wow, that city is nice. The photographer is nice too. The first one is a little lackluster though. Try more genre pictures like the photographer, they'll help you in the long run.
And even when you create your own characters like in the top one, it'll help to have models/references to work from. Very few artists can realistically render a figure without pose reference of SOME kind.
As for that city. Neato!! Looks like mounds and mounds of acrylic!! The colors, lighting, even the abstraction...VERY nice.
Look at the artist Turner and his ships (he's from the 1800s I think. I'm thinking of the painting "slave ship" in particular... at least, thats what I think the name is). His work might inspire you a lot.
