So much stuff on this site...man I've been clicking around for weeks and I'm still drooling... :$
So's I get a bit of momentum going, I'll start with some ol' studies.
This is what I did this summer when I got bored and didn't know what to draw.
I'd flip open a national geographic and speedraw in ink. The idea was to warm up by doing these as fast as I could
....not letting any room for patience and analysis but more of an
intuition thing

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/sketch-c22.jpg

I really suck at architecture so I'm promise myself to post more like this and try to get GOOD at it....this one's gonna get colored...maybe today :bashful:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/Spainfull_bw.jpg

Here's another thing I suck at....Painting... so you guys are gonna get to see what I'm really bad at....I'm gonna need help :[ All these speedpaints I see on this site really blow my mind and I'm learning lots so far, so her's the digital in order of execution

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/blackchick.jpg
trying out brushes and getting familiar with ps....lost patience

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/blackchick02.jpg
Not getting bogged down with construction but more or less trying to get values, volume and lighting right... and brushes

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/deepfish.jpg
Got this picture in the deepsea ref. forum. Helluvalot o' fun :rendered:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/deepfish2.jpg
This is my latest study, I try not to spend to much time on these, mostly because I want results quickly and trying to experiment as much as I can with
brushes... starting to understand something

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/warscene2.jpg
Posted this one in DSG...(it got pretty crazy) promise I won't be redundant with my future posts when I get proficient with posting ( My first thread ever !!)

I try applying the speed painting principle to traditional media... never went to art school so'm trying to simulate an education here.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/sketch-c01.jpg

So this is my go at it..... it won't be as daily as it should be but I'll try to stay constant.... be posting more stuff soon !!

I'm a newbie at posting so if IM doing something wrong...lemme know

Dennal Floss

Most of these drawings will get removed later on...when I get more regular and start posting REAL daily's.

Here a a few pages from a collective comic book me and some friends are doing. It's pure improv ( with a set of minor rules ); once you get the comicbook folder, you read it up and then do your page all while trying to keep the storyline constant.....You have one week for one page....it's fun <3

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/H-E_II-01.jpg The first page is the rough version 'cuz I likes it better then the inked one.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/H-E_II-03.jpg

Here's a morning doodle I meant to include... I like doodling elderlies
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/sketch-c15.jpg

Some life models... from 5 to 15 min. This was a few years back... I'm not that good anymore and it hurts... I haveta get back into it more....but the TIME OH DEAR LOOKIT THE TIME !!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/model_collage02.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/model_collage01.jpg

Ok gotta study now, and post some real new stuff.

:dead: I often get to a point where I don't know how to improve on a painting anymore, and eventualy lose patience because I feel I'm only doing the same thing OVER and OVER again.
So I saw ladykillers the other night and grabbed a few stills. Really nice comp. and lighting in many scenes. The cohen brothers have a nasty esthetic sense to their storytelling....the movie itself was.....bah! I'll save that for the lounge forum.

Here's an unfinished piece that I feel is coming along well. So if I feel good about, I might as well post it before I do something EVIL to it. The next post should be a close to finished version.... maybe someone with good intentions will tell me what I should do before it all goes terribly wrong :O

Nice pages dennal. I used to warm up to (and still do) the NG last summer. I like your linework and figures, keep doing the paints, I know it's agonizing, i'm trying to do it me-self
cheers, keep posting :)

Really enjoying your inks, and the architecture stuff is looking good. I've also noticed improvement in the paintings. Try using harder edged brushes and also less saturated colors. Hope that helps.

Steak-tron- Thanks for the feedback and encouraging comments. Seeing this site and witness how people struggle and improve tremendously on their work really got me going and made me realize how out of touch I am with an artistic community. Hope to see you here again !!!

Groover - Thanks for the advice, you're gonna have to check up on me to see if I'm listening.

My Life sessions are starting tomorow night, I can hardly wait !! I should be posting model stuff here at least weekly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/foodgolum-sketch.jpg
This is a foodgolem sketch I did for DSG. You can check out the finished version HERE (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=30082)

These are Flash illustrations that someone commissioned from me last summer. They were done with ref (of course). Didn't know I could do that sort of stuff. Took me 1h30 per illustration..funstuff with vectors

Here's today's second go at it. I desaturated the colors and as suggested, tried a hard edge brush. But I think I get lost in the steps I have to follow because this painting feels very irregular ( add a bit of shadow here...a bit there and oooopps forgot to do that detail.....now what color was I using ??)
Anyway. don't think I'll have time to work on it again today
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/dork_ladykillers2.jpg
so here's it is. :dur:

Groover McNab
September 14th, 2004, 04:18 PM
If you forget the color you were using, remember there's no shame in eyedropping colors that are already in the painting. While you have the brush tool selected, holding down the alt/option key conveniently changes the brush to the eyedropper tool. Just a tip, in case you didn't know that already :teeth:

Awright, so today was my first life model sesion since juin, and before was...........oh way back when, who knows. I've got lotsa work to do but I've done it before. I just have to keep at it. The session itself is fun, it's a great gang that attends...really laid back. My only gripe is the poses rarely go over 5min... sometimes it's ok but sometimes I wanna dive into the drawing more.
But hey! I digress

Groover - thanks for keeping an eye on me and thnx for the tip, the eyedropper selects the combined color not the original one. But I guess it's like trad. medium and you just can't get quite the same tone of red or whatever. I got bored with that project so I'll give it a rest and post a finished version soon.

