Jon Foster told me something very wise today. He said...As you are learning if you find that you are becoming comfortable with a particular technique or style...set it aside for a little while and work on another technique, etc... These are very wise words for one to become a well rounded artist. I have been painting really moody paintings lately so I wanted to change things up.

BLACKHAWK THIS IS FOR YOU MAN!!!! YOU ROCK! I loved your style so much I had to try it... :D

Hey all, couldn't stay away. I was embarressed for having missed a few days and got into kind of a depressed slump. But hell, it's so much fun around here and I missed you all.

Hunter, I'm inspired like crazy by your great paintings. I've spent a little more time on this one and tried to increase both my precision and color usage. Also used a couple of different brushes instead of my just my favorite and tired palette knife.

retro-good to see you back and posting, the green wash is my favorite

mindcandy-you're making some great improvements

wetterschneider-great color as always ;)

daarken-i really like that one, very vibrant. i almost wish the bg was more blue, since it reminds me of snowflakes. then you'd have a fire-and-ice thing goin on, dunno if thats what you were going for

oblio-yea thats a tough view, ive tried it a few times and always end up really skewing something.

jester-thanx, the dots were a vain attempt to save a piece of crap :P glad they work a bit at least

here;s tonight's, number 53:

Congrats on hitting 1000 in this thread everyone. Great work and great dedication. Here's mine for tonight. Sanguine and white chalk on a brown sketchbook pad. Took me 20 minutes to do. I wish I had a better scan of it, but my scanner is very weak. I'm trying to save up enough cash right now to buy a quality one.

Retro - Welome back. The first one and the green wash are my favorites in this batch. Beautiful work.

Negativespace - Great looking SP you have there. Something is bugging me about the eyes though on the first one. It seems to me like they may be too far apart, or too small, I don't know. Just something nitpicking at me. The second SP has a really nice texture too it, but the right eye may be too close to the nose though. Great work all around, keep at it. The zombie one had me cracking up, great job.

Lionel - LOL, you should see how many sketchbook pages I have of noses and eyes. Granted, they all look like crap, but I have about 5 each probably.

Hemchen - Great work on this man. I love this kind of style. Your left eye is starting to go cross-eyed though :D Good stuff.

Coriat - Thanks. Your proportions and forms look pretty good on this one. As you have pointed out though, the shading could use some smoother transitions and some more gradients. Keep cranking at it though bud, don't worry about this only being the 15th, just keep cranking them out and working at them. Just go with the flow and challenge yourself and you'll begin to see your improvement in no time. This is my 57th self-portrait. I'm also counting the crap I did 3 months ago that I wouldn't really classify as self-portraits :D
Oh, one tip with hair that I found, sometimes it's better to treat hair as masses of values. I know it works for me since I shave my head, but I find on the long hair too that it can give desirable results as well. Keep it up man :)

Jester - Thanks. Yeah, I actually cropped it down once, but it ruined the entire composition I thought, so I just left it as is. Your experiencing my week from last week. This week has been great to me so far, and I'm thanking my lucky stars for it, but inevitably I'm going to hit the rough patch again. I don't know if it effects senior aritsts as much or if it's artistic growing pains. I'm not experienced or skilled enough yet to make that judgement, but I'm just going to roll with the punches. The eye alignment and the form of the mouth could use some work, so be careful of those spots. I'm still working diligently to get my eye alignment down, so I know how frustrating it is when it's screwed up. Keep working at it man, your improving.

Oblio - Thanks. The eyes and mouth area on this one are sweet. Awesome work on this man, glad to see you posting daily again :chug:

Daarken - Great SP man. The dramatic shadows on the mouth and nose are awesome.

Mime - Welcome to the thread. This is a very strong SP. The nose is a little bit off as you pointed out, but I definitely like this SP. Keep em' coming :)

MindCandyman - Thanks, you had me seriously blushing when I first read it. I'm glad to see I can be of some use :D Be mindful of your proportions though, you became a little long in the face on this one. Memorize those proportions and always keep them in the back of your mind when doing these SP's. Keep working at it man and listen to Foster :D It's great to see he's helping you along.

Wetter - Don't be embarassed, this is a wonderful SP. That left eye is beautiful, the very first thing that struck me when I saw it. The highlight on the forehead is great as well. This is definitely one of your strongest. Great job.

