i was hoping we could start a thread where people could post their photography. either photos for personal expression or for reference.
of course it would need to be understood that all photos were property of the artist and not to be used by others unless otherwise stated.
here are some of mine. just for fun.
oh, and it would be great to discuss various photographic technique, lighting, film, digital, how to go about finding models etc.

hey i am a photography nut so this is a really cool thread to have started.
just curious but what type of camera did you use, what film speed, what aperature setting, shutter speed, and lens did you use on these pictures. Last do you develope the photos yourself or have it processed at a certain place. if so what place? Hope that was not to many questions, just a shutterbug looking for insight to the photo methodology.

Great idea foster, Ive become very interested in photography as of late, so Im very into this =D
MolvaDo stole the questions to you right outta my mouth =P But all I really care to know is what camera you use, what films you use most, and whether you develop on your own.
I have a minolta maxxum 5, and im poor so i just use whatever the cheapest fuji or kodak color neg film I can find =)..and I dont develop my own film yet, but Im saving up the 40 or so bucks to develop my own BW film..but i got no way of making prints cuz due to some "creative differences" between me and the teacher that is in charge of photography at school, i am not allowed to use the darkroom =\.
Also, a question to anyone and everyone : Who are you favorite photographers?
For me, I love Robert Frank (though I cant get my hands on The Americans), Edward Weston, Ansel Adams (of course =P), and many others..
btw- there are some fairly good photographers who submit work to www.deviantart.com , so I suggest you check that out if your interested =)
maybe ill upload some photos later too =)

Looks like I'm not the only one photographing interesting rusty objects. I have tons of photos but I can't post them because I don't wanna leech too much on itchi's server and they are 400k each which also hurts my modem. I've upped a small selection tho.
The hard sunlight makes it hard to take good pictures. These are mostly machinery ref.

Yay, and we got another photographer up in here =D
Interesting shots Prometheus, and Im looking forward to your "tutorial" =)
And foster, I really liked your photos too..very good texture captures, the lighting was perfect.
Oh, and I know this is super trendy, but if anyone hasnt tried this, you should really experiment with putting anything you can find on either an old UV filter, a blank glass filter, or just some saranwrap rubberbanded on your lens and taking shots through it.
The most common is to use Vaseline, as it can give you a soft focus filter effect..and if you do have a glass filter or plate you can use, try putting one of those circular bandaids in the center and put the vaseline, peanut butter, glue, or whatever around it..you can create some nifty spot filter-esque effects that way =)
I would hope everyone would know this already, but just as a disclaimer..dont put ANYTHING directly on your lens...and have a UV filter on your camera whenever at all possible!
and if your on the east coast (near NYC), buy from B&H photo..theyre cheap, reliable, and its an awesome store in NYC..I urge anyone in the area that hasnt checked it out to do so immediately =)

These are two stills from two movies that my crew and myself shot.
This is from a short called "Sins of the blind"
http://www.phantomarts.co.uk/freeimagehosting/Thomsinsoftheblind.jpg
Sorry it looks stretched...we shot for widescreen. Looks really pixelated too...sorry bout that.
This is a still from a test that we did...we wanted to do advanced rotoscoping so we filmed a lightsaber movie (we knew these 3 guys who were freaks over star wars so they did some choreography yadda yadda...they took it way more serious than we did hehe)

cool beans!
i am very much an amateur. most of my photography is in the studio getting reference for paintings but there has been a growing need in me to take photos for photos sake. i think dave mckean opened this up for me.
i used my nikon 990 digital for the fire alarm pics. i know, i know, it's a glorified point and shoot with a not so good lens. i am saving up for the canon that has interchangeable lenses. that way you can spend the money if you want for a professional optics. it has 6 megapixels of resolution and all that you could ask for in manual control of your shots.
when i took the fire alarm pics i had it on auto. the manual controls did not seem to behave the way i expected and i kept getting exposure problems. what i do to compensate for this is take an exposure from a darker or lighter area (depending on what i want to achieve) by holding the shutter button half way down. this locks that exposure setting. then i move over to my shot.
so.... as you can see i started this thread in hopes that i will get a real education from you people, i need it!
i love what i have seen so far.
amphex wow! help me out!
smeagol, those are nice. good color and composition.
mindcandyman, those are great! they are photos in this forum. i love the still from the "the sins of the blind" great choice and very intriguing lighting. i would love to see more of this from you.
Prometheus, you are another that i need to take me by the hand and teach me. your experiments are cool. the bug pictures rock! i will have to try this also.
jrr, are you sure you are not already a professional photographer. the values, compositions and the choices you made are beautiful! i love black and white but these would hold up strong in color as well.
jester, those are amazing! i mean you got right in there with the lion, snuggled and got some awesome shots.
kaini. nice pics. fun and experimental.

the attached are small sculptures that i did for fun or ref. but the shots have a certain appeal to me. also i re-cropped in photoshop and tweaked the levels. i am not a purist.

