Hey All,
Some questions have come up regarding what to bring. I am hoping that if you attended the previous workshops that you might chime in here from that perspective.
1 Art Supplies...must be PORTABLE. You will be doing a lot of art. You need to be able to be mobile. Most everyone gets together and draws or paints til the wee hours of the mornin! I use my laptop and wacom, others use sketchbooks and pencils, coro uses a whole box of paints, inks, pencils and the like...but there is one thing all this stuff has in common. It is all possible to take it places no matter where you go and you will still be able to create. Sketchbooks and Pencils are the easiest to handle.
2 There are many art stores in San Fran. You will be able to purchase some supplies at the workshop from those vendors, but the art stores are nearby as well. All this info will be posted on the map we are working on for the workshop. The maps will be downloadable off the new workshop site once it relaunches.
3 a camera....you will want to have lots of pics. You are going to see many demonstrations that inspire you, situations that arise which move you, and friends whom you won't want to forget. Take lots of pictures.
4. YOUR PORTFOLIO....cd or hard copy...bring it...share it...show it off...get input. We will have a portfolio day with many companies in attendance. Please put together a nice presentation of your BEST work and be seen.
5 anything else necessary besides clean clothes and an open mind?

edit davi: A strong suggestion, check to see if any of your supplies has the words 'flameable' on them. There is a chance that these will not be allowed on your flight. Molly had this problem traveling from Austin to the UK, but it could have been because of international laws.
Check with your airport's website or call to make sure any questionable art supplies is allowed.

besides what Jason already pointed out i suggest bring a 24x18 newsprint pad for the life drawing. and if you got it a portable easel / a chair. they were kinda first come first serve in austin and if you got up u lost your spot uber fast.
also plan for some hotel sketch group so bring pencils, pens, color pencils, paints and anything else you use in your sketch book. im getting all excitted about this already and it its still 3 months away :D

omg...get this!!! we have both air conditioning and chairs!!!
:)
if you can bring a large pad of newsprint and drawing board...great...sketchbooks are much much easier to cart around. travel light k?
you will have plenty of opportunities to make art...bring whichever supplies you wish...within reason. no eight foot canvas or the like.

dont be an idiot like me and leave ur kneadable eraser at home!!
other things to bring: 1 or two blank cds - there were a few times ppl had stuff on their laptops i woulda killed to burn to cd and take back with me - its a convenience thing, just in case.
Pepto-bismol or a similar anti-indigestion medicine
For the endless nights of red bull consumption!
2 sketchbooks. Make it your goal to fill one completely with your own art and studies during the workshop. the other is for note taking/ getting other doods at the workshop to do pieces in it for you.
A bunch of small business card sized slips with yur website, email, name and forum name. DOnt know how many times i had to write that in someones sketchbook.
As jason said, pack light. Theres nothing worse than carting shit around a city ur unfamiliar with, a massive suitcase plus all the shut ur trying to carry along. Make sure your carry-on bag is one you can hoist aorund the city... this will seem like self explanatory stuff to a lot of you but for those whove never travelled...
Sleep lots beforehand and get ur rest. I know its new years but dont come wasted ;)
Oh, and dont take fixative or spraypaint of any sort on the plane. <*BANG*>
See you all there

the idea about bring cards with you to hand out is brilliant.
I can't wait... I've been practicing getting only 3 hours of sleep a night for the last two months, so I'm good to go LOL. Its fun when you're half dead and in a zombie state of mind when its late at night and you're trying to sketch... lots of fun.
See you all there!

they dont even have to be professionally done if you cant afford it - but you will come out of the workshop with a little stack of contact cards for these awesome artists u just met...
it will save you time, strengthen contacts and friendships, and save you wearing goofy nametags around downtown sanfran!

question: what size should my sketchbook be?
normally i just sketch on printing paper but it's a pain in the ass to carry around a bunch of empty paper i think...
should i take different sizes with me? what should be the max? a3?

why dont you sit down and think for like 3 minutes ok?
whats gunna be practical, can you take it places, dont buy an a1 sketchbook cause it aint, alota people like smallish medium sized ones cause you can take them places, think mobility.

About bringing portfolios, should we bring multiple copies to give to potential employers? If so, how many would be a good number?

cards work just fine if your work is on the web. if you want to bring portfolios, I would bring at least half dozen or so.

1 :: does anyone who went to the last workshop or anyone familiar with Petey's plans know what to bring to Petey's sculpture demo other then a notepad and a camera? I can image that bringing a newsprint pad would be great for Ron's head demo, but what do you bring to a sculpting demo? clay? i'm assuming people didn't/don't/won't plan on sculpt along with him (i'm a local so getting supplies to the workshop isn't a problem)
2 :: are there going to be any easels or horses? if there isn't anything to lay or rest the 24x18 newsprint and drawing boards against it might be better for people to stick with smaller paper even if they're not worried about the hassle of lugging them around. just wondering.

wet-nap - Besides some good paper, perhaps bring an actual notebook. Take some notes. A small laptop would be good too, but not as handy.
I would recommend a small recorder, but I believe that the noise levels could bunk that idea.
There will be a lot of information being thrown around. Info on artistic technique, process, business, and some nutty stories. I pride myself in having good retention, but no matter what, you are going to be interacting with a few hundred people who could all have interesting things to say.
Must haves
-Sketchbook 5x7 and bigger.
-Pencils, pens, marker, whatever you enjoy drawing with. Bring an extra one of each.
-Notepad.
-Clean socks.
-A good bag. Shoulder, backpack, (dare I say) fanny pack. You'll need to be somewhat portable as you're going to be moving from intructor to instructor, hotel to hotel, restaurant to bar, etc.....
-An open mind. Lot's to learn, lot's to see. Keep your eyes open and listen.