Quick sketch I did while waiting for the bus.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/sketch_sept18.jpg

These are studies that I SHAMELESSLY copied of Graig Mullins work. I don't understand how this man thinks "lighting". IT'S BRILLIANT !!! I warmed up with these to try and get a smooth yet rough flow to applying colors. I tried to keep them under 20 min., won't be posting studies like this often but just thought it was worth showing once.

PARt III !!! Ok, so now I got bored with this one so I finished it off best I could. This study was worth it !! learned a lot and I'll keep doing some more and trying different approaches.

I'm gonna be posting a few more of these Flash paintings. I'm designing a swallow for an animation project I'm working on.... right now I'm looking for style but especially a good palette so this bird stays coherent with the other designed work.
I have a hell of alot of work to do because in the end this bird has to be
"animatable "
But so far I'd like to know what some of you think.

Remember those life models I posted earlier?? ( :nohope: I don't know who the fuck I'm talking to but at least I'm listening ) Well I wanna get back to that level of skill but I'm gonna need more than once a week model session...Yes I am. But we'll have to see what Mr. Bank account and Mrs. Time have to say about that...Yes we do.
I'm picking up speed but.....

Its great to see your improvement in color and architecture as you go along! I really get inspired when I see that kind of evolution.

I LOVE your inks, may I ask what you use? pen, brush? I am really a noob when it comes to ink and I'd love to learn more. I like what you do with it, you have skill :)

Also enjoying your lifedrawing sketches and drawings! Seeing people work, is like seeing a little into how they think.

I doze off and come back to post somethin' I forgot and ....... you guys are quick!!!

Marie Thanks, I have to do lot's more architecture and perspective... the first one I posted was a study from a picture, the latest was in an alley and I tried a weird warp in perspective...have to do more of those. I use 3 diff. pens. One small, that doesn't react to water and a larger ( 0,8 ) that I like to sketch with and does react to water. But they're regular felt pens that I screw aroun d with. The other one is A mars graphic3000 duo. Some weird Hybrid pen that has a felt tip and a brush on each end. IT's cool to cover large surfaces.

Xia Really happy you popped by :D , thanks for the encouragement.
Somethimes I think of your gesture drawings during the quick poses and think to myself....How the F&*?ck ??? :\ So I keep trying :[

Understood a few things at thursday's model life session.

The skilllevel of figure drawing I had 5 years ago was when I went to sessions 4 times a week...heh....That's a note to myself Blah :blahblah:

Re-aquaited myself with ol' Mr. Col-erase. I don't know about you but blue has a magical flow to it.....it GLOWS. Kept it at bay for a while but I found an old friend.

Drew alot with the SIDE of the pencil......hadn't done that in a since
whoknowswhy and couldn't get over how smooth it was to get a loose construction down quickly.

Made alot of mistakes ...but admit to having a small orgasm nonetheless :\

Another Graig Mullins copy.... :bashful:
I've had this picture on my desktop for a week now and I had to try a speedpaint.....if you know this painting and compare it to the original version, mine looks more like a shinydwarf on a pony. Alot of info I couldn't make out on this study, but that's the beauty of his style....
such an abstract approach. :nohope:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/CraigM_knight.jpg

Would anybody NOT recommend me to do this kind of study ? I have no painting education (this is also the way I learned to draw ) so I can't foresee pitfalls that may be obvious to artists with a more formal education in drawing and painting.......( I also have little confidence in picking colors from my head so this is some form of artistic denial ).

Yeah I sweated a bucketload for that piece... quite a lot of effort went into it and I'm really glad you like it 'cause you inspired IT. After rumaging through your sketchthread I thought that your painting studies from movies way cool.... so I tried it. Good way to learn and thanks again.
But I ran out of breath at getting this ultra realistic type of look, so now I want to try somethin' different (did I mention you also turned me on to Craig Mullins with your DSG war environment piece ?).

September 26th, 2004, 03:57 AM
Well then, I'm REALLY pleased with the result you got! It is a seriously good piece of work...and sometimes working from ref like film shots can help you with technique more than working on a 'concept' piece....It's great to see the progression in this thread, I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for sure.

