I like the mix of the cartoon and realistic style...but maybe if you add just, really only just alittle bit shadows to the eyes and mouth to link both styles it would be almost perfect...yet the face doesn't match to the rest, not in matter of style, it just looks like pasted...
Give it a try...

I love this style, reminds me of something ... maybe Steadman, with the spattering. I think this a finished image, if you were to start re-working the face, I think it would lose its charm. GJ :)

thanks for your comments guys. as for the face...i'm torn. there was a part of me that wanted to do a "realistic" rendering of the whole thing; you know, worrying about proper shading, how would the joints really work, etc. i did this little sketch in my note book without any real attention to those issues, just quick concepts to get my brain going for the final version. the problem is that i fell in love with the sketch and decided just to paint that.

Oh man, that looks fuckin cool! The splattering behind him looks awesome. I especially like the red highlights eminating from his heart. It really does look like the thing is glowing bright. The one thing that I think you may need to do is splatter a little black into the white brushstrokes on the left because the rest of the piece has some splattering, but not as much there. Other than that, you've got one awesome thing going for you! I can't wait to see the rest of the series! Great job!