Jhibbs - The hair is great in this piece, you rendered it extremely well. Your getting stronger. The only thing bugging me about this one is the lower lip, it looks like it's really popped out of the face, like your sucking your upper-lip into your mouth. Might want to be careful about the values on the top of the lower-lip. Unless of course if that was the face pose you were going for :D If it was, ignore that comment.

Have a great Thursday everyone and Happy Halloween.

Happy Halloween to everybody!

Not one of my masterpieces but the best one in this week so far. I'm off for the long weekend and hope to see you all again on Monday.

Jester

@MindCandyMan - thanks for your kind words. As I said to jhibbs, I WILL continue till they say "That's you!" :D I like your latest (in "Blackhawk's style). Working with white for highlighted areas is very rewarding, isn't it? Keep practicing, you're improving rapidly! But watch out for your glasses!

@negativespace - tonal paper is what I did quite successfully last week - and did today again to give me a feeling of success again ;) I like how you modelled your face with those bold and strong brush strokes. The Halloween one is also very funny. I considered putting in some blood drops around my lips but refrained from it for fear of mucking it completely.

@Oblio - Jason might be right with this, however, a lot of people seem to post spods they are not comfortable with (including yourself ;) ). I think the main reason for posting is to get crits - and I have made the experience that people sometimes criticize parts I'm completely happy with and seem to like parts I'm unhappy with. By examining those parts (both) I learn a lot, too. Yours is ok - I just wonder what this straight line in the right half is meant to be. Or is it just this Painter bug that when you switch between eraser and another tool that sometimes a line is drawn from the position of the palette to the first touching of the screen again?

@daarken - wow.

@mime - nice one. I can't see anything wrong with the nose

@Wetterschneider - good to see you back. Yeah, I know this embarrassed feeling, too - I have it every Monday when restarting after the weekend. Yours is very nice, only the face seems a bit too small compared to your earlier ones.

@jhibbs - your left ear seems a bit too much twisted to the viewer, also your lower lip is protuding more than I expect yours actually does. But: still a good one, I'd like to be able to paint like that!

@Blackhawk - another one dedicated to sanguine. And I LOVE that brown sketchbook paper. I don't get such around here (searching for years now!). I especially like how you left open the right half of your face and it still looks complete. Thanks for your kind words. I hope next one will be better again.

Blackhawk: I really like that last one you really got the white highlights on the nose just right

negativespace: Rofl that is very well done :) Happy Halloween

jhibbs: Looking good though I think that bottom lip needs a bit of fixing

Wetterschneider: That last one is really something special my favorate of yours:)

MindCandyMan: Nice to see you trying out new stuff keep it up!!

mime: Welcome :) that one is looking good I look foward to seeing more :)

daarken: Wow thouse colors are soo vivid lovely

Oblio: You are really starting to nail thouse simple ones cool!!!

negativespace: Whish I could get close to that using liquid ink :) good work

jester: keep going it will get easier

coriat: you are comming on in leaps and bounds :)

Hermchen: nice I loke the way you vary the direction of your shading to show form.

i just came on to see if i got comments (which i did,and i agree about the lip, it frustrated me a bit, that was my second attempt at it). i liked this piece more when i started. and jester you're right about the ear, probably because i got up a few times (i usually sit dead still)

but i really just had to say that Blachhawk, thats my favorite traditional piece on this thread so far. the sanguine and the white chalk go so harmoniously on the brown paper, and its very well rendered. the proportions are dead-on and the nose i perfect. reminds me of Anthony Ryder's figure drawings. keep up the good work man.

I am sorry to reedit this reply, but I just wanted to give mime some advice how to improve his SP. I thought there were some major faults about it with the lighting. Your light source isn't coincident through the picture. Look at your nose i.e. and than at your cheeks... At the nose the light is coming from above and at your cheeks it is obviously coming from the right side. So I tried to fix that problem. Your eyes seemed to be a little bit too large...fix. Trie to add more Detail to your Portrait, if you aim a realisctic style. It's more fun watching the pic that way...more to explore. Be more cautious about using black and white. Try to think every white stroke before u put it on paper. It's the holy color of highlight...Don't use it as eraser as u did at several parts of your SP, at the (our) right lower cheek i.e.. I chose a different format and repoitioned your head a bit, so that your eyes fit into the golden section. I hope this was helpful...

please don't take all those coments as insult...I just wanted to help :)

