What materials should I use for drawing from a cast? Should I use white paper and conte/charcoal or go with black paper and white conte? What kind of paper is best for this kind of stuff..

In this pic it looks like black paper/white whatever it is they're using hehe. Anyone know what/how the rod on their right hand side works?

it is black paper with white drawing materinal(notice the guy on the left is holding something white in his hand)... whether it's conte or chalk i don't know. as for the rod, i'm not sure.

Empty, yeah it seems he is holding something white maybe they used both black and white on white paper. I say this because if you look at the edges of the artist tape it looks like it got some black on it all around. The rod is used to avoid contact with the paper and you hand preventing it to the chalk to smear and it also helps you keep a steady hand.
oh yeah can anyone direct to a spot or website that has those type of casts?

that stick is so that they have something to rest there hand on when the draw, and so that they won't lean their hand on the surface and get it dirty. Its a tool!:D

www.statue.com has drawing casts, I got the one that loomis used, there's pics of it in fig. drawing for all it's worth. Loomis just used normal conte or whatever on white paper but his cast drawings aren't even close to as perfect as what the ateliers are doing.

the stick is a maul stick (sp) for resting hand.
the white stuff looks to be chalk or some pastel, the black paper might just be black pastel paper. there's alot of different ways of doing this. you can get some charcoal powder and brush it on to the paper (i had a freind that did this at college) and erase away teh black and start putting in your highlights with pastels. it looks pretty nice with practice. there's alot of ways of doing this kinda of stuff.

It could be shalk, conté bars or even dry pastels. I love working with those altho they can be a bitch if you make a mistake. Work *slowly*.
Ps: I absolutely love working in a black manner (on a dark canvas).

The stick in question is spelled 'mahl'. They cost between twenty to forty dollars for the wooden ones. The paper is probably a very dark brownish gray toned paper and they're using the sight-size method. The chalk is probably just white chalk and I would assume they're using black compressed charcoal as well for the cast shadow. The half tones are probably the tone of the paper being used showing through. It shouldn't be too hard to find a statuary store in France. Or maybe you can spray paint an object white...
P.S. Ted Seth Jacobs runs an atelier in France (L'Ecole Albert Defois). Perhaps he can recommend a source for casts in the area.

they tend to use a variety of vine charcoles and fix it in different phases using a workable fix.
conte is too unforgiving for such subtlety.
a variety of charcoles is a must...some are not dark...some move around...some hold their place....
