers, Pilot-Hi-Tec-C pens, and Pentel Aquash water brushes and water soluble crayons.
For conventional art supplies: Utrecht Art supplies carries a good selection at reasonable prices.

And for rather exotic shopping: Great China Herb Co. 857 Washington Street, San Francisco, CA 94108. http://www.asianweek.com/2002_11_15/feature_goods.html
Where I found some good Dit Da Jow from the Che Sun Tong Co: "an ancient Chinese Kung-Fu Liniment for the relief from minor pain of muscle and joints, aches, sprain or bruises". Because you never know when a little Ancient Chinese medicine might come in handy ;) .

Only acouple months now... granted that time goes by without a civil war. I'll be the really pale and scrawny person, should be great. If you go to the workshop, then hang out and sketch with people, you've got about 3-6 hours to do your own thing, assuming it's not sleep.

Paid my tuition today and reserverved a room a couple weeks ago. Flights look pretty good, might even get a non stop if I'm lucky. Can't wait to see everyone again and meet some new people as well.

I do have a question about the hotel situation. I reserved a room at the "Exceedingly Groovy" Triton for our group but I plan on staying in san fran for an extra 5 or 6 days after the ws. If anyone knows of a cheaper hotel for the rest of my stay I'd greatly appreciate the info. I just need a clean bed and clean room with a fridge and microwave. I'm going to make a vacation out of it but there's no sense in paying $129.00 a night for just me. I'll be spending that on more important things like beer and vodka.

There has to be a Days Inn or Motel6 type place in heart of all the action but I don't know the area and I don't want to be blowing a lot on cab rides if I don't have to. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi All! : :^^:

I had my tuition taken care of a few weeks ago, and I'll be the ever so quiet gal hiding smiles of joy and admiration behind her sketchbook.

I went to artschool in SF (California College of Arts, *formerly* California College of Arts & Crafts. *giggles* no we weren't making macaroni necklaces and popsicle stick cabins :er: :confident ...)

But I thought I'd mention a public transit link that nearly saved my life several times when I was living there:
http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index.asp
This will plan your trip nearly anywhere in the Bay Area, tell you what bus to get on, where to get off, where to transfer to BART if needed, how much the trip will cost, etc.. It was invaluable to me, and I think it'll help a few peeps out. I didn't come across it in the other forums so post the link anywhere necessary. It's a life saver if you have access to the internet, and want to sight see, or get to any place in the city.

See you guys there!!

Cool Jason.. sounds great.. I've got Atmospheria and others staying at my place.. It will be a great time. my only regret is that we can't do it every day!

P.S. I just read my post from last night.. I guess it could be percieved as negative... (I made it at 3 or 4 in the AM) not my intention at all.. if tuition was 800$ I'd still try to swing it!

Something that might be helpful for anyone that didn't know-

When coming from the SFO airport to a hotel, i'd suggest taking a shuttle service. I'm used to using the Super Shuttle (blue van yellow logo) that charge $13.50..which should be cheaper than if you were to take a taxi.

The shuttles are on the main level, so you'd go back up after baggage claim.

Hope this helps :)

Just got my last major arrangements taken care of yesterday, so I'm definitely going to be there! I can't remember being so excited about anything before, so on the first day I'll be one of the many people with a psycho grin on their face.

Execute, are the shuttles on a schedule, or do they work more like a taxi? I'll probably be really tired when I get there, and waiting isn't my strong suit when I'm in that mood.

ExeCute
December 2nd, 2004, 01:31 PM
I don't remember looking at a schedule.. I think they just keep coming through the strip. It does work basically the same as a taxi...but

Since it's a shuttle and not a private taxi, they're gonna wait a few minutes to see if they can get additional passengers to fill it. But that's why it's cheaper.

There will be several companies to choose from though, so it shouldn't be a big wait.

I found a link that talks about shuttles through SFO, expected prices, company phone numbers.., and also mentions other modes of travel like samtrans busses, the BART subway.. it explains stuff better than i can.
http://www.sftravel.com/shutl.html

Says that a taxi will cost around $32+tip.

Hello everyone. Just a note to let people know I'll be there. I can't wait... I feel so lucky that this amazing event is happening in my hometown. I probably wouldn't be able to go otherwise.

I have a question for Jason or any other pros gonna be there. I'm primarily a 3D artist, who is very interested in 2D art as well. I've heard that some of the companies will be reviewing portfolios for all different kinds of positions.

My question is: would it be stupid not to bring a hard-copy version of my portfolio? I'm planning to bring multiple copies of it on CD to pass out to anyone interested.

Hows it goin,

after hanging around the website for awhile and getting familiar with the people who post on CA you naturally become inquisitive about what kind of individuals they are. You wonder if they like the same music as you, are they as motivated about art as you ? could there be potential to become friends with this person or these people ? I'v never been to a CA workshop before so I've always wondered about these things....

Until Now..the wondering stops

On Jan. 7th all my questions will finally get answered.

if there is a cool place to sketch, instructors, what are they? and other spots in san fran to visit, for some of us have NEVER been there.