January 24th, 2003, 08:04 PM
Yah, keep the photos coming guys, I would love to see a photography sub-forum open up here!
And Jon (I hope you dont mind me calling you by your first name): I assume your talking about the Canon D60? If so, you may or may not now but it was recently discontinued, so youll probably be able to get it for cheaper soon enough =D!
But then again, you may want to watch out for what Canon is gonna come out with next...
But..if it were me, I would go for a traditional camera. Of course there are so many pros and cons for both digital and traditional, but you already have a digital, and if your willing to spend the 2k for the DSLR, why not go for a hasselblad (if your willing to spend alot of money, you could even get a digital back), or just spring for an average (maybe even manual?) SLR and pack up on some nice lenses, some filters, and maybe even developing supplies?
But this is just all what I would do if I somehow got my hands on 2000 bucks =), and go for the DSLR if its what you want.
Also, your sculpture shots are awesome..maybe its just cause your a god at sculpting! The second one looks amazingly realistic! If it wasnt for the cut-off in the background, I really could have believed that was a real person wearing makeup!
On the first one, the low DOF is kind of distracting but I like the composition and lighting..its a fairly good abstract shot. I dont know how much flexibility your camera offers, or if you do this already, but you should try experimenting with different apertures and compositions with any shot you take, since you have a digital cam and your not wasting any film.
Kaini : The first one is an interesting long exposure...maybe next time do some experiments with different colors and maybe even different films (unless your using digital of course)? And the third shot is just awesome..great work =) The colors are lovely and warm, and the patterns and DOF work perfectly..very well done. The second one, however, seems fairly bland and uninteresting to me..no offense to you. There is no object of real interest in the piece, especially as the sunset is really nothing special..From my short time of interest in photography, Ive learned the hard way not to waste preciously expensive (=P) film on sunsets that you can see every day.
Anyways..keep up the good work =D.
Jester : I wish I had a zoo near me, Id love to take some pictures of animals..and youve done a really good job. I especially like the first and 3rd shots..though the lighting is a bit harsh, they really caught my eye..well done =)
What film did you use for those?
Keep showing more stuff everyone..even though this is a concept art site, I think a Photography section would be a nice addition. =D

amphex - well, it was a frosty cold and clear day at noontime - thus the harsh light. Normally I just use "normal" films, i.e. Fuji or Kodak films, it depends on whether I take the photos "at home" (= negative) or on holidays (= positive), but mostly at 100, max. of 200 DIN (sorry, don't know the ASA right now).
foster - thanks, I consider these as some of my best but I have some really nice tiger shots, too, which I'll post next week.

There's so much to say about art and photography. how do you go about finding models? i am not sure i will ever be able to have a photo session with a beautiful subject as you do. i'm afraid that i will just be staring and thinking wow what a beautiful woman!

Oblio ! these are really impressive ! You look really freak on the last one :D
Thanks a very so much lot Jon :D I don't know why you couldn't find some nice models in your area. Even me living in France I had the pleasure to work with 3 american models. There are places on the web that can put you in contact with talented and beautiful women. And you can find studios too. Where d'you live in Jon ? I'm sure I can put you in contact with someone !
I will never forget my first shooting session with a nude model, it was a complete disaster because I just couldn't manage with the flashs and all the stuff a professional studio is able to bring. lol ! All my photos were completely blurred but in the end I managed to do great visuals with it. You know, I really am not a good photographer at all but I think that what makes the difference is what you have in mind during the shoot. I usually draw some sketches before the session and I show it to the model in order for her to know what I really want.
I definitely am not into digital for many reasons. The first one is the price you have to pay if you wanna have a good camera. If you are not ready to launch your 4000 bucks for a D100 Nikon or a D60 Canon (lens not included) it is not worth it. To me the quality of the pic is too poor on a Coolpix for example. If you use your cam for a reference purpose it's another story.
But the real reason why I won't buy a digital is the MYSTERY. There's nothing I love more than waiting for my negas to be revealed. When you have to wait for the labo do the job, you look backward at your shooting session thinking "was it the good exposure I chose ? the good shutter speed ? etc..."
And when I'll be famous with lot of money to spend I'll do my own labo and I'll be the master of the world hahaha !!!;)

