I'm trying to figure out what this is. I want to put one together for myself, I'm trying to figure out what they use for the block at the end, is it rubber or is it wood, or something else? If anyone knows what it is and what they use for the end, it'll be mightily appreciated.

im not sure what you're referring to. the black paper that the guy is drawing on? or the little stick? the stick is used so that the the artist won't smear the paint all over the place. It keeps his hands from touching the surface but still adds support for his drawing hand!:)

i think you're just talking about a mahl stick, i think they have metal ones wood ones etc and usually have a rubber tip...keeps your hand off the paper or canvas while u work so it doesn't smear.

Thanks guys. I had an idea what it was used for, I just didn't know the name for the stick or what material they used for the end. Thanks for the help, very much appreciated. I have a bad left shoulder, so hopefully this helps alleviate some of the pain when I'm working for extended periods.

The Mahl-Stick. - Sometimes you want to rest his hand when painting, for steadiness. The "mahl-" or rest-stick has a ball on the end, which one usually covers with a wad of rag, so that it can be placed against the canvas without injury, and the hand rested on it. It is so light that it can be held with the branches in the palette hand, and stiff enough to support the brush-hand.
