hi all
decided after much deliberation to do a wip of my painting of bfly`s picture of the austin watts crew she kindly let me have....
also it might give me an incentive to kick myself in the butt every now and then to get it done.....lol

this is something new for me so i`m learning so much as i go along...thinned paint for ground, and decided to put another ground in for the guys as i wanted to establish them firmly in the picture before i went any further....they are the focus although it was the picture as a whole, especially the lighting, that attracted me to do the picture in the first place....lots of blocking in to do at the moment, realised the guys should be first so am doing that now, shaping the faces especially important for me....will finish the blocking in of the b/ground after that....
you may see that i made a mistake to start with, the guys are too short.....so, will lengthen them as i go...
some thinned paint around the guys leg gives me the right leg length...i think...and the yellowness of the light needs to be kept in mind as well....
anway, feel free to throw things at me at your leisure....

hi krispee
It's so great to see this here. I'm excited to see what direction you take this photo! These two beginning phases are great. The things you pointed out are probably what I'd make mention of. The length of the figures and the details of the faces comment you made on my photo thread that we already msg'd about. No need on such small details, especially at this stage in the game, but you do want to fix the figure lengths a bit before you get too far along. I think you're right about being able to change them in the just by carviing into them with the shapes around them, and keeping the height the same still. You're still in the blocking in phases, the overall shapes.. which is exactly what you've gone for and done quite well with so far. Great job. Nice to see this. Thank you for showing, and thank you so much for being interested in painting this photo. I look forward to following this. At whatever pace.. oh, and regarding your comment:
um, the austin pic.....well, it`s coming along, put it that way, but nowhere near finished and will be a while to be honest....i have a full time job as well as several other paintings to do as well and my new website to finish off, i know, excuses...
I'm right there with you. Probably a lot of us are, but I can only speak for myself. And I totally understand. I'm trying to re-evaluate my time management to be able to fit in what I love and what I have to do, and what sort of crosses over.. it's tough. Anyway, I look forward to seeing the progression.. at whatever pace..
cheers and good luck.

some of the heads seem bigger than in proportion to their bodies. Try to excentuate more lights in different areas in the backround, its hard to crit this because the backround needs some work on it...

that would be because this is still a WIP....can never get enough time to do too much to it at a time....so a lot of things will need to be 'adjusted' shall we say, heads included....some of the guys in there are different body shapes anyway, so that would change the way they look....and different heights....but will be having a go at the background soon so will post another then....

well, it's coming along nicely!... very cool... You've got their character down - all of em.. it's crazy.
okay, let's see.. are the figures tall enough, you ask?.. they have 'grown' a bit, but some still seem short..mainly the figures on the left side. But this is a tough one because, really, most of those guys are not really very tall... heheh.. The proportions as acheng mentioned do seem a bit off on a few of the figures - head size compared to body size.. mainly on the left side also. Ummm.. other than that, it's WIP.. maybe one crit type comment to keep in mind - don't forget to keep everything unified.. color scheme, darks and lights, remind yourself of the one main focus of the piece, what drew it to you in the first place.. just something to keep reminding yourself as you go.. for what it's worth..
I look forward to seeing the progress.
Nice job, krispee.
Cheers.

form: i guess you(and some others here) might think of them being like caricatures because you may actually know them, or even be one! lol....
bfly: i think i`ll adjust the heads a little as i`m doing the background rather than 'grow' them, that would be easier, the guy in the middle with the lighter top, the second from left, the third from left....all these need adjusting, but some of them need their chins defining a little more, that would help 'size' the faces a bit more.........and the photo i`ve taken is just 'pants'...an english expression lol....no offense to you US citizens..... :D....means horrendous...
the colours look better in the flesh, trust me.....but everything should come together in the end.....he sais looking terrified lol

i personally think i look the coolest in the painting so far, even though i was standing in a puddle(which i really was, austin does not have the cleanest puddles)... when this is completed i will definately have this as my background...

panda and dns2k:
thankyou for your kindness lol.....still lots to do......and thanks for reminding me that i need to get down to it again.....
a friend of mine here that has seen it has commented that he`d like to see one or two of the guys holding skateboards or something.....but i don`t know if that wouldn`t be like sacrilege really......
so guys, the question that burns in my mind here is, which ones are you?
:D
krispee
PS - panda: did try and compare your 3d charicature with my painting but came up with a big fat niete....nada.....couldn`t see ya....good 3d character though, did a bit of that myself once......

You've done a spectacular job of capturing the 5th figure's ugliness. Great work. Actually, ive never seen the photo, but I can recognize a few of the dudes from it. I don't think I've met/seen them all. Anticipating the finish!

Ha ha! Who knew this would be the watts comedy thread.. all this talk is makin me laugh.. hoooo! Anyway, so here's the list of names..
doug, dzu, len, jason, dns2k, panda, maus, ron, michael L..
if (and I say if) someone were to be holding a skateboard, it would be ron, but I do have to correct you dns.. (seeing as how I've know ron since we were wee little folk).. he was into the art thing much before the skate thing, and the art thing always stuck with him through everything else he was into.. and lucky us, huh.. we are blessed with his amazing talent.. as I am blessed by the amount of talent from all of you guys in that photo.. :bashful:
krispee, you've got your hands full with this peanut gallery.. I guess I should've warned you.. heheh.. so anyway, let's see some more!!

oh shoot, i`ll post another shot soon....i`ve noticed a huge mistake i`ve made which can`t be corrected which has really annoyed me....it knocked me for a bit but i`ll get over it.....
don`t worry, i`m leaving the skateboard thingy....and i guess the ron you`re talking about is 'your' ron, vanessa?
anyway....here am i, struggling with my hogs hair.....and the light, where is the light!

hi krispee
what big mistake? have you worked on it since the last pic posted? it's still so much in the beginning phase.. mistakes.. bah!.. and anyway, this is a work in progress thread, remember? post it so you can get feedback..
ehem.. and yes, that's mr. ron lemen - hence the same last name.. but he's known around here in CA.org as fredflickstone.. and I didn't think vanessa flickstone had quite the ring to it.. heheh..
anyway, post more wip. love to see it..

well, have been having a go at the background.....have noticed an error with the size of the guys in the picture as a whole....they`re too big, making the buildings and the tree seem too small in comparison......i can`t do anything about it now but when the picture is finished maybe no-one will notice......i have to sort out some major colour issues with some parts as well, noteably upper right....funny, i only noticed that when i`d taken the photo and was looking at it in photoshop......
http://www.fluidimage.co.uk/images/austinwattscrew_sketchover.jpg
anyway, i have to trip to london now so i`ll leave you guys and gals to judge.......