Its getting bigger =D Damn, we apparently have some good photographers here =)
Mindcandyman : I wish I still had my cable modem (even though it was dial-up cable and disconnected every 5 minutes =P)..Id love to see that short!
Jon : Very interesting shots again =D. I love the reds in both, and I especially love how the bright warmth contrasts with the top in the first one...and the lighting is awesome in both..btw..what is that =P?
I really cant think of any crits or suggestions, but maybe livingrope the master can offer some help =).
LivingRope : Nice work..these shots show alot of talent and potential, and it looks like your one who all of us can learn a great deal from =). The third shot is, by far, my favorite. The contrast and lighting along with the great pose and expression give this shot an amazing mood and sense of mystery and excitement..its got soul =) I love it.
The first one is also very nice, and the lighting is really interesting, especially with that plastic shirt and softly lit hat. The second one, though, just seems..awkward. Im assuming it was a multiple exposure, and, to put it bluntly, I really just dont think it works.
But you are obviously much better than the rest of us here, and I know I would love to see more from you!
Oblio : holy crap dude..go find the guy that took those shots and tell him to come here and give us all tips =P
Jester : Again, cool animal shots =D I especially love the seal on the chair!! Haha..that one definitely made me smile =).
And even if everyone is turning their back on you..everyone here at CA still has their..front..on you..or something..=)
LivingRope : The mystery is why you wont buy digital?! Thats the one thing I hate about film cameras!! I hate the mystery..thats the worst part of film! The reason I wont move to digital is that film cameras are cheaper, theres no way I could afford a DSLR and I need the interchangable lenses, no digital camera can match the quality of a neg =), and when your using film you only get 24-36 shots on a roll so it really forces you to think about your photos before you take them..analyze light, composition, subject, whether to use a filter or not, what lens to use..all that..I love it! Plus, you have alot more power over the outcome of your photos if you develop and print your own photos..which I dont have the money to do yet, but Im looking forward to it someday =).
Oh..and foster : I have a Minolta Maxxum 5, 35mm SLR with a 28-80 and 75-300 with a filter collection so far consisting of only a #25(red), polarizer, 819(came in a kit..I never use it=P), and..obviously, 2 UVs. The camera is fairly cheap and can be set fully auto (though I wouldnt reccomend it). A very good begginers camera, and I would definitely reccomend it..though right now Id probably be willing to sell it as Im saving up to buy either an old view cam or a used Hasselblad (med format - probably 500 series) although at my current rate of approximately...0 dollars a week, it doesnt look like my dream is going to come true any time soon ;)

thank you.
i've been doing B&W photo since i was about 6 - my father was a real pasionate.
And we had our own so called lab - i've been developing my own pictures (since there were no labs as there ar today) and i've even made my own chemicals - i remember measuring the quantities of PotasiumBenzoat (i hope i spell it right in english) and waiting for the right temperature. I've had different recepies and ways to make them. My fathr did color photo with all the process by hand back then.
My first camera was russian with "wide film" - i think it was 76mm - and it had a paper compactable zig-zag part - i don't know how to name it in english.
Then i've had a "Practika" - german one.
Anyway.. i've had a lot to mess with in my youth - and since i was living on a mountain all by myself i had plenty of time and no friends to play with :)
Now.. i'm in a civizated place, big city.. always no time. I don't have the patiece to wait for negatives. I want the result NOW!
So.. i'll go into digital. and a cheap one too since i barely can hope for more. I also need it for textures and stuff.
Anyway... mybe one day i'll go back to traditional but for now.. i consider myself a newbie again. These are different times and i want to ride the wave - pixels baby.. pixels! :)
So.. i hope to be able to post soon in this area.
For now.. i still have to catch up on the drawing side so...
see you later!

Hey Oblio, the crew for that particular one was really small...it was a quick thing I pulled together for a screening at a theater. We had about 10-12 people in the crew I think. I shot it on a jvc gy-dv500 camera. Digital...but with the footage doctored in post. It takes a lot of money to get involved in film...probably 4 x as much as getting involved in photography. Our camera was 5 grand...To rent lights costs a lot. All the sound gear costs about 2 grand. The tripod like 500-600 bucks. Plus all the software, etc..., etc... There are cheaper alternatives depending on what you want to do. Lemme know if you are serious and I will give you the cheaper alternatives...but you are still going to end up spending like 4-5 thousand total. Unless you want to make silent films or whatever. Our website is being made as we speak...I will have that short available for download when it's up.

ha - thx MCM.
I'm not worried about the costs - here is a diferent story.
I was just curious - i've been in some projects like that - also i've been in comercial full-length movies - i know a bit of the stuff. I was just curious how you did it.
If i'll get some money to buy a camera i'll do a short too. I want to own the camera first and play with it for a while before gathering the rest of the crew - i want to know exactly what i'm doing.
Anyway.. for now all are dreams from the past. I've got another priority and a new love for now so... back to drawing ;)

