Weekly task thread?

Okay i changed the title of the thread, in hopes that others will see it more and hopefully respond to it. Below is what we talked about, but if tha's too much to ask from you pros, can one of you check the last two posts as of now by jester and myself? Thanks!


MindCandyMan and I were talking about how we would like to have someone from theses boards as a mentor. Why? because we are eager to learn, or at least I know I am. I have to get better, and I know that I could learn and work my hardest to impove my skills, if someone is willing to push me along. Too get a glance at my stuff, and skill go here! For example, if it's something as simple as giving me homework, per say, and making me stick to it, which I naturally would, and give me tips on how to paint,draw, or do whatever I am instucted to. The people that come to mind, that I would love to have as a mentor would be, but not limited to : Jason Manley, el coro, prometheus, Android, Sparth, Khangle, Jon Foster, and the list goes on for days....

Someone that is a pro and is willing to share and help a young artist at work here, Well here I am!!! like clay in your hands, ready to mold myself to whatever you want! artistically of course:p

until then: I will do masterpaintings, to teach myself to paint like the old masters. MindCandyMan inspired me with this master painting. I will post the w.i.p here. Hope to here from someone soon...

Okay...I'll be waiting for a response. BTW, anyone who's willing to help me out, and is willing to learn along with me. We could do this together, but lets save that for later, just in case no one chooses us to be a mentor.

Ok please note that this is only a suggestion and a opinion based off of my experiance it doenst mean its right for you but something id suggest that at least couldnt hurt !!!!

My suggestion would be to go and look up post at sinjun by spoodge demon (CM) Jason Manly capt flush garden etc just do a search for the athours these guys do great work as you know and often give excelelnt advice you can learn alot from them mullins did quit a few tuts this way especialy the color theory thread and color excersise justin sweet has a step by step at draw 1 2 3 .com as well also mullins and manly have a tut on gfxartist .com which have great tips as well ill post a few sights that you can get some good info as well maybe to help you i know you may have done this already im just offering some advice doesnt mean its good id use my time studyin a few of these sugestion if you havent though before atempting a repaint of seargents work ! think of it as a warm up to your seargent painting

It would be nice to have some real homework...I have to drop my drawing I class (I'm still taking figure drawing I)...I had to drop it because they were leading me down a completely wrong road. The third class (ok remember this is drawing I and most people have never taken up art in their lives) we are doing "impressionistic" pictures of a flower. I started drawing and my teacher comes over and says, "Hey that's too photorealistic...loosen up". Then when I started talking to the TA about what I was working on I mentioned Sargent and she got this cynical guffaw look on her face and said...well the bay city painters do this blah blah blah. They have no respect for the masters...they are actively not teaching the fundamentals to people who need them... This one girl did a phenomenal job of rendering out her flower and they were getting down on her because it looked too photorealistic. Nothing wrong with impressionism at all...but do they need to be reminded that Picasso could draw photorealistically when he was 16...those foundational skills are what made his later work so impactful. They are so ridiculous. Some real homework would be helpful that's for sure. I am bummed...I will take it next semester with another teacher I know is really good though. But till then...anyone with any ideas for homework would be greatly appreciated.


BTW - The TA mentioned that she was working on a piece of "video art" that she was going to do in Vegas. Guess what she is doing...she is getting married to this guy in Vegas (filming it) and then getting divorced as soon as they can. This guy has a girlfriend too...they are doing it for art's sake and to become one of the "statistics" to make a statement about the cheapness of marriage in America. I almost threw up in the middle of class. I almost spoke up but I left it alone...but at that point I knew I had to leave this class. She talked about it in class for like 20 minutes...I was so mad...wasting precious time.

cerreto_ : I have looked up all those things (great minds think alike right hehe) They are great great great resources! Don't feel at all like you are wasting space in a thread. That's awesome advice. Captain flushgarden is freakin amazing isn't he? Man those jets/planes he paints are INSANE!!!!

I found timo's site about 2 - 3 months ago too...he is a gem you are right...phenomenal skill but you don't hear much about him around these forums. He is AWESOME though...really good. Thanks cerreto!

Yeah tim is great ! he did a texture map for my good buddy martin krol on his site ! Truly inspiring guy personaly im a 3d modeler learning the right way to do 2d art i have learned more in the past 4 monhts 2d wise from friends on the net than i have in a lifetime if there is one page in a 50 dollar book that you can learn from man buy it thats the way i see it !


As far as capt flush goes he pumps them out at lighting fast pace as well ill model any damn thing for someone like him that can help me learn to paint better digitaly

What happened at your class is just Crap!

That's such a stupid reason. Anyways, I too want that homework, but until then I'm on my own. But i have a feeling that somone will help us out, I hope!

Thanks cerreto, I had seen some of those before, but ever since Jason Manley mentioned something about master copies, Its been in the back of my head, and I've been wanting to do something, so I'll take a stab at it, and learn through the process of it. Then based on what didn't work for me, I'll concentrate on those things that need help. But i really appreciate the help, my friend!

LOL no i make models ;) some times they arent half bad

Here is a example of what i do without any anotmical detail yet mostly just poprtions the neck and color bone are a mess at the moment after i finsh ears and feet ill start to give her anotomical traits to define shape better such as more shape in the legs arms etc

Actauly i think it looks like shit but its for a freelance job and they want to be able to morph it 1000 difrent ways the body is completly difrent form how i would model a female! personaly i like alot of curves and much more shape not so lankey lokking ! but thanks

I was asking for something similar in the Art schools section in November and got some valuable hints from Jason:

I think it all boils down to finding and solving tasks oneself (sort of a learning process, too) but a thread where the pros set tasks (maybe graded with a difficulty indicator?!) would be helpful for all of us who want to learn more at a faster pace.

I had checked that out once before and completely agree with that, but if this mentor thing that we ask is too much to ask for, I would also like a task thread to be made, where the pros give three different difficulty task's and give a deadline to finish it. Then grade those who entered it and maybe have a new one every week or so. That way, we learn on our own,, but with a little push by the pros; Since they have more experience! :D