ExeCute
December 23rd, 2004, 10:42 PM
some obvious places are
union square- there's a block that's kind of like a city park where lots of people pass through and you can sketch people loungin out in the daytime.
lots of shopping around this area. i go to sketch at border's there on powell since it's open late.

metreon/yerba buena- movie theater and cafes etc inside, lots of shopping here too, and an arcade. sony/playstation stores. there's the museum of comic art around here, and the SF MOMA is near as well..if you like modern art..

the wharf/embarcadero- nice place to walk around, and in the wharf area there's lotsa..touristy things to see, alcatraz is there too. and fat stinky sea lions.

the fillmore- on fillmore and geary st, there might be some cool bands playing there, i haven't checked.

golden gate park- probably what you expect, there's supposed to be a nice japanese garden there too, i haven't been there yet.

japan town- lotsa japanese type shopping to be done here, a nice pagoda area too. stationary store there has some art supplies.

china town- very busy and a little ghetto..

north beach- lots of restaraunts and porno

pearl- great art supply shop on market and mason.

utrecht- art supply shop on..near..180 new montgomery, i donno, it's right by AAU

flax-art supply store, expensive but impressive..with paper especially..market and valencia

the art store- van ness and..pine? around there anyway..

maybe i'll think of more later, ask me questions if you like

Is there any kind of a parking space around there? I don't mean on the street with parking meters but some kind of a public garage or any other public parking? I will be staying with my friends in Palo Alto. It'll be nice to drop off my car somewhere close to the workshop during the day.

Sorry, I'm from Tahoe. Big city parking always makes me paranoid. Up here if the engine is off - it's legally parked. A long as I'm not in the way of the snow plow :)

Hey, I've got a place at Tahoe :) although I live in sacramento. Anyways, unfortunately it seems parking is gonna run somewhere around 20 to 30 bucks a day unless you happen to have some friends in SF somewhere who know a spot where you can stow your car. My parents are being nice enough to shuttle me on up for the 2 hour drive so I can avoid the costs. I'd start searching the net for the cheapest parking garage you can find in the area if I were you.

it may be a bit late but..

CAUTION TO ALL FOREIGN VISITORS ! Make sure the US customs will accept your passport, even if it's still valid.
Example : My french passport which is valid until 2011 will be rejected (since october 2004). This version of my passport does not display the bar code on the bottom but the usual perforated codes. It's the "old school" format. Only way for french citizens to get in the US with this type of passport is to have a Visa and WILL have to get finger printed and have their mugshot taken then filed.
The newer passports, called "Delphine" type which, just like Canadian passports, display the bar code on the bottom will get accepted *from now on until oct 25th 2005*. After this date, you will be required to have a Visa and fingerprints yadda yadda.
The next generation of french passport will be Biometric and will allow you to get inside the US without a Visa or fingerprints etc. But it's still equiped with a biometric chip...

There you have it, so make sure you won't get turned around when you go to the airport. I was lucky enough to find out 4 days ago. Lucky because it should give me JUST enough time (read "hours") to take care of it.
So I hope I can manage to get my passport and meet you all in SanFran ! ;)

Oh shit, your goin KOZ? I doubt you'll remember me from AIPX, we had a couple classes together. And I was on Bobolo, constantly arguing with Nick or trying not to get caught up in the Avatar Scandal.

Heyaz,

I'm the new fool in town
and my sound's laid down by the Underground.
I drink up all the Hennessey ya got on ya shelf
so just let me introduce myself
My name is Hum erm... oh wait...

My name is Juan Rubio. On the 3d side ive been around a little doing games and film for a living. I was at the dealy in Texas and now im going back to SF for this dealy. I work in LA for a place called R!OT pictures now and Ill be one of the people looking to hire people for work and for some personal project stuff. If you have emailed me in the past for my personal project I need to get back to a lot of you because I have been ill/busy on some emergency projects for R!OT. Ill also be one of the guys learning to draw with everyone else. My traditional side totally sucks but ive been lucky to have access to some very talented matte painters who came over from the traditional matte painting side that have been helping me out of late. I still suck but they are making me paint some stuff at work now as well. Heh.

If anyone wants any critique on 3d items please let me know. Ive helped recruit for film and games before so I know what to look for. Also if you have any tech 3d questions or want info about SF lemme know as well.

Laters,
Juan

Hey KOZ, in case you didn't know, one of the current students at AIPX has set up a forum to act as a new kind of Bobolo. So far it has been much more constructive with less pointless arguing.

Aesthetic Terrorism (http://ghostmeat.localdemon.com/aipx/phpBB2/index.php?sid=53db809c5c67b1cc8e6005b498042919)

It'd be good to see you rocking the Self Portraits again.

Sounds good Tek.

How rude of me though... I totally forgot to formally introduce myself. My name is Eric Kozlowsky. I'm a predominantly 3d artist, and I've been working in the game industry for over a year now. I post from time to time...mostly in the Self Portrait thread. My 2d sadly gets neglected a lot. However my new years resolution was to change that. Thus I decided quite literally to put my money where my mouth is and go to SF for this life-changing event.

Get your uprock down and go from there. I think I still remember how to. :).

As long as you b-boys and b-girls let us DJ's have enough room at the front to check Swamp and others throw down its all good. :) Hopefully I can learn something from watching them showcase as I will be learning to get better with my art as well. Heh.