Edit: BTW, I really need to work that war piece up....could make a nice finished piece.

Sikkness- Thanks for the kind words. Yeah I like that DRAWING (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/Spainfull_bw.jpg) 'cuz it reads well. But the true story is : it's a study of a picture that I first blocked in col-erase ( for proportion ) and then inked out right away for detail. If you look closely, you'll notice that the details are loose according to the perspective ( but I like that kind of layout, so it doesn't look technical). Halfway through, I realized that I had misjudged my proportions and had to leave stuff out. And if you look even closer!! You'll notice that the old man standing on his balcony, if he were real, he would be kneeling(on the picture he is standing). He is much too big but composition-wise, it works, so I like it.
And HELL YEAH !!! I WILL DO MORE !!!!! ( thanks for the wake up call )

I'm not much of a technical draftsman, I have trouble making buildings and machines look interesting and varied as they do in real life, so with that in mind, I went out today to sketch some buildings. One of which I wiil go back because it has alot of variety !!

Good lord I'm chatty today :blahblah:

hey that last life drawing session was really getting good, the upper right drawing of the brown paper series in particular. You've been doing a lot of work, the volume is very impressive. I think I've been to your book before, but it feels like the first time, there so much here that's new!

some suggestions brought to mind from your comments about your last self portrait: try to see the subject all at once and start to draw it as a whole, then as you break it down, see how the pieces relate to each other, using the negative shapes between features/details/limbs to find their placement within the whole.

I think on some of your drawings you're pushing the outline too hard -- don't forget that it's not really there, it's just a method of describing an edge between two value areas.

With both drawing and color painting, remember that value is more important than hue. You seem to have an easier time doing that in the bird paintings, I really like those!

I hope this is helpful, I sound fragmentary and long-winded to me.

BEE-dubooya-KAY-- I read alot of your posts on other threads and often felt that the crits you offer are well thought out and constructive, I'm glad I was no exceptio!! You actually spotted a major technical BOOBOO (among other things) that I'm struggling with these days. I'm trying to break away from the "line" in my drawings and it's not easy :dur: . I'm shopping around for some schooling to help me diversify because I feel I need some imposed focus to make me work my weak spots. I'm definitely gonna keep your advice in mind while working some stuff and the comment you made about the birds is interesting since that is Flash-vectorbased and my approach is different than in ps, so I'll experiment with that concept some more. THNX again.

More captain caveman sketches. I still have to work on the club, the cape and the "pull anything out of fur" idea. I tried different styles of Cc but this is still the one that works best.

Don't forget to post ideas in the kweebek section.

Got a contract for an x amount of time, so the doodling is not as frequent for now.
So the guy who holds the life sessions gave me a challenge to go straight in ink...it was damn hard but very rewarding. It made a muscle tingle in me brain. I'm gonna do it more often even if it makes my drawings go OOGY on me.
But I cheated a little....some were ruffed in pencil.

I truly love your charactures. Awesome. expressions are a bitch, and you definitely know what your doing there. great life studies, I need to learn to be more loose like you in your studies, because its the best way to study and let it stick. I have a question, Which "artists anatomy" book did you use, I've been trying to find a good one.

Some Guy- Thnx man, 'preciate you dropping by.

Pickles- Tanks dude! I have two anatomy books, but the one I like the most is "Anatomy for the Artist' by Sarah Simblet ( I believe it's featured somewhat on fineart.sk ) It's a great book with lotsa pictures ( color&Bw ) and onionskin draw overs of bones and muscle. The sketches are rather rough but clear and flowing.

More late nite randomness. I meant to fill up the page more but got sleepy.

Well they have to fit into this project. Later I'll be posting an update on character design and location to give you guys a good idea and get some crits from ya.

THNX Bojee !!! Looking forward to seeing more an' more of your art back on CA :yayca:

Been neglecting my doodles alot but been workin' also, so it evens out. Did some 2Danimation and assisting and a big rush for a Flash animation..... good gigs :teeth:

So to make up for my lack of discipline here at CA, here's mo wip's from a shortfilm I'm making.
The main character design is complete, but I have to match those birds ( remember the previous page ??) to the bee ( butt the focus is on the bee so the bird will be treated differently in the end )

Still noodling around with the design of the flower...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/design_fleur02.jpg

This is where I'm really stuck and I have to get outside help for this....environments !!!! I have lotsa BG's to do and I have trouble figuring a palette that I like and overall design that works. It's a real bitch for me this one. So here are a few tryouts......
crits are a must even though these are very early conceptstuff

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/91011/Design_BG02.jpg

I've done more of these so I'll be posting them soon.
I've tried to get some funding for this project but didn't make it far ( got a measly budget which is still good ). So i've deciced to give the producer role a break and push the artsy stuff more..... will be reverting to producer mode by end of 2005.