The funny thing is...our camera cost us like 5,000 bucks (with one lens...not the greatest I might add) and our camera is cheap compared to what some people use. Literally if you gave me a million dollars I could spend it in a day. Honestly...hehe. Yeah it's pretty expensive hehe. That's why you have to get a crew of people that love what they are doing...cause you can't pay them that's for sure hehehe. If anyone's around Philly/NY they are welcome to help out if they want to see what it's like...there is always work to be done...having an art director with experience would be great too heheh. We are in pre-production for a 10 minute short right now. Lemme know guys if you want in. Oblio?...fly in from Germany (I think that's where you are right?)...anyways fly in from where you are and work on my crew...Your experience would come in handy! :D (see I'm recruiting already hehe...all volunteer of course)

no man.. you go it wrong. i'm not even on the map :)
I'm from Romania - and things are really different here. But i've been working with some french produceres and the movies were broadcasted in France (on M6).
I actualy had people recognizing me and calling back - it was cool.
Now i'm still stuck with the french but i've changed the industry ;)

hey bro...wow sorry...boy was I wrong. Romania...ok I will remember that from now on. That's awesome you are involved with the industry in france that's awesome man. There are a lot of good things going on in France right now...Amelie being the most well known. There was also a director who shot everything on 24p digital and replaced all the skies in his movie to make it real dark and menacing...I can't remember the name of his movie (something in french)...it was awesome though...I read about it in American Cinematographer. At any rate now I really want you on my crew ;) ...we could use your experience. Oh well...maybe someday we will work together...ya never know right? :(

Great idea Jon!
Photography is one of my passions. I have a website dedicated to just photography at phfx.com (http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/)
or www.artbyphil.com/phfx/.
Here are some of my personal favorites:

Let me know which ones you like on my site. I'm always looking to improve.
I also take about 99% of the photos for the band Vital. Check out the gallery section on www.vitalband.com (http://www.vitalband.com) .

egerie - great photos, especially the first and the last one. But that chateau is very nice, too. I never took any photos in b/w, but I feel I should after seeing yours and other people's photos here.
I managed to scan some of my landscape photos. Hope you like them.

Phil : Those are very nice, I especially like the third one. Its very dreamy and almost surreal =). The other two are nice, but on the first one I think that the telephone wire, or whatever the is on the left, really takes away from the amazing beauty of the sky..but its very nice nonetheless.
I perused through your site, and out of what Ive seen so far, my favorites have to be:
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photos/port03/bugbulb.jpg
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photos/port03/danw.jpg
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photos/port03/maurinexmas.jpg
ill go look some more =)
Keep up the great work, and btw ,what type of camera you use?
Egerie : Awesome black and white stuff! I love the second and third shots, they have great moods =D. The first color is also very nice, and has some great colors and a very interesting perspective. The last one has a kind of odd composition that doesnt seem too pleasing to me, and I dont like it much.
But your stuff is very nice..do you develop your own film?
Jester : Those look nice, but it seems that all of those shots are just missing something..They all lack something to make them stand out, whether it be an interesting object somewhere or some sort of eye-catching color or whatever. I think the second to last is the best one, although it wouldve been nicer if the pole had more contrast from the sky (polarizer?). Dont get me wrong, theyre all solid photos..I just think they could be better.
Keep it up as well =)
PS - If you think Im wrong about something or disagree with something I say, keep in mind that I am just as (and in many cases more) amatuer than you, so you dont have to listen to a word I say =P

egerie - I love those B/Ws man.
Amphex - I've been using a Canon G1 since it came out. It shoots at 2k which is what our frames at
work shoot out at. I have a whole lot of accesores
too. Some I've made myself. I will buy a 1Ds if
Canon doesn't have another good Dslr by March.
Glad you like those pics. The maurinexmas photo wasn't "touched" at all. Everything else was though.

amphex - don't apologize for your valuable feedback! I see what you mean, hmmm, I was always a fan of these, but perhaps I'm partial, I took them about 8 years ago and was so happy to have found this place that I may see these as being better than they are.
Phil - I like that workbot photo very much, mostly for the funny idea.
ZippZopp - those cathedral photos are gorgeous! I also like that nature photo with the flat rock. The last one (b/w macro shot) is difficult to read - what is it? The others (second post) are beautiful!

This image was done with a 35mm, in my apartment. The moon was created by dodging in the darkroom. It was part of a series in which I built a paperhouse and had weird little narratives take place, ending in setting the paperhouse on fire and to my dismay nearly my apartment. ;)