I'm soo far behind with the comments, apologies

@retro thanks for the inspiration, man the green one is cool
@negativespace welcome good to see another new face
@daarken cool background do your homework but please don't stay away too long.
@oblio handled this difficult angle well
@mime welcome! like the monitor glow on the forehead
@mindcandyman the forehead seems too short
@wetterchneider intense the salmon colour really glows
@jhibbs love the reflection of the lashes on the light area of the cheek, yeah the ear and the lip, but you know that already
@negativespace uhm someone broke your uhm nose ... happy halloween to you too
@blackhawk the sanguine and white chalk one is so spot on. nice placement on the page too.
@jester what happened to acurately rendering the glasses?
@lionel how about a mid toned background?
@keyth cool definition of the forehead
@hermchen happy halloween accurate brush control

I missed a day so here is three instead. Not my best, my drawing time was peppered with interrupts.
#1 is liquid ink fine - the only one with fairly ok proportions and likeness
#2 is wet water colours
#3 is a finger paint brush with richard nixon's thumb as dab image

thanxs everyone for the warm welcome, i'm honoured to be among you all, there are so much talented artists here ....
i'm sorry i dont have time tonight to give my comments to the last SP shown here, i'm too tired and i should already be sleeping. But I will tomorrow.

today's portrait was done traditionally, pencil, "pierre noire" and white pencil on coloured paper, the ressemblance is ok ... but i miss life in the drawing, its a boring portrait, there is no style or no "little something" needed to have a great picture .... the problem is that i dont know what is this "little something" and i dont know how to add it .... i will experiment more and more in the next portraits.
This is really really great drawing every day these sorts of pictures. thank you all !!

Ok I took my nephews out trick or treating tonight. Man I am seriously tired. I can't keep my eyes open. So here is my only contribution.

Happy Halloween everyone. Here is my crappy contribution. It's all I could do on this lack of sleep hehe. I know I know...the proportions are way off...sorry.

lionel-good stuff but watch out for grays, that first one seems to have a lot of them

mindcandyman-yea that nose is WAY off :p by the way did you notice we have the same initials and we both use them as signatures?

keyth-good quicky, havent seen a long one from you for a bit though. im sure you got your reasons.

heres mine for tonight, decided to have another shot at the 'eyes and nose' thing, seeing as my last attempt was horrible. done by monitor light again, getting a bit better at it.
LAST ONE OF THE MONTH!!

My eyes were all bloodshot tonight. They are extremely painful right now, so I'm going to get some sleep and keep this post and comments sweet and simple, or atleast I'll try to :D

http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod42.jpg

Jester - Thanks. Yeah, it took me awhile to find this pad, and it was kind of expensive, but after seeing some of Kchen's sketches in other threads, I had to try it out. Have a great weekend and this SP looks like your best this week. Great job, seeya Monday.

Lionel - Thanks :) Great set of SP's there. Great hand as well, although the finger dug in the cheek looks a little too small at the tip. Keep it up man.

Jhibbs - Thanks :) I'm really digging this latest piece. You rendered the nose very, very well. The spots bugging me though are the left eye and the area just above the eyebrows. The values and form seem to get lost in these spots. Great piece though and thanks again.

Keyth - Great speed SP there. I'm wondering, how long does it take you to crank these ones out, they are very well done.

Hermchen - LOL, that is awesome. Great stuff man.

Mia - Thanks. I really like the first one, the lively swooping lines give this one a great feel. Keep it up, I enjoy your experimentation.

Oblio - Get some sleep, then do your SP's :D I like this, crazy line's all over an SP always look interesting to me. Only spot I would work on is the hairline at the top, kind of giving a bald/toupee vibe thing there. Daarken pointed the same thing out to me on one of my pencil SP's earlier. Keep it up man.

Mime - The form is very well done. If your looking to add life to it, do like Andrew Jones does. He soul searches when he does his SP's, and it shows in his work. His stuff always has a message and life about it. Even the simplest SP of his. It's amazing how he does it. Just keep working at it, and don't be afraid to experiment.

MindCandy - Those eyes are way, way off. :D LOL I cracked up when I saw this.

Cotron - That is scary, and very sweet. Nice job.

Have a great Friday everyone. Hopefully we get a lot of responses to Oblio's call-to-arms to do the Self-portrait tomorrow. It'd be great to see a lot of people try it tomorrow. Take it easy everyone.
